To wonder why the name needs to be said....

A number of friends have children that go the Pre School or nursery and those are the terms they use.
However one friend has a child that goes to a Montessori nursery and she always says " just dropped ( blank) at Montessori" whereas the rest will say something like " just dropped ( blank ) at nursery " etc.
Is this usual or is it a subtle boast that they consider it superior.

My child went to a Montessori nursery and I don’t think I would have referred to it that way unless talking to a other parent whose child went there (as Montessori was part of the nursery name).

Montessori nurseries can be seen as a bit of a status thing in some places (naice London boroughs) so perhaps there is some snobbery there? Depends on what your friend is like talking about other potentially posh things.

My child went there because it was term time only and because I like Montessori early education. It wasn’t the most aspirational nursery in the area but there were some cliquey mums in Breton tops etc. No idea how many of them were also at the other nurseries.

DS goes to the Montessori Nursery and I do refer to it as the Montessori. I think it’s a kind of “ooh we believe in Montessori, chat to me about it!” prompt (DS will be going to a Montessori school, we’re v committed to the approach) rather than being snobby or trying to show off. But I can see how it’s annoying and will endeavour to stop :)

That’s my experience too OP, everyone I know who used a Montessori called it that. It always felt weird, like people who say ‘I’m just parking the BMW’. Terwats.

ANd yes thinking about it I have friends who take their children to “the Steiner” or “forest school”, rather than just saying Nursery. I think it’s more an announcement of values or ideas rather than pure snobby ness if that helps.

Where I live, all preschools are Montessori, so you're considered very up your own arse pretentious to call it nursery!

My daughter went to a Montessori-style Pre school recently and her behaviour has never been so bad since she started there! 😱

Whether that was down to the Nursery staff, the kids there or the Montessori approach is anyone's guess but since she changed, her behaviour has improved dramatically!

Sounds a bit wanky.

I know someone who does this, except it’s the area that her daughter and grandchildren live in. So if you speak to her, she’ll say something like “Well Maisie is at {Area name} Primary School - meaningful pause - until 3:30 so she’ll come over later”.

The thing is, although {Area} was a bit smarter twenty or thirty years ago, it isn’t any more (but is still perfectly nice). So people who are new to the area just look blank when she does the meaningful pause.

The sounds like the equivalent of "at Oxbridge." Never "at university." Always "when I was at Oxford" or "when I was at Cambridge."

My children went to a Montessori nursery. We chose it because it was literally across the road from our home at the time (and lovely) but I dpon't think they were really very purist with the Montessori ethos. I think we just called it the nursery or by it's name (but not with the Montessori bit as that would have been a bit of a mouthful). The staff and families weren't very representative of our area which was pretty white working class where the nursery was almost completely black middle class for some reason.

My sister does it with her car. She always calls it “The Merc” never the car.

Funnily enough she used to drive a Citroen Picasso and she always used to call that “The Car”.

There's a Montessori nursery near me and I avoided like the plague with my children.

I do spell out places in a very fastidious way for the asd dc. And I think I do this when talking to others too. Dc has taught me to be precise..

DH worked with someone, who used to say "I drove the Porsche to Brighton" rather than "I went to Brighton" or even "I drove to Brighton".

I also worked with someone, who said that he was working to support the Porsche. What is it about Porsches?

I know someone who refers to their own home as Cottage. As in, "had a lovely weekend at Cottage." "End of a long day, it's so good to put my feet up at Cottage." "We had all the family round at Cottage for mum's birthday." Bloody pretentious. It's not even a cottage, it is an average 1960s semi on a main road.

My niece goes to a Montessori and they call it school. Apparently it’s not a nursery (even though DN is 2!).

It's a trendy and wanky label. On T-shirts, coats and bags you can have the wanky label visible to everybody, but with a nursery you have to go out your way to let everybody know.
