To hack off the stalk of the broccoli

Not an AIBU but was he being unreasonable. I've just seen a man take a knife into Waitrose and hack off the stalk of the broccoli, presumedly because he doesn't eat this bit so doesn't want to pay for it when it is weighed....

I julienne them, then stir fry with sesame oil, soy sauce and Nitin, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Lovely hot or cold.

Mirin, not Nitin!

When I lived abroad the supermarket I used provided a little saw for people to remove the stalks, and then gave the leftovers away (there was a little basket to the side for holding the stalks and people could help themselves)

The butchers also had a sign up inviting people to take bones for dogs and the bakery counter gave away fresh yeast. This was in the mid noughties, so not years and years ago.

I can't get too worked up over it

I slice and steam it with the florets. If I don't use it for any reason it goes in my "veg to be used when making stock' tub in the freezer until I make stock. This also has carrot peelings, ends of herbs, bits of celery, cabbage leaves, anything really. And I boil up chicken carcasses for the stock and throw the saved veg in with them.

I turn the stalk and the cabbage leaves into soup

The supermarket changing to packed did not remove the food waste, it just moved it out of the supermarket to the home, people who didn't want it didn't start eating it just because you made them take it home.
Might as well leave it at the supermarket for those of us who do like it to pick up free

So glad so many people don't the stalk. I never realised how good it was until my OH started using it in cooking all the time. Really is the best bit!
