Boss smashed my phone - who should pay?

So my boss/ friend knocked my iphone off a sofa and smashed the screen. She has offered her husband to replace the screen as he has done it before. However I'm concerned that if he breaks it more I still have to pay the contract for 17 more months which I cannot afford to pay for a broken phone. I also know the phones are never as good once the screen has been replaced so I would feel much more comfortable having it done by someone who really knows what their doing. (She said her husband would heat my phone with a hairdryer to make the screen pop out which I'm sure can't be good for the device?) AIBU to ask her to pay for it to be sent to apple and have the screen replaced professionally? She must have business insurance she could claim on?

I had my screen repaired for about 40 quid a year ago. Although I think you shouldn't leave it in a knock off able place.

steff13 · 06/03/2018 18:27

I think the fault ultimately lies with the person who left the phone on the sofa. If you're comfortable allowing her husband to replace the screen, I think that's fine, but if you're not, I don't think you should ask her to pay to send it to Apple.

Sarsparella · 06/03/2018 18:28

If you don’t want her husband to fix it find a local independent place, it’ll cost about £30-40

Tbh if you don’t want to pay the insurance I think it’s unreasonable to expect them to pay the extortionate Apple prices

namechangedtoday15 · 06/03/2018 18:29

She's your boss. Whatever the rights / wrongs of it, is there a way around it just to avoid any risk of falling out?

theWarOnPeace · 06/03/2018 18:29

I don’t agree your boss should pay. It wasn’t being looked after by its owner, has no insurance, and seeing as it’s now broken - no protective case? It’s easy to knock things over, it’s not your their fault that it fell and is unprotected in any way. It’s very frustrating, but a screen replacement is all you can hope for really as you chose not to insure or cover.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/03/2018 18:29

If it was on the seat of the sofa I don’t see the problem, I often leave mine on the seat next to me, it’s not as though you left it on the arm to be knocked off.

BoomBoomsCousin · 06/03/2018 18:37

Apple don't switch your phone off if someone else replaces the screen, it doesn't even void the warranty anymore . Swapping a screen out isn't that hard and lots of people do it every day. I think your boss probably ought to pay for it to be done by an authorized place though but friendship can complicate things sometimes - would a promise to buy you a new one if her DH screws up satisfy you?

TheFairyCaravan · 06/03/2018 18:37

I don’t believe that Apple are going to be turning phones off tbh. They didn’t notice DS2’s screen had been replaced when they changed the battery under the £20 thing they’ve got going on atm.

beboldbebluntbehonest · 06/03/2018 18:43

Try googling your local apple approved repair place. They will be cheaper and the new screen will be under its own warranty if it fails at all after it's been fixed and they will be repair again for free. It also doesn't void your current warranty on your phone. Not worth getting someone to do a hack job if it fails for some other reason and apple won't touch it because of the non apple approved part that's been fitted.

eggsandwich · 06/03/2018 18:43

We got my Dd’s iPad screen replaced not by apple and we ended up getting a new iPad as the screen kept jumping, my fault for sitting on it in the first place.Grin

Is your phone under warranty?

If it is, unless you get an Apple repair the warranty is broken.

hotcrossbunsandtea · 06/03/2018 18:48

Once it's fixed, get it a screen protector and a decent cover!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 06/03/2018 18:50

What he's offering is essentially what Apple would do anyway. They won't stitch off your phone, and could only know if they physically see it (and even then may not notice unless looking for it).

As pp linked, it looks like your warranty wouldn't even be affected either. I'd say yes please and be more careful where I left it

upsideup · 06/03/2018 18:52

Well Im teaching my DC that it is their responsability to keep their phones from being broken, including having a proper case and not leaving it somewhere where it can get broken. If ones of their friends broke it in the same situation of your I would not being going round their getting their parents to pay.
I think the same rule should apply when you are adults, it was kind of her to offer her husband to do it but if you are not happy with that you should pay for it yourself.

TheNecroscope · 06/03/2018 18:54

My iPhone screen smashed in exactly the same way, falling off a sofa. I'd just taken the screen protector off to replace it so there was no protector on. 😖
Apple quoted an insane amount to replace it, like £240 or something. I got it done at our local phone accessories/repair place for £20, works perfectly.

Amanduh · 06/03/2018 18:56

How the hell would she knock it off the middle of a sofa? If it was in the middle of a sofa seat and she didnt see it and sat on the sofa and it flew off, I’d say it was your fault for leaving it in the middle of a seat..

Get a decent repair place and ask for the amount if you’ve got the courage?

Kestant · 06/03/2018 18:57

People have been injured by faulty phones. Beware of that risk in an amateur repair job.

I would suggest thanking her for the offer, but would she meet you 50/50 on the apple cost. It does not have to be all or nothing.

Spartacunt · 06/03/2018 19:00

Timpsons do repairs on screens for £40. Apple charge over £200 and take weeks. Get it done cheaply and buy a cover for it...

Psychobabble123 · 06/03/2018 19:00

Boss or not, you left it lying around so its your responsibility I'm afraid. If you can't afford it try to claim on your home insurance, providing you have accidental damage cover.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 06/03/2018 19:05

I think Apple has a warranty for 2 years, how long have you had the phone?

MouseholeCat · 06/03/2018 19:05

YABU- I wouldn't expect her to pay. You left your phone lying around and an accident happened. Be more careful with where you put your expensive possessions in future.

mojito55 · 06/03/2018 19:22

Apple will not "know and turn the phone off". However, you're right that sometimes replacement screens don't work as well. Got mine replaced at a dodgy shop and it glitches out sometimes.

TheCatsMother44 · 06/03/2018 19:26

I'd repair it myself at one of those places that does it for about £30 as accidents happen and for the sake of such a small amount I wouldn't ask for any money back.

Aragog · 06/03/2018 19:37

I had mine replaced a while back by an I'd independentl place - right parts but not an apple authorised place or anything. Was much cheaper than via Apple. Worked perfectly well thereafter and when I traded it in for a new phone when my contract was up there were no issues at all and I got the same amount trade in as I would have with no repair. I know many people - mainly teens - with replaced screens and non have had an issues whatsoever.

I'd agree so long as it was repaired in a manner which meant my phone worked as normal (for a given period of time) and looked exactly the same as an Apple replacement screen.
