To hack off the stalk of the broccoli

Not an AIBU but was he being unreasonable. I've just seen a man take a knife into Waitrose and hack off the stalk of the broccoli, presumedly because he doesn't eat this bit so doesn't want to pay for it when it is weighed....

Those who eat the stalk, how do you cook and serve it? I nibble at it raw but would rather add it to meals for the family. Have added it to soup but nothing else.

supersop60 · 18/03/2018 16:35

The stalk is my favourite bit!

Celticrose · 18/03/2018 16:37

Maybe we just go the whole hog. Remove onion skins and roots, mushroom stalks in my case (DH does not like them) the green leaves on the cauliflower. The outer leaves on cabbage etc

Oldraver · 18/03/2018 16:38

I love the stalk and this is my favourite bit..but I have seen people doing this.

I once went to Asda to buy DS some pants and got frustrated at all the open packets with mixed sizes in them. I asked an assistant if they had anymore and she told me people will come in and swap over sizes so they buy one packet for two kids.

Sals27 · 18/03/2018 16:39

I honestly did not know you could eat the stalk. Is it served sliced and how do you cook it? Definitely up for trying it, what a waste!

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/03/2018 16:40

My mum does this. I bought a head of broccoli for 45p today. I feed the stalk to the pony.

cjferg · 18/03/2018 16:43

Yea I save the stalk and put it in soup. Little cubes of broccoli-y goodness!

chemenger · 18/03/2018 16:51

I always peel it and eat it raw, it's delicious. Also good in soup. I did once have boiled broccoli stalks served as a vegetable in the US. We were baffled by what they were and had to ask. I believe the function in another part of the hotel got the florets.

Next time I buy peas in the pod I will shell them in the shop and just pay for the bit I want, maybe...or maybe not. There is a reason the ready prepared florets with the stalk removed are more expensive, I can't believe people would be so petty as to remove the stalks. Like so many other things this will just lead to everybody paying more.

Redpriestandmozart · 18/03/2018 17:20

Just about to have some with dinner, apart from the dirty end I don't peel it, just slice and steam with the rest of the head.

Thanks for that, least I won't look like a crazy woman!

To hack off the stalk of the broccoli
Eliza9917 · 18/03/2018 17:27

This has never occurred to me. Though I will probably do the same in future as we don't eat the stalk.

ArcheryAnnie · 18/03/2018 17:29

I would actively buy broccoli stalks without the florets, if they were available. I don't really like the florets, but I love the stalks.

I think we need to have some sort of Jack Spratt/Mrs Sprat matching service, but for broccoli...

HOWEVER it's a bit cheeky buggering about with the produce in the shop. All of you who snap the stalks off, do you also peel bananas and pod peas right there in the shop, to stop you paying by weight for stuff you don't eat?

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 18/03/2018 17:31

We should eat the stalk really. The food we eat is very restricted so good to get more types of plant food in

I would think anyone removing part of a vegetable they don’t want to save pennies is a supreme tight arse, probably the type who leaves the pub when it’s their round

VladmirsPoutine · 18/03/2018 17:32

I can't believe people do this. The shame. And how much is broccoli anyway?

NutElla5x · 18/03/2018 17:33

I peel it and boil/steam it with the florets,it's my favourite bit.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/03/2018 17:34

Not so much that you'd need to bring a knife and cut off what would essentially amount to like 4pence more if that.

FlouncyDoves · 18/03/2018 17:37

I snap the top bits off too.

I also open pre-packed broccoli and mushrooms etc if there aren’t any un-prepackaged (?) ones available.

Cooroo · 18/03/2018 17:40

Seriously do people snap it off in the shop?? I have never seen this.

I eat the stalk. I cut off the hard outside and eat the middle raw. It is yummy.

itstimeforanamechange · 18/03/2018 17:45

So please send your stalks to me :)

starzig · 18/03/2018 18:03

Weird. It's like peeling all the bananas before you go to the till

DollyMcDolly · 18/03/2018 18:06

I’d be so embarrassed to do that. It must only save pennies

UterusUterusGhali · 18/03/2018 18:09

One of my sons only likes the florets and one the stalk which is great!

I cut the stalk into julienne kinda sticks and boil or steam. They don't take long.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 18/03/2018 18:14

What a waste!

noraclavicle · 18/03/2018 18:24

I read a recipe the other day for the stalks - peel, slice into medallions (not too thin, about 1/8 of an inch) then fry in a little oil on both sides until they’re nicely browned. Dead easy and supposed to be delicious!
