Are you sure? It's unusual to have a workplace full of bigots. What exactly are they doing that you find bigoted?

Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 10:34

not full just quite a few, a new estate being built included some social housing, upset one colleague.
free university education for those from Wales and Scotland upset another

OP posts:
TERFragetteCity · 25/03/2018 10:36

Why would being upset about free university education in Wales and Scotland be bigoted?

Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 10:37

just so hateful about money

OP posts:
DairyisClosed · 25/03/2018 11:04

That's not bigoted it's economically educated. St no point have they expressed intolerance. You have though. Congratulations.

TittyGolightly · 25/03/2018 11:08

University isn’t free in Wales. Hmm

MeadowHay · 25/03/2018 11:11

The social housing thing clearly is bigoted and classist, and how is being anti-free tuition fees being "economically educated"?! Don't make me laugh! That's not being bigoted but I'm giggling at the idea that the current tuition fee system in England is somehow beyond reproach given all the recent headlines about how even the Tories are considering reforms as so little of it is being paid back the system is costing us tons of money as it is.

MeadowHay · 25/03/2018 11:14

Anyway at work I just tend not to engage if I can't be bothered or just say something light like "Well, I think it's nice that people who are in need of homes will have one in these new development"/"I think it's nice that young people aren't saddled with loads of debt when they go to university to learn skills that then benefit wider society" etc. Idk about your workplace but in mine if I say something light like that people don't challenge it and generally feel awkward and change the subject.

Scabetty · 25/03/2018 11:18

Other opinions are ok. I get wound up with transgender stuff and my colleague says it doesn’t affect me so we argue Grin We still like each other thiugh.

Lichtie · 25/03/2018 11:18

If having opinions on things is bigoted you are on the wrong site 😉

Biker47 · 25/03/2018 11:20

Neither examples are bigoted.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2018 11:22

They sound bigoted against people who are low income working class

"Economically educated" sounds a fancy way of saying NIMBY or "I'm all right, Jill"

DairyisClosed · 25/03/2018 11:23

@meadow unless her coworker said something along the lines of social housing people are smelly there is no bigotry. There are plenty of non bigoted reasons to be upset like a negative impact on her house value or (if this was an expensive area) the thought that two or three times as much housing could have been built on a different site so that fewer people would be facing homelessness if better choices gad been made. As for free for access university why? It costs a lot of money and derives no benefit.governmebt loans mean that no one is unable to attend university due to financial constraints and that they do actually payback the money that the tax payer has spent on them when they can afford it. There are many good reasons not to have free university not least of all because there is no such thing as free. At any rate having an opinion one way or another is not bigited. Being bigoted is what the op has done. They have slandered coworkers for expressing economical (non-bigoted) political views. Bigots are people who are intolerant not people who don't tow the faux Liberal line.

Nightshiftmad · 25/03/2018 11:23

I work nights in a hotel and I don't know the personal views of anyone I work with I don't know that they know any of my views either. I normally steer clear of any personal discussion it is easy to say something offensive to someone without even realising it. I remember at college I said something that someone thought was offensive and I don't think they ever forgot so now I don't say much at work. Not that now I would be that bothered what people thought of me.

Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 11:24

indeed, they are anti low income
but yes Meadow - good plan

also judgmental about lifestyles - i guess we are but it rankles me - my problem I guess

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 11:25

oh - I am bigotted against them? thought someone would say that

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 11:26

it is the ignorance and prejudice that upsets me

OP posts:
PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 25/03/2018 11:27

Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 11:28

Babdoc · 25/03/2018 11:28

It’s perfectly reasonable to be angry about taxpayers’ money in Scotland being used to provide free university tuition to students from the EU, while charging full fees to English students in Scotland.

Buster72 · 25/03/2018 11:28

They have expressed opinions about current economic affairs. No bigotry at all.
You though seem intolerant of people who hold a valid opinion that differs from yours.

InsomniacAnonymous · 25/03/2018 11:28

You said one colleague was upset about "a new estate being built included some social housing". You're hardly surrounded by bigots are you? As for the university fees thing, I can't see what's bigotted about that. It's called a difference of opinion. You ask how to 'cope'? Good grief. Maybe try to accept that different people have different opinions about various things.

Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 11:29

so isnt university free for welsh people then?

OP posts:
TittyGolightly · 25/03/2018 11:29

No! Tuition fees haven’t been as high as in England, but no, definitely not free.

ALittleAubergine · 25/03/2018 11:29

We're all bigoted in someone's eyes.
