I was going to post a similar topic as am dreading work tomorrow. Conversations such as “university is a complete wast of time and money as you’ll only make money by really loving what you do”. Oh and mustn’t forget the topic “people that don’t pay the full amount into their pensions are stupid because the employer then pays more in and it’s free money so why wouldn’t you”.

I no longer engage. In fact the thought of tomorrow morning makes me want to cry.

Oh lemons 😔, ignore

I disagree with majority here. People are welcome to opinions but people should know their audience. complaining about social housing because you don't want riff rag living near you when one of your audience members is a social housing occupant is RUDE.

You could have opinions on say, immigration , without being racist but you don't start saying how you wish we had less immigrants because ... when it's possible / likely that someone in your office is one.

I have this kind of thing happen in work a lot. I hate it. I sometimes want to correct them when they say something factually incorrect but I worry I make myself look like an argumentative twat (and i would be if I challenged everything they said that was outright offensive) it only escalates so I keep quiet most of the time but it's hard.

Slartybartfast · 25/03/2018 15:49

oh yes, immigration, that is a big one, and brexit - eek. a no go

Oranges... I disagree. It depends how you are saying it and what the context is, which the OP hasn't said. If you have justified reasons for having an opinion why shouldn't you say it in front of those people. Is it not more rude to talk behind their back?

orangesandlemonssing · 25/03/2018 17:25

Litchie It's hard to define justified though isn't it? You could be frustrated that your house price has decreased because they are building social housing next door, or be worried because you used to live next door to social housing and had awful neighbours . But saying you don't want them to build social housing next to you because social housing tenants are rough is rude to say when a social housing tenant is sat two seats away.

If my friend has opinions I don't like I can choose to remove myself from the conversation but I can't leave work and I chose my conversation topics with politeness in mind. It would be rude for example, to start saying how I think god is some people's invisible friend with one colleague when I know the person sat on my otherside is a Christian.

Lichtie · 25/03/2018 20:44

Why is it rude to say that you think God doesn't exist... Clearly they have told you they believe he does if they have made it known to you that they are a Christian. Why should they be offended by your quite rational point of view... But like I said, it depends how you say it and context. If they are comfy enough to say they are a Christian that believes in God is that not rude if you are not?

orangesandlemonssing · 25/03/2018 21:00

Yes I think we are agreeing with each other really! Me saying I am atheist =fine. Me saying "I think believing in god in the modern day is bonkers and akin to having an invisible friend as a child" = rude. Both true one rude! I do get carried away in debates though so I guess I am just conscious to keep my mouth shut to avoid accidentally straying from fine to rude !

orangesandlemonssing · 25/03/2018 21:01

I also got the impression from ops post the colleagues were firmly in rude /insensitive category.

orangesandlemonssing · 25/03/2018 21:02

And the Christian was very rude to me about it once, she said I was soulless for being an atheist! This is why I don't engage!

Lichtie · 25/03/2018 21:14

Oranges... Exactly, we are definitely in agreement, it comes down to how you say it.
I got that OP was a little bit sensitive and OTT in calling people bigots for having views that are not uncommon.

Lichtie · 25/03/2018 21:15

Ps... You should have just agreed with her and said souls don't exist either😂

epicclusterfuck · 25/03/2018 21:33

It’s perfectly reasonable to be angry about taxpayers’ money in Scotland being used to provide free university tuition to students from the EU, while charging full fees to English students in Scotland.

Why?

Money comes from UK government to devolved Scottish Government and it is Scottish Government who decides how to spend it, they chose to keep tuition free for Scottish students. So it depends who you voted for!
