Not really an AIBU, just posted here for traffic.

What do you think about the investigation searching for Jack the Ripper? Do you think they could have identified him by now using DNA if they wanted to? I do.

I think it would make a huge statement about the importance of women and how much it had increased between the late 1800s and now if we managed to finally identify the killer.

soup No, no real hard evidence against anyone but there is circumstantial evidence against some. I agree that there is some circumstantial surrounding Lechmere/Cross but I don't think it is stronger than some of the other suspects with circumstantial evidence. It's well worth, if you haven't, having a good look at the Casebook JTR website and the various discussion forums about him as well as other suspects.

One of the oft-mentioned points by those favouring Lechmere/Cross is the false name as he wanted to hide something. Those who don't favour Lechmere/Cross would say that he could have wanted to hide other nefarious activity that isn't automatically murder but more importantly he gave his real address. If you were a killer, you'd likely give a false address. Or you'd clear off the next day (much easier than to disappear than now). He didn't; he attended the inquest. If he was JTR he was a very cool customer, as not only did he testify at the inquest but kill someone else less than 48 hours later.

I can see why he's considered a suspect, I just think there are others which, while still circumstantial, have a bit more circumstantial than this.

She’s an adult now Graphista. (Not my child either). With most of those cases, it’s not so much things are bad at home, but they’re lured away into it because they’re basically brainwashed into thinking being pimped out is something they want and they’re consenting to.

Never watched Whitechapel. Might give it a go. Saw ‘From Hell’ years ago and that was truly awful.

I went on a comedy Jack the Ripper walk around Shoreditch years ago. It sounds awful but it was actually brilliant. Most of the comedy was based at laughing at the excesses of the Jack the Ripper industry, and there was loads of unrelated local history thrown in.

Shatner yes of course. that was my point. it's all circumstantial so it's very much a 'pick your personal favourite' sort of thing.

Yes I have read the casebook jtr website. It's a good site although a little skewed sometimes, like all these things.

Graphista · 14/03/2018 16:37

Knew not your child. But you say things "not so bad" at home but we rarely know what goes on behind closed doors

ShatnersWig · 14/03/2018 16:48

soup This is a good thread. What's your view on number of victims/killers?

DGRossetti · 14/03/2018 16:53

I'm guessing these files are hiding something like bad police practices, police anti semitism etc.

Well there were problems Graphista, and at least one of her parents was very much responsible for creating the circumstances which made her vulnerable, but without the people who groomed her coming into her life, it would not have come to the point of her running away.

This is a compelling link to Kosminski.

graphista, no, the show isn't about JTR, it's just the first time I ever heard much detail because I tend to avoid stuff like that.

it's more a side issue Elton, some copycat killings occur (or what are thought to be possible copycat killings) and it made me learn a little about it, that's all.

Graphista · 14/03/2018 18:08

Yea that's a shame Elton. It's a confluence of shitty circumstances then but ones that could have been avoided (by the adults around her I mean).

I only said about Whitechapel not really being about jtr so as the pp asking about it didn't mistakenly think it was.

It's good though. I like that there's a character with OCD but it's realistically and not comically handled.
