SIL let DS lick raw cake mixture from a bowl today - turns out the eggs used were 6 WEEKS out of date and stunk to high heaven!!!

Apart from being furious at her fucking stupidity, how long will it be before I can feel safe that DS has avoided what would likely be a pretty violent case of food poisoning??

How did you come by this info ?

DragonBones · 10/03/2018 20:57

The eggs stunk but she carried on making the cake mix, and then let him lick the spoon of said mix? WTF.

jellyandsoup · 10/03/2018 20:57

Why did she use eggs that old in anything?

oldbirdy · 10/03/2018 20:57

You couldn't make a cake with rotten eggs. I mean, you'd be gagging, not licking the spoon.

Eggs last for ages.

missiondecision · 10/03/2018 20:57

Did the The smeller of the eggs that stunk to high heaven stop your son from eating the mixture

junebirthdaygirl · 10/03/2018 20:58

Well we licked raw cake mix out of a bowl our whole childhood with no repurcussions. It was a treat that we fought over.About the eggs. We lived on a farm with our own eggs so no out of date on them . Hopefully he will be fine.

QuiteLikely5 · 10/03/2018 20:59

I doubt after six weeks they’d be that bad otherwise you wouldn’t be able to tolerate the smell if they were rotten

Zippyboo2 · 10/03/2018 20:59

missions excision are you the SIL?!
fannydango may you be shrouded in waterproofs, buckets and have a working washing machine.....good luck!

Ps no idea in answer to your question but really hope it's all fine

SundaySalon · 10/03/2018 21:00

Why would she even make a cake with smelly eggs? Surely she wouldn’t want to eat it herself?!?

spicerack · 10/03/2018 21:02

I lick the cake mix out the bowl every time and have never had food poisoning from it....

If the eggs were that out of date and stank that bad then I doubt anybody would want to lick a mix containing them would they?

spicerack · 10/03/2018 21:02

did she tell yourself she made a cake with smelly out of date eggs?

missiondecision · 10/03/2018 21:02

Has the cake maker lost their sense of smell?? How could someone miss the alarm bells of eggs that smelt to high heaven?

spicerack · 10/03/2018 21:03

you herself*

ShotsFired · 10/03/2018 21:03

Eggs smell of eggs.

Rotten eggs smell like death. There's no way you'd ever make a cake with them.

You are overreacting massively. I think all of us ate cake mix as kids still do and I expect loads of people out 6 week old eggs (and more) every day.

Fannydango · 10/03/2018 21:03

She has form for being a fucking idiot.

They made the cake while I was in the other room. When it was cooked, it didn’t look right and SIL said “oh, do you think the eggs might have been bad?”. I told her I bloody hoped not then went to smell the bowl with some leftover mixture and it reeked. So we checked the egg shells in the bin and they had expired 6 weeks earlier....

Have you ever smelled bad eggs OP? It's not like slightly iffy milk. Bad eggs are RANK. I cracked a bad egg into the frying pan once and we all had to run out of the house into the garden to breathe. We were gagging. The dc were crying. We couldn't face eating eggs for months afterwards. I'm struggling to imagine a scenario where someone is cheerfully cooking with bad eggs and your son is happily licking bad egg batter off a spatula.

LovingLola · 10/03/2018 21:04

I ate an egg yesterday with a date of 2nd January. It was fine.

Whitney168 · 10/03/2018 21:04

I wouldn’t take a blind bit of notice of the date on an egg and I very much doubt anyone would have continued to make a cake with one that had gone off.

If the eggs were bad, you wouldn't need to sniff the mix or look in the bin - the whole room would stink!

PrincessScarlett · 10/03/2018 21:05

How do you know the eggs were 6 WEEKS out of date?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/03/2018 21:06

To be fair, though, OP, I would be quite annoyed with someone who let my child lick cake batter made with eggs six weeks out of date.

etsiketsi · 10/03/2018 21:06

Sell by dates on eggs are ridiculous. Well stored eggs easily keep that long. I rely on the good old water test.

Stunk to high heaven though? How do you know this?

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 10/03/2018 21:06

Believe me if they were off you would have smelt them from the living room

spicerack · 10/03/2018 21:07

I think you just don't like her very much and are looking for reasons to. I never bother with the best before dates on eggs and they're always fine, the smell of rotten eggs would make you throw up or gag and no child would want to lick it
