Boss smashed my phone - who should pay?

So my boss/ friend knocked my iphone off a sofa and smashed the screen. She has offered her husband to replace the screen as he has done it before. However I'm concerned that if he breaks it more I still have to pay the contract for 17 more months which I cannot afford to pay for a broken phone. I also know the phones are never as good once the screen has been replaced so I would feel much more comfortable having it done by someone who really knows what their doing. (She said her husband would heat my phone with a hairdryer to make the screen pop out which I'm sure can't be good for the device?) AIBU to ask her to pay for it to be sent to apple and have the screen replaced professionally? She must have business insurance she could claim on?

Do you not have insurance on it?

MrsJoshDun · 06/03/2018 18:12

I kind of think you shouldn’t have left it in a place where someone could Knock it off.

MrsJoshDun · 06/03/2018 18:13

I’ve replaced my own Samsung screen and replaced. It was simple to do. You certainly don’t need an Apple repair. Local independent repair shops do them round here for about £30.

hotcrossbunsandtea · 06/03/2018 18:13

Who left it on the arm of the sofa? Is it in a protective case?

This sort of thing should be covered by insurance really.

Coastalcommand · 06/03/2018 18:13

Why was it on a sofa? Had she left it there?

Chattymummyhere · 06/03/2018 18:14

She should pay. A hair dryer or heat is a mentioned way online for removing the glass from the digitalizer. As long as they are the rights and competent it’s not hard. I’ve replaced batteries/screens.

Bufferingkisses · 06/03/2018 18:14

Was she in the role of boss or friend at the time? Sitting on your sofa indicates she was acting as friend when this happened?

Chattymummyhere · 06/03/2018 18:14

Right parts.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/03/2018 18:15

My husband can replace iPhone and IPad screens. They work just as they did before once he’s done it. It’s really not difficult and yes, you do have to heat it up with a hairdryer to release the glue or something but it doesn’t damage the device.

I’d let her DH do it under the condition of if you’re not happy she pays for someone else to do it.

Auspiciouspanda · 06/03/2018 18:15

If you have someone do a knock off repair then you void your warranty and any future faults Apple won’t touch your phone.

Also new iPhones have a wonderful feature that eventually the phone will detect it’s not a genuine Apple screen and turn off.

Viviennemary · 06/03/2018 18:16

You should have put it in a safer place. If it gets accidently knocked then I don't think you can demand the person pays for a new phone. Claim from your insurance.

GreenTulips · 06/03/2018 18:16

You buy the full screen and not just the glass

Usually £20 on eBay - easy to replace yourself

strawberrysparkle · 06/03/2018 18:17

It was an accident, either get it covered on your own insurance or let him replace it.

Buglife · 06/03/2018 18:17

Many places replace screens on phones, Apple Care is hugely expensive. Don’t you have phone insurance for repairs? I’d find it hard to charge a friend for such an accidental damage to be honest.

Chattymummyhere · 06/03/2018 18:17

Aus it’s just replacing the glass so the phone won’t know. That’s why you have to heat it up to remove it from the digitilizer.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/03/2018 18:18

She should pay and I would want a genuine Apple repair so as not to void the warranty. If you’ve got insurance then she should pay the excess.

PerfectPenquins · 06/03/2018 18:19

If Apple do have such a trick as to turn off phones with new non branded screens it certainly isn’t very good lol

teaiseverything · 06/03/2018 18:19

The paramedics dropped my phone on the floor when I was off my tits in an ambulance. I laughed (thanks gas and air and morphine) and got a new one on insurance. Shit happens.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/03/2018 18:22

I should have added that I probably wouldn’t ask someone to pay but I would think less of them if they didn’t offer.

HotChocolat · 06/03/2018 18:23

Thanks for the replies. It wasn't resting on the arm of the sofa just sat in middle of the seat - not the best place I know but it wasn't exactly an accident waiting to happen if you know what I mean. I don't have insurance as the excess is £150. We were working at the time. Im nervous about letting her husband do it as now some people have said apple will know and switch the phone off?!

Claim on your own insurance.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/03/2018 18:25

You are responsible for leaving the phone in a place where this could happen. It was an accident, either put it through your own insurance or get it fixed yourself. You friend is being nice offering to fix it for you.

BlondeB83 · 06/03/2018 18:25

Ah sorry just seen you don’t have it.

BlondeB83 · 06/03/2018 18:25

Honestly, I would get it done yourself through Apple.
