To want the coins first, then the notes

Suspect I'm pissing in the wind as this has gone on all of my life and doesn't look set to change any time soon.

Cashiers, till operators, retail staff. When I'm piled with bags and have my purse in one hand and have the other hand willing, nay eager to accept coins and notes in change - why do you put the note on my palm first and then pile coins on top? This makes it IMPOSSIBLE to tip the coins effectively, especially with a queue champing at the bit behind you.

Please. Coins in palm, notes offered to grasping fingers so it/they can be stowed first. I thengyou.

YANBU. This drives me crazy.

PollyEthel · 10/04/2018 22:56

YES!!!!!
That is all.

youngestisapsycho · 10/04/2018 22:57

It’s not really that hard... the coins slide off the note into the purse.

MrsHathaway · 10/04/2018 22:58

YANBU

You can tell when a shop has trained its staff well because they do coins then notes, or put them sort of next to each other so you can manage them.

When the assistant is very young I have been known to ask for coins first and explain why. You can see the lightbulb!

Caspiana · 10/04/2018 22:58

Even more annoying if they put the receipt under the note

IWantMyHatBack · 10/04/2018 23:00

I used to be a cashier. I made a point of coins first.

If someone puts money in my hand with notes first I have to put it all down on the till and slowly put it back into my wallet.

StrawberrySquash · 10/04/2018 23:02

Somebody once told me it was to stop you hiding the note somehow and them claiming you'd been short changed, but I don't really see it. It drives me mad and I always made sure not to do it when I was a shop assistant.

BloodyBosch · 10/04/2018 23:02

I assume it is done that way so that you can see that you have the correct change, before tipping it in to your purse?

mummyof2boys30 · 10/04/2018 23:03

i also work in a shop and i do coins first :)

BackforGood · 10/04/2018 23:03

Yes.
It is just so obvious. I can't understand why they do it WRONGLY so much of the time.

Hidingtonothing · 10/04/2018 23:04

My pet hate, I'm with you OP.

blackteasplease · 10/04/2018 23:05

yanbu! I've always hated having the coins put on top of the notes.

I tend to hold.my hand so that the coins.cant be put on my.palm until.I've taken the note with my fingers.

Dljlr · 10/04/2018 23:05

YANBU, this also drives me nuts. It's simply fucking common sense. I had a Saturday job in a bakers for 11 years and I always, always did this; coins in hand and note to the fingers. My colleagues didn't, and the number of times customers dropped coins all over the cold counter, which would then roll off and into/onto the cakes below... Gah!

DressingGown · 10/04/2018 23:07

YANBU!!!

TwitterQueen1 · 10/04/2018 23:08

In the good old olden days we used to actually count the change into the customers' hands, out loud, so you would ALWAYS obviously give the coins first, then the notes.

It drives me bananas too - it's just impossible to get everything back into your purse otherwise!

TeresasGreen · 10/04/2018 23:09

Yanbu! I thought it was just me.

toffee1000 · 10/04/2018 23:09

I really don’t give a fuck either way. I hate the smell of coins when I’ve been holding them for ages, so I instinctively prefer notes first.
I had no idea people were so vindictive about it.

LemonRedwood · 10/04/2018 23:09

It’s not really that hard... the coins slide off the note into the purse.

No they fecking don't.

HildaZelda · 10/04/2018 23:10

The guy who served me in Aldi today really peed me off. I handed him the money for my shopping and he left the change back on the counter. I just think that's SO rude! Angry

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/04/2018 23:11

Yes you're absolutely right. I have never actually registered that this bugs the hell out of me until seeing this thread.

Prestonsflowers · 10/04/2018 23:12

Yanbu, I thought it was only me too.
Drives me crazy, so illogical

counterpoint · 10/04/2018 23:13

Easy. Pay with a card.

SaltireSaltire · 10/04/2018 23:14

I totally agree, annoys me all the time

Sorka · 10/04/2018 23:21

Yanbu. It’s careless and incredibly annoying

Firesuit · 10/04/2018 23:23

YABU. It's 2018, not 1918, you should be paying with a contactless card. Smile
