A number of friends have children that go the Pre School or nursery and those are the terms they use.
However one friend has a child that goes to a Montessori nursery and she always says " just dropped ( blank) at Montessori" whereas the rest will say something like " just dropped ( blank ) at nursery " etc.
Is this usual or is it a subtle boast that they consider it superior.
Drives me mad !

we say forest school because it explains why we are taking kid to nursery all wrapped up in 97 layers until he looks entirely spherical.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 13/03/2018 21:58

We had a Montessori pre school and primary on our city.

It was closed down instantly by the School inspectors and the city council had to reopen a mothballed School the next morning to take their children until an alternative could be found.

“Montessorri” is boast in our city

Notso · 13/03/2018 22:15

I know someone who manages to shoehorn her children's school being a 'selective grammar' and the fact her husband is a company director into virtually every conversation.
The selective grammar (you can hear the italics in her voice) is especially annoying as aren't all grammars selective, isn't that the point?
I've seen pisters do it on here in threads about schools there's always "DD's school (indie) does ..." "My DS goes to a Grammar..." "DS1's outstanding primary do..." even though that extra bit of information adds nothing to the comment.
It's all a bit Hyacinth Bucket "my sister Violet, swimming pool and room for a pony"

it sounds annoying, here the local Montessori are just called "school" by the parents

Namechangefailagain · 14/03/2018 09:27

Never even heard of a Montessori nursery Blush where I live we have pre school, nursery or play school.

BigFatGoalie · 14/03/2018 09:55

Being a teacher, when I hear a child is coming to me that’s been to a Montessori school I cringe!!!!
So much work I have to do to get them up to the level we expect.
So it may be a “status” thing for some parents, but don’t be so sure it isn’t that your status is going downwards!

Loyaultemelie · 14/03/2018 11:59

I know what a Montessori is, I live in NI, although my dd is going to be going to nursery soon but however I'm utterly baffled as to what forest school is? Sorry realise this is not the point of the thread but just curious?

keepKalm · 14/03/2018 12:11

Lol, just wait until the kids go to University. If the Mumsnet threads are anything to go by some gushing parents will do ANYTHING to let you know that their kids go to Oxford or Cambridge and or that their kids are A* kids. It’s painful.

I got about halfway down the first page and had the crashing realisation I do this but a) not over schools and b) not over prestige cars. I'll say "the Mondeo" for example to differentiate from "the BMW", I do say "the iPhone" but it's to differentiate from "my phone" and "my big phone" (all my phones), I never thought about it before but I guess to people not in my home it sounds wankery. Hmm food for thought.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 14/03/2018 13:09

Why do you need to differentiate between your big phone and your little phone, Annie? Who actually cares which phone you're talking about?

KERALA1 · 14/03/2018 13:12

No need to criticise op gives the rest of us something to laugh at Grin.

Utterly agree about the word "indie" just...no!

KERALA1 · 14/03/2018 13:15

Reminds me of David baddiel sketch - if he fell into the canal his mother would shout " help! My son, the Cambridge graduate, has fallen into the canal" Grin

Yokohamajojo · 14/03/2018 13:43

Where I live, people don't live in XX no they live in YY borders just to try and communicate that they are living very close to the naicer neighbourhood! cringe

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 13:45

They're just using the accurate name. What's it to you?

MotherOfWurzel · 14/03/2018 13:57

I kind of love people who do this. It makes me feel like i live in a sitcom.

Anyone watching Mum on BBC2? If you aren't, you should. It's great. The sister in law does exactly this.

Loyaultemelie · 14/03/2018 23:09

Thank you IvyMaud!

No way !!! I refuse to believe that grown adults speak like this!!!

AhCheeses · 17/03/2018 22:43

A friend of mine used to talk about taking her child to 'Children of the World', a Montessori school in town.
Every single time she said 'Children of the World' I had to stop myself from shouting out 'spice up your life!' 😏

KittenBeast · 17/03/2018 22:47

Am I the only one who doesn't know wtf a Montessori nursery is? off to google I go...

Nocabbageinmyeye · 17/03/2018 22:57

Dd goes to Montessori, it's just the name of the room she's in though, like it's the local creche but the rooms are named, like toddlers, pre school, then montessori then you leave and go to local primary. It was only till I joined mn and I saw a mention of there being a difference (?) to nursery, we're not in the UK though so there is no difference here, not that I am aware of and pretty sure the creche isn't aware of it either, definitely nothing wanky about our local creche

Laquila · 17/03/2018 22:59

AhCheeses 😂😂😂 brilliant

I know what you mean OP but I do think there’s different motivations behind this for different people.

I don’t think think there’s a Montessori nursery within 20 miles of where I live bit we do have nurseries, preschools, nursery classes (in schools), playgroups, forest schools, first schools, primaries...it does get a bit confusing so I can sort of see why people want to be a bit more specific, but also can see how some people do just want to be a bit wanky 😂

As an aside, in a big city about 30 miles away, preschool doesn’t really seem to be a thing. They have “playgroup”, which is what I think of as preschool - i.e. you leave the kids for a morning or afternoon session, sometimes both; and “nursery”, which always seems to refer to the nursery class in a school (not common where I live - we have separate preschools instead.)

Why can’t EY educators of the UK unite and standardise their setting names?!

angelikacpickles · 17/03/2018 23:14

Here, people seem to call all sorts of preschools Montessoris, whether they actually are Montessori based or now.
