Dog shit everywhere :(

HandbagKrabby · 06/03/2018 12:32

Just took my baby for a nice walk through piles and piles of dog shit. I counted 20 dog shits in the 100 yards around my house, loads more elsewhere. No one on my street has a dog.

Aibu to think it’s not just a tiny minority of irresponsible dog owners who don’t clean up after their dogs?

To be honest I was thinking the same yesterday, I think it is to do with the snow, I noticed that a lot of people feel they can leave it in the snow, then it has melted and hey presto, there it all is. I pick mine up ( not mine, the dogs!!) whatever the circumstances, I hate that other dog owners give me a bad name.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 06/03/2018 12:38

I’m not saying there aren’t plenty of feckless dog owners around, but it’s not always dog. I find crap all over both my front and back garden, it’s either cat or fox but if I didn’t know it wasn’t dog I would assume it was iyswim.

HandbagKrabby · 06/03/2018 12:42

It’s not cat or fox - it’s definitely dog, especially the shit I had to scrape off my boots because I was too busy trying to avoid it with the buggy that I walked in some. I can’t describe how much dog shit there is - it took me several attempts to find a bit of grass that didn’t have dog shit on to wipe my boots.

I’ve complained to the council but I’m not holding my breath. Though I will have to if it gets warmer...

Responsible dog owner here with poo bags in pockets of every coat and fleece I own. I can understand your annoyance. I hate it.I hate dodging round it and having to check the buggy wheels. But all my friends that are dog owners pick up.I've gone back home for a poo bag and returned immediately when my boy was caught short and I was mortified to have run out,and to leave it for 5 minutes.Someone near me takes their dog out at the same time and leaves the same sized and colured pile in the same place .I've considered a stake out and handing them a bag.TBH I've just had an incident on the road with someone speeding, overtaking at a mini roundabout and driving aggressively with no brake lights. Doubt he's no insurance. Unfortunately a small minority of drivers are unfit and antisocial. Same goes for dog owners sadly.

I live in a snowy country and this is definitely a thing :-(

Theresasmayshoes11 · 06/03/2018 12:48

It’s disgusting op I have a dog and always carry bags and a water spray incase it’s squidgy Sad

I agree with penny I think it’s been the snow for some reason

RaininSummer · 06/03/2018 12:51

Vile people, saying that as a dog owner. Why on earth would they think it fine to leave shit in the snow? We used to have a street near me we named dog poo alley. Residents put signs up and that seemed to help a lot.

NoSquirrels · 06/03/2018 12:52

It's worse after snow. I always pick up, and yesterday I have to admit I was pretty outraged by the enormous dump left just in the middle of my entrance to the driveway off the road. Who does that? In a field/grassy area I can often understand - perhaps dog is off-lead and the owner didn't see it go (although that's a whole other pet peeve of mine) but on the main pavement near a busyish road, the dog would have been on-lead and so some arsehole thought it was OK to leave it for me to clear up.

Daffodilsveuve · 06/03/2018 12:52

This is awful and it's giving us responsible dog owners a bad name.

Daffodilsveuve · 06/03/2018 12:52

They seriously need to police it

HandbagKrabby · 06/03/2018 12:56

It is the snow that’s enabled selfish dog owners to think they can leave their dog’s shit everywhere. The first time it snowed there was steaming piles of the stuff smack bang in the middle of the paths. To me an irresponsible dog owner isn’t one that chooses to go out in the snow to walk their dog - they obviously care about their dog and its wellbeing. It’s everyone else they don’t give a shit about.

Honestly you would be appalled if you’re the type of dog owner that cleans up if you came here. It’s a hot spot for people that like their uncontrollable dogs to run off lead and do as they please as it’s mainly pedestrianised.

I have bought a bright yellow chalk paint spray which I use on the ones I find, and also on the little black poo filled bags that are also abandoned at the side of the pavement and sometimes in the centre. I also report it on FixMyStreet.

It may not stop it but it makes people more aware and possibly less likely to do it, and the colour helps people to see and avoid stepping in it.

We are on the route to the popular dog walking spot and most people are OK but there are a couple I would like to catch and photograph.

Ask the council for a poo bin maybe?

