To be really worried (and absolutely livid!!!)

SIL let DS lick raw cake mixture from a bowl today - turns out the eggs used were 6 WEEKS out of date and stunk to high heaven!!!

Apart from being furious at her fucking stupidity, how long will it be before I can feel safe that DS has avoided what would likely be a pretty violent case of food poisoning??

OP posts:
Terftastic · 10/03/2018 21:38

If the eggs were actually bad - you wouldn't have wanted to pick the shells out of the bin to checked the date stamp. I'm telling you.

Cakes can go wrong for more reasons than bad eggs. Your son will be fine.

Lizzie48 · 10/03/2018 21:40

I rather think you like dramatising your posts with question marks an exclamation marks!
That in itself makes me think you're enjoyed making your SIL look bad.

Hopefully your DS will be fine. But considering her past form according to you, why weren't you in the kitchen making sure all was well?? Hmm

GnotherGnu · 10/03/2018 21:42

If your DS were going to have a tummy upset as a result of this, it would start to happen within a couple of hours. So if the cake-making session was this afternoon and if your DS is still not showing any symptoms, he's very likely to be absolutely fine.

Takfujuimoto · 10/03/2018 21:43

If she's so thick why'd you let her bake with DS? Confused

PrincessScarlett · 10/03/2018 21:49

If your DS is fine by tomorrow morning then you can relax.

Some people without kids have no idea about things such as needing car seats and playing with inappropriate items. It does seem like you don't like her as your reaction is so extreme.

Thehogfather · 10/03/2018 21:52

You don't miss bad eggs. As to what you think of the smell, food I'm not fond of always smells a bit off to me, even when it really isn't. So having convinced yourself the eggs were bad it's not surprising you thought they smelt funny.

I'm surprised that if she's so clueless she gave an 18m old a knife to play with you'd leave them cooking together unsupervised.

Creambun2 · 10/03/2018 21:57

If your that concerned about her around your DS after the knife incident then why leave her alone with him?

Or is she giving you childcare?

angelikacpickles · 10/03/2018 22:01

There's no way your DS would have licked the spoon if the eggs were off.

So you were there and smelled that they smelled bad?
Why didn't you say he's not licking that?

Caulk · 10/03/2018 22:12

OP, now is the time to own your feelings. If you feel livid then feel livid. You don’t need people on the internet to tell you not to feel livid.

However it’s worth separating feelings from fact - or you’ll end up exaggerating to ensure everyone meets you in feeling as livid as you do.

DragonBones · 10/03/2018 22:14

I use the water method regardless of what date it says.

willstarttomorrow · 10/03/2018 22:19

I totally ignore BB dates on eggs because I am incredibly slack. Only once in my life have I come across a bad egg, it was totally obvious as soon as that egg was cracked and even with my slovenly standards it went staight in the (outside) bin. I think it is very unlikely a bad egg entered the cake.

SarcySue · 10/03/2018 22:20

I'm a baker and have cracked many thousands of eggs over the years. I have a very limited sense of smell, but Jesus in heaven, let me assure you that there's no mistaking a rotten egg. It goes beyond any stench you can imagine; it is indeed the smell of death. Even having emptied said vessels of evil down the loo, I could smell them afterwards. I can still smell them 😖

There is no way in the world that anyone could eat such a thing, nor bake with them as they look as gross as they smell. They were out of date, not rotten.

I understand your concern, though I reckon instantaneous vomiting would occur on consumption of such fetid fare. Shame your SIL doesn't come with the same built-in warning!!

queenofarles · 10/03/2018 22:21

What type of cake was she making ? If you smelled a bad smell from the batter leftover and not the smell of chocolate/vanilla or whatever flavour she was making , I'd be a bit worried too,

Dustysparrow · 10/03/2018 22:23

Even if the eggs weren't massively rotten it certainly sounds as though they were on the turn. Surely there is a point in between them being safe to eat and them being rancid where they will be somewhere in the middle in terms of how bad they smell.

YANBU OP - I'm not surprised you are pissed off. I have had food poisoning 3 times (not from my own cooking btw!!) and it is no joke, you cannot be too careful. Your sister sounds like a total idiot.

Intheblackhole · 10/03/2018 22:27

I think it's two different issues, a rotten egg with accompanying awful smell of hydrogen sulphide, and the risk of salmonella infection from an egg - if he did get salmonella Inthink it would be quick like within 6 to 12 hours diarrhoea which can be blood stained and is a notifiable disease. However I'm sorry I don't know exactly how much of a risk eating a raw out of date egg is re salmonella . Hope he's ok but if he gets bad loose stool take him to the GP and they can send off stool sample in a pot to check.

There is a very low risk of salmonella poisoning from an egg now.

HermionesRightHook · 10/03/2018 22:38

Six weeks over isn't awful for eggs, is it? They last ages in the fridge, though even I wouldn't eat raw cake mix with very out of date eggs in even if they smelled fine.

However, they are unlikely to make him sick if they didn't smell appalling - as everyone else has said you would definitely, definitely definitely know if they were actually off. And eggs in the UK are safe to eat raw now, they've even lifted the ban for pregnant women.

She's still daft though, as if you give someone else's kid a spoon lick without asking if it's ok first.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 10/03/2018 22:39

If the eggs were rotten you'd have smelled it from the other room within a minute of them being cracked. We have ours from a local farm and one went bad once and the whole house (even the upstairs rooms) reeked for hours after we'd evacuated and fumigated.

YAB a little overdramatic. Every child licks cake mix. It's a rite of passage.

HermionesRightHook · 10/03/2018 22:39

Not really DustySparrow - they turn bad incredibly quickly.

SuburbanRhonda · 10/03/2018 22:42

Raw egg is safe. I’m guessing you eat mayonnaise?

The eggs in mayonnaise are pasteurised, unless it’s homemade.

Gacapa · 10/03/2018 22:47

Oh god the smell of a rotten egg is like nothing else on earth. You actually get the instinct to run.
