To ask what/who the dole should be for?

Just been having this discussion with my brothers and Dad and we obviously disagree totally! By dole I mean any government help excludind child benefit.
So I’m interested to know who you think it should be for and why?

right OK so, you think that tax credits and HB is 'the dole'?

Personally i would love to be able to work and pay my way but successive governments have made that impossible, with inflated rents and non-rising wages.

I always though the dole was just JSA (or historical equivalents). So my answer there would be people who are currently unemployed. It seems quite straightforward that you claim ‘the dole’ when you don’t have a job.

Other benefits exist for other situations in which people are unable to work or are not paid sufficiently.

"The dole" traditionally is just unemployment benefit, whereas the welfare state is for anyone in need due to illness etc to.

Those who are incapacitated (due to old age/disability) or, short term out if work and actively looking for work and have no means of supporting themselves (no savings, no assets including equity in a property).

Sadly we are unable to work because my DH has cancer, and the world's worst treatment, and I am his carer (I get a whole £250 a month and that's all). Are we deserving enough for you?

Erm.. The dole is unemployment benefit.

And why are you not including child benefit on your list?

I thought 'dole money' was just jsa so anyone who has lost their job. It tides them over until they get their 1st pay packet.

Well, except CB. Presumably because the OP claims it.

I guess it follows the logic of the government rolling all benefits together and calling it UC though. They want us to think of all benefits as exactly the same, and to think poorly of those who claim them.

I hadn’t included child benefit as you have to be earning over a fair amount to not receive it.

so that is tax credits, WFTC, CTC , HB, sick pay, incapacity benefit, war widows pension, old age pension....shall i go on?

Are you not including child benefit because you’re in receipt of it yourself and don’t want to include yourself as being on the dole?

Anyway, your definition of dole is wrong. Dole is unemployment benefit/JSA.

However my family and I disagree on what that should entail.

That’s just it isn’t it though,
Somehow people now see WTC and CTC as a benifit, someone who gets something for nothing because there too lazy when actually, most of them work full time.

I’m not sure how it was managed but the government have successfully brainwashed a lot of people to see this as a ‘hand out’ as apposed to a way that subsidises business owners! 🤬

So is the disagreement about how long you think someone should be able to claim job seekers for ?

I always thought the dole was any benefit. But also think benefits are there for anyone that needs them, whether that be someone unemployed or a full time working family in lower paid jobs that just need a top up to afford rent.
I also think universal credit is crap, I’m entitled to nothing with partner full time on national living wage, and me working just above NLW 3 days a week.
God knows what we’re supposed to do if say the washing machine broke, luckily my father is a high earner so I’ll never actually have financial difficulties as he’s more than generous within reason, but I’d be fucked if I didn’t have that security.
Don’t think there should be any stigma.

I think you and your family probably some up the adage ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing’ on this discussion as you don’t actually appear to be in the slightest informed about it.
