Boss smashed my phone - who should pay?

So my boss/ friend knocked my iphone off a sofa and smashed the screen. She has offered her husband to replace the screen as he has done it before. However I'm concerned that if he breaks it more I still have to pay the contract for 17 more months which I cannot afford to pay for a broken phone. I also know the phones are never as good once the screen has been replaced so I would feel much more comfortable having it done by someone who really knows what their doing. (She said her husband would heat my phone with a hairdryer to make the screen pop out which I'm sure can't be good for the device?) AIBU to ask her to pay for it to be sent to apple and have the screen replaced professionally? She must have business insurance she could claim on?

If it’s your phone, then it’s your responsibility to keep it safe. Either accept your bosses offer and let her h fix it, or don’t. But don’t expect someone else to pay for your carelessness.

I’d say your boss should foot the bill for a proper screen replacement through Apple. Apple do not supply the screens to anyone else so you will not be getting a screen that is up to par with a genuine one. You can’t be far into your contract with 17 months left and you shouldn’t have to put up with a crappy screen for the remainder of the time.

As for Apple shutting off your phone if you get the screen replaced elsewhere I’ve never heard that one before but it is very easy to spot a fake display if you’ve looked at a large number of real ones beforehand so Apple store employees will be able to tell. You void all warranties if someone other than an Apple Genius/Family Room Specialist opens the device up so if you bring it to an Apple store after her husband has a go at swapping it out they most likely will send you on your way.

Also, heating the phone up with a hairdryer to prepare it for opening it sounds absolutely mental. The whole phone could be damaged from the heat and then you’re left with a useless brick.

If you make a Genius Bar appointment you can get a quote printed out or emailed to you for how much a screen replacement will be. You do not have to go ahead with the replacement at this point or at all if you don’t want to but at least you could give it to your boss and see if she’s willing to pay for it.

If you had put an egg on the seat and your boss had sat on it would you blame them? Of course you wouldn’t because it’s a stupid thing to do to leave an egg on a seat. Exact same thing with the phone, 100% your fault for leaving it somewhere where it could get broken,

Your possession, your responsibility to take adequate care of it.
If you leave it somewhere that it could be damaged by accident - that is your responsibility.
Just go for the replacement screen.
Then get a screen protector and case!

It was your responsibility and you left it there. You should pay for it I think or accept her husband fixing it.
