Masked men try to prevent women from attending a lawful, public meeting to discuss the impact of proposed changes to the law on women's rights:

Excellent post chatty

Ohmydayslove · 23/04/2018 08:35

That was very disturbing to watch

Onemorning · 23/04/2018 08:56

It's deliberate intimidation.

grandplans · 23/04/2018 08:58

Instead, members of that group of opinion are using tactics taken straight out of fascism, while claiming to be the victims of anyone who questions, let alone those who disagree with their ideas and feelings.

Indeed they are.

It's not only ironic, deeply sinister IMO, that TRAs call anyone who disagrees with them fascist, and they use that as their justification for violence, including against older women. The idea being that because our ideas are "fascist" according to them, we deserve to be punched first.

Tara Wood / Tanis Wolf went looking for "fash" to "fuck up" before he insulted Maria.

I am deeply concerned that this movement is not only seeking to redefine what men and women mean, but also to make the word fascist meaningless.

How will people with little appreciation of history or politics recognise genuine fascism if the word has ceased to have meaning?

Who does this benefit?

WTF is going on here?

To be shocked that this is happening in Britain in 2018?

Sorry I am being climbed on by a child and my words are coming out wrong!

Tara Wood / Tanis Wolf went looking for "fash" to "fuck up" before he ATTACKED Maria.

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 23/04/2018 09:12

sentMai is just pushing for reactions. Vacuous statements designed to illicit a response.

Another situation where MN needs to step up to the mark & introduce the much requested "ignore user" function.

yetanothertranswoman · 23/04/2018 09:56

What's curious about that video and the interaction is that the word 'trans' isn't mentioned at all by any of the protesters on the stairs.

No shouting, no statements.

I didn't watch it all ... but what are you suggesting? That it was more of an excuse to call women cunts than it was to advocate for trans people?

CadyHeron · 23/04/2018 10:04

Now, as much as I agree with everything that's being said here (that video is chilling, who the hell do they think they are?!)
I really wouldn't like an ignore user function on here. Isn't that exactly the same as what it's like on Twitter - kind of like a "block anyone who doesn't agree with me so I don't have to see them?"
That's one of the things I love about here. You get to be outside of an echo chamber and you get to see ALL viewpoints even if you don't agree with them.

yetanothertranswoman · 23/04/2018 10:05

hat it was more of an excuse to call women cunts than it was to advocate for trans people

I don't think the people on the stairs cared at all about trans people - they weren't chanting any slogans, they weren't saying why there were there - except to stop people attending the meeting, there was no discussion by anyone on the stairs about the meeting.

If someone was to watch the video without any other information, I am not sure if they would know what was going on - they wouldn't know why the people on the stairs were blocking them.

Based on my experience of protests and activism, you normally have a good idea why the activists are there. They normally are quite vocal and passionate about their cause.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 23/04/2018 10:08

Don't worry - it's May Day and the bank holiday coming up, so a different excuse to rampage around being aggressive and violent.

Juells · 23/04/2018 10:09

If someone, or a group of someones, doesn't allow you to leave is that not false imprisonment? A false imprisonment case rumbled on for months and months in the Irish courts, and the circumstances weren't much different from what happened here.

There is a large number of male TRAs that I think that more generally of - including those who call themselves trans, non-binary and gender diverse. I think they are in it because it gives them an excuse to be misogynistic, to cast themselves or others as victims and to rough up women without censure (because they deserve it).

In any other context, a male acting as aggressively to JB in the video would be immediately called out for his behaviour - but not if it's 'all to protect trans'.

IfNot · 23/04/2018 10:22

I would NOT like an "ignore user" button!
We need free speech! I want less of this "I'm too fragile to hear something I don't like" mentality.
Blocking people who threaten others (e.g people threatening women with rape) or use nasty insults (like Cunt), fine, remove them them for not behaving civilly, but you can't block people you just don't agree with!

100% agree with you, glad it's not just me! I WANT to hear views from everyone. Not just ignore those I don't agree with -- isn't that exactly what they do?! Just from the "other side."
Block the insults and threats by all means, but you can't just block or ignore someone for having a different opinion.
Hate how some people can't take opinions that don't tally with their own and automatically screech "mean! or troll!" (not aimed at anyone on here, just in general)

WrongOnTheInternet · 23/04/2018 11:21

Police men are men like any others. They are not our friends or allies. They are there to keep the civil peace, not ensure moral justice.

I do not live in London, am not about to travel down there, so I can say this from my comfy armchair... might women in groups faced with intimidating groups try making them back down verbally? Describe the situation - I am trying to go to a lawful meeting and you are all standing here deliberately stopping me, looking threatening, why do you think you have the right to do this, can you see what you look like? You are scaring me in those masks and it looks as if you are trying to threaten me. Are you the police, what right do you have to do this, etc, etc? I am going to continue on up the stairs pursuing my own life in peace, if you try to stop me then it is you that is in the wrong, you breaking the law, not me. And then do exactly that.

Instead of just getting over-excited and screaming about violence, which as BertrandRussell says did not actually happen at this time. That's just playing their game, their way.

Juells · 23/04/2018 11:26

@WrongOnTheInternet

But...that's exactly what they did.

Why talk about 'screaming about violence'? Next comes the 'hysterical women' accusation.

WrongOnTheInternet · 23/04/2018 11:29

I have to admit I didn't get all the video cos I don't do facebook and so it wouldn't let me see all of it...

Ereshkigal · 23/04/2018 11:32

They did say those things.

WrongOnTheInternet · 23/04/2018 11:37

Britain begins to look like a lawless wild west.

There was no apparent discussion on the video about the actual meeting or why they were going to the meeting and the protesters didn't say why they were stopping them going to the meeting.

There were 2 police cars outside.

The last time I was involved in any activism (which was not trans related in case people were wondering), the police were most definitely there to prevent a breach of the peace, we were definitely explaining what we doing and our concerns and the police told us in no uncertain terms to stop what we were doing or we would be arrested for a breach of the peace.

So this particular protest - with 2 police cars outside, the police doing nothing, a well known journalist and commentator being blocked from going upstairs, the protestors and the people trying to get in not even talking about the issue of the meeting all seems a bit strange.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/04/2018 12:03

It really does, doesn't it? The whole not taking sides thing is absurd because people are allowed to have meetings in the UK, so if other people are blocking their access to such a meeting then what side is there to take? You tell the people blocking access to move along. That is what the police are for. It's not their job to weigh up the two sides and decide which is correct on a given issue.

BertrandRussell · 23/04/2018 12:07

Do we know why the police weren’t involved?

AngryAttackKittens · 23/04/2018 12:08

Apparently they told someone at the site that they didn't want to take sides. Which if true is ridiculous. What the meeting is about should have no bearing on whether or not it's allowed to happen.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 23/04/2018 12:12

I agree that the police are not supposed to take sides

They are supposed to uphold the law and keep the peace

I would be interested in the real reason they didnt bother doing anything
