SIL let DS lick raw cake mixture from a bowl today - turns out the eggs used were 6 WEEKS out of date and stunk to high heaven!!!

Apart from being furious at her fucking stupidity, how long will it be before I can feel safe that DS has avoided what would likely be a pretty violent case of food poisoning??

Sorry, cross posted. Seen that you looked at the shells.

Eggs last for ages. And as others said, if an egg was bad and smelt like death there's no way anyone would be licking the bowl.

FreshStartToday · 10/03/2018 21:10

I understand your frustration. People who are very young or very old shouldn't be given raw egg, and there is always someone who forgets/knows better/ignores the good advice. How old is your ds? He will probably be fine, but if he does develop and upset stomach, you would be entirely reasonable to tell your SIL to come around and deal with the consequences

But Yy to what flaminggoose said. Eggs don't need a use by date. They have a very very effective way of telling you if they are off. And you would have been very aware in the other room, if she had broken open an egg which had gone off. The egg shells must have been smelly because of the bin.

Strax · 10/03/2018 21:10

Yeah, eggs last for months. If they were 6 weeks out of date they were probably about 9 weeks old, that's nothing. Unless they were kept in a hot airing cupboard, they should be fine. And I doubt anyone would be able to lick the cake mix without retching so I expect the mixture smelled to you because you were expecting it to.

MajesticWhine · 10/03/2018 21:11

YABU. Your reaction demonstrates that you just don’t like your SIL.

Fannydango · 10/03/2018 21:11

Um, I don’t understand why you don’t believe me??? Not sure what I’d gain from making this up?

Believe me when I say she’s an idiot - when she was making the cake with them, I was thinking maybe I should supervise more closely because of all the stupid things she’s done with DS in the past but as he’s a little older now, I thought what’s the worst that can happen?

To give you an idea, she has:

  • given DS a knife to play with so he could pretend to be a vet (aged 18 months)
  • let him play with bottles of tablets (same age)
  • suggested it would be fine to drive him a “short way” in the front seat with no car seat when he was a baby

This is no longer the advice given in the UK. Raw eggs are safe to eat.

FrustratedDotCom · 10/03/2018 21:12

Nope

If they were that bad I would expect him to feel grotty soon, but don't worry - surely if they stank that much, they'd have made the mixture taste disgusting and he wouldn't have had more than a tiny bit of it. Hope he'll be okay - she's an idiot though

neveradullmoment99 · 10/03/2018 21:15

Bad eggs smell rotten. No way could they have been that bad. I'm sure he will be fine. I ate raw egg mix all the time as a kid. My dc have also eaten it. They have been fine.

So we checked the egg shells in the bin and they had expired 6 weeks earlier....

If you had the shells in front of you & the eggs had been off you wouldn’t have needed to check the date, you’d know the second you opened the bin

RB68 · 10/03/2018 21:19

I agree re eggs cleared these days - they changed the advice only in the last 6 months or so I believe - cld be wrong time flies these days!!

With regard to how long before you know if they were truly off not on the turn a) I agree you would have known from the other room not have to stick head in bowl or egg shells and b) within an hour or so I reckon he would have been chucking up

Sometimes eggs take on the smell of things around them so eg if in fridge next to onions or something else smelly, the shell is actually porous.

Salmonella was always the fear with eggs and actually this comes from the chickens rather than a turned or bad egg.

I also agree eggs are OK well past sell by dates.

SimonBridges · 10/03/2018 21:23

Raw egg is safe. I’m guessing you eat mayonnaise?
Also they have been declared safe for pregnant women, elderly etc very recently.

If they were bad then everyone in the house would know.

6 weeks out of date is fine.

LeighaJ · 10/03/2018 21:23

Licking the raw cake mix was also a treat when I was growing up and never hurt us.

I've always thought raw eggs smell no matter how fresh and it bothered me more as a kid but obviously didnt stop me from eating the cake mix.

Fannydango · 10/03/2018 21:24

Why the bloody hell would I be lying???! I’m not her biggest fan no, but only because of the thoughtless, stupid things she does.

Ok, I clearly couldn’t smell them from the other room but they did smell - and if you think they didn’t smell enough to be really off then great, hopefully my DS will be fine. And I don’t have an issue with him licking the cake mixture either.

My issue is that she obviously thought there was a chance the eggs would be bad as that’s the first thing she said when she saw the cake hadn’t turned out right - so why would she risk letting him eat the raw mix??!!

The eggs don't know what date was stamped on their shells.

Tbf it does sound like she was hit with the 'stupid stick'. I hope she hasn't "pro" created.

ShotsFired · 10/03/2018 21:30

In the kindest possible way, I think you are smelling "6 week old eggs" and your brain is x100ing it, once you saw the stamp on the shells.

SimonBridges · 10/03/2018 21:30

I don’t think you are lying.
Just exaggerating the danger and problem.

SlackerMum1 · 10/03/2018 21:31

Either way OP if the eggs were bad, food poisoning would likely set in within 12 hours, so if DS is ok in the morning then likely he’s fine. 72 hours and you’re definitely in the clear.

Fannydango · 10/03/2018 21:37

Ok. Thank you to those who have given advice about whether/when DS might be ill.

Maybe my egg-smelling skills aren’t great. But these smelt bad. Ok, maybe not as bad as really rotten eggs would smell, I don’t know. But they did smell! If they didn’t smell, I would’ve probably been ok as I’m not that obsessive about use by dates etc.

To reiterate, it’s not the raw-ness that bothers me, it’s the potential off-ness.

Fannydango · 10/03/2018 21:38

...and yes, definitely hit with the stupid stick!!! No kids, thankfully.