CruCru · 06/03/2018 13:04

Can I recommend the Clean Islington app? It can be used to report dog poo / graffiti / fly tipping all over the UK - not just Islington (and I think it works in Jersey too). It was made by the LoveCleanStreets people.

So far this month I have reported over 200 different lots of graffiti / dog poo / fly tipping (and we were away for half term).

How quickly the issue gets sorted out will depend on the council - Islington are quite quick, Hackney are super quick, Hertfordshire are not particularly quick. You get the idea.

The only real downside is that I'm now sure that everyone around me thinks I am just a very peculiar woman who enjoys taking photos of dog shit with her phone. This is not the case.

greensleevess · 06/03/2018 13:15

This really gets my goat, and I say that as a dog owner! Down at my local park there's a little alley way leading up to it and I call it dog shit alley it's disgusting. I can't understand why people don't pick it up! I have a baby in the buggy and I'm pregnant and I still bloody manage it!

I've seen people (usually older men on their own round here) walk their dog off lead and leave it so far behind that it craps and they "didn't see it". Just a crap excuse to not pick up. Not only that but it's dangerous to not keep an eye on your dog off lead! Anything could happen to it, or it might have a go at another dog or child for some reason but because they aren't looking they won't know. Very irresponsible dog ownership.
Sorry, tangent there Blush

Eliza9917 · 06/03/2018 13:15

@RaininSummer we had a dog-shit-alley!

Vile place.

tortelliniforever · 06/03/2018 13:19

Yanbu - on the way to school today we counted a dog poo on average every 3 steps.

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 06/03/2018 13:22

It’s the same here but the snow is no excuse, it’s the same all year round.
What can you do about it though? What can the council do?

I’ve started taking poo bags out with me (I don’t have a dog) and picking it up, but I don’t see why I should have to.

Tempted to make my own posters now!
“PICK UP YOUR DOG SHIT YOU SCRUFFY COW” Grin

HandbagKrabby · 06/03/2018 13:30

tortellini that sounds like our school too - dog shit everywhere because it’s near a couple of places people like to walk their dogs.

cru I will look at the app - I have reported to the council. I don’t think there’s enough space on my camera roll to photograph each dog shit - it would be a full time job! Smile

Lethaldrizzle · 06/03/2018 13:41

My theory is that dog owners only pick up poo when there's someone around to observe them doing it. Otherwise they leave it. How else do you explain all the dog poo and yet all the owners say they pick it up Hmm

IdaDown · 06/03/2018 13:43

Cru - you should edit the photos together and enter the film for Sundance Fest. With some mournful, atmospheric background music. I recon you win.

Hoppinggreen · 06/03/2018 13:44

Some wanker had left a huge pile of dog shit right outside the school gates this morning. Luckily being a dog owner every pocket has a poo bag in it so I whipped one out and picked it up - it wasn’t any as it had already been trodden in a few times.
Totally gross and I don’t usually pick up other people’s but there would have been a trail of dog shit all around School otherwise

ToastyFingers · 06/03/2018 13:47

There's so much dog shit between my house and DDs school. Honestly, it's unreal.

It must be the same people all the time too, because everywhere else is fine, but this one street is fucking covered.

BlurryFace · 06/03/2018 13:51

I do think it's a small minority who never pick up, but it doesn't look like it when they do the same route once or twice a day. I always pick up after my dog - except maybe a couple of times when I've been sifting through leaf litter with a poo bag on each hand for 5 minutes and still not found anything.Blush

ScattyCharly · 06/03/2018 13:51

Yep, snow melted here to reveal shit.

DNA database - the only way. Paid for by dog owners.

You dog's shit gets found in public 3 times = Your dog is taken away

Spot checks in public by dog wardens (eg saliva) = Your dog's DNA isn't in the system, it gets taken away.

Sad that it needs to come to this, but it really does. Last week I cleaned 2 piles of dog shit from my own driveway. Someone just let their dog wander onto my property, and take a big shit.

TheQueenOfWands · 06/03/2018 13:54

People only pick up the shit if there's someone watching.

Someone let their dog shit on our the other day. When confronted they didn't even have a gag.
