To hack off the stalk of the broccoli

Kangar00 · 18/03/2018 14:57

Not an AIBU but was he being unreasonable. I've just seen a man take a knife into Waitrose and hack off the stalk of the broccoli, presumedly because he doesn't eat this bit so doesn't want to pay for it when it is weighed....

So often been tempted...

Idontdowindows · 18/03/2018 14:59

I don't think he was being unreasonable. I mostly buy my brocoli at the market cause the stalks are shorter.

BlankTimes · 18/03/2018 15:02

Isn't it illegal to carry a knife though, how big was it?

Crispbutty · 18/03/2018 15:03

I just break the florets off. Why pay for something I don’t need.

bricksareheavy · 18/03/2018 15:05

Nooooo, the stalk is delicious and full of nutrients! He’s missing out big time 🥦

lizzlebizzle33 · 18/03/2018 15:05

Ridiculously over thought to actually take a knife with him but I agree in snapping it off, I usually buy the pre packed though so don't weigh it.

lljkk · 18/03/2018 15:09

The sale price is calculated assuming stalk on... the stalk keeps it fresher until use, btw.

If you hack a bit off & don't pay for it, you are effectively stealing by not paying for that bit. Broccoli is not so expensive that many people NEED to do this. Angry

MrsEricBana · 18/03/2018 15:14

This is v common.

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 18/03/2018 15:14

I saw a woman do this yesterday in Morrisons. Her husband picked up a pre packed head(59p) she said it's cheaper to buy it loose and proceeded to spend about 5 minutes trying to twist a bit of stalk off. Must have saved her all of 5p. If everyone did this the supermarkets would have to put the prices up as they have effectively paid for the complete head and would lose loads of money.
I would be worried that someone was carrying a knife though.

BahHumbygge · 18/03/2018 15:18

Nooo! The stalk is the best bit to use in soups & stirfries.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 18/03/2018 15:20

The stalk, peeled, is the nicest bit

sparklyllama · 18/03/2018 15:20

bicksareheavy I agree, seriously, why not eat it. Confused

Clevs · 18/03/2018 15:20

I sometimes snap the stalk off if it's particularly big. It only gets thrown away so I don't want to pay for something that I'm not going to use. I wouldn't go to the extreme of taking a knife shopping with me though Hmm

piglet81 · 18/03/2018 15:22

I love the stalk!

LadySainsburySeal · 18/03/2018 15:32

The stalk, as others have said, is perfectly edible. Such a waste of good food otherwise.

Kangar00 · 18/03/2018 16:00

Penknife type thing

OP posts:
Oblomov18 · 18/03/2018 16:06

I have snapped it off once or twice, when it was very big.

nokidshere · 18/03/2018 16:10

The stalk has the most flavour

Idontdowindows · 18/03/2018 16:17

I agree, seriously, why not eat it

Because the texture is different and no one in this house likes the texture of stalk. So I buy brocoli with as short a stalk as possible.

EyepatchOfTravis · 18/03/2018 16:18

Nooo! That's the best bit!! I love the stalk bit raw and peeled! It's a treat for myself to snack on while I'm cooking! (DP always saves that bit for me when he's cooking too Grin)

Redpriestandmozart · 18/03/2018 16:21

The stalk is the best part, sweeter and full of flavour, perfect served with the florets, I'd miss the stalk!

On the other hand I have been tempted to remove all the packaging after paying and just dumping it on the checkout!

foxessocks · 18/03/2018 16:25

red campaigners for reducing plastic advise removing packaging at the checkouts and leave it so it becomes a problem for the supermarket rather than a problem for you to dispose of at home

Sorry derail there but I haven't ever heard of people taking the stalks off broccoli!

legofansmum · 18/03/2018 16:28

I always snap the stalk off broccoli in supermarkets. We don't eat the really long part so money wasted if I don't.
Wouldn't go as far as taking a knife mindConfused.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 18/03/2018 16:31

HWNBU.

Rylanmakesmyheartsmile · 18/03/2018 16:32

I remember as a child going shopping with my mum and next to the broccoli was a little mini saw on a string for this very purpose. I've wondered about it often and when it stopped. She did her shopping in Stewart's or Wellworths as they were then in NI - no idea if this happened in other parts of the UK, but it was totally normal to me growing up
