Channel 4 news.

Are all men who come into wealth/fame or power like this?

I say this as a mother of a much beloved DS, who has a good paternal relationship and worshiped my grandad however I witnessed my ex changing into this type of sleazy cunt as he gained success.

It's not like I hate men is what I'm trying to say. But it's so prolific makes me feel ill.

Not sure whether to put this in AIBU, relationships or feminism. I'll start with AIBU.

Can you say what he is supposed to have done?

LucreziaBoredYa · 05/03/2018 19:55

Molested, intimidated, sexually abused young women he had employed and others.

BeanFobbedOff · 05/03/2018 19:56

And water is wet.

Anyone who has ever met him, or knows anyone who worked at Harrods, knows this. He abused his power for decades.

GrabbyMcGrabby · 05/03/2018 19:56

He used to check out female staff on the store CCTV.

Well I have just googled al fayed allegations and there is lots of articles, with an expose from 1997, so I don't think this is fresh news.

Disgusting though.

TSSDNCOP · 05/03/2018 19:58

I am staggered by this news. Said no one that read it ever.

LucreziaBoredYa · 05/03/2018 19:59

I didn't realise that Bean. I'm just fed up of this avalanche of sleaze from celebs or people with money who feel they can do whateverTF they want to whomever they want.

Growingboys · 05/03/2018 20:00

I thought everyone knew this

ourkidmolly · 05/03/2018 20:00

What a shocker. Not.

ForalltheSaints · 05/03/2018 20:01

Not new news. Sadly.

StripySocksAndDocs · 05/03/2018 20:01

Al Fayed a sleaze!!!! I simply can't believe it!!!

Not even vaugely surprised. In fact, I'm so not surprised I thought it was already known about him.

BeanFobbedOff · 05/03/2018 20:02

I'm fed up too, Bean. But at least people are being listened to, so hopefully change is afoot?

SnibbleAgain · 05/03/2018 20:03

So what can be done.

This has been going on forever, now there is a new sense that it's not OK, that it's understandable that the women (often girls) don't report it, that it's reprehensible and it's in that area where things probably ought to be somehow illegal but aren't quite (which the men like this take advantage of to the max of course)...

So what can be done?

Do we want legal solutions (dififcult).
Better employment laws?
Some kind of harassment at work hotline independent of employer?

I mean I have literally no idea but everyone suddenly talking about it and not in the old way of "they know what they're getting into" - what now?

DalekDalekDalek · 05/03/2018 20:04

Are all men who come into wealth/fame or power like this?

No, you just don't hear stories about the men who aren't like that. It would be a pretty boring story...

Trailedanderror · 05/03/2018 20:04

Commen knowledge. I do believe that we're coming into a new puritanical age. Women and girls won't take jobs where they have to be alone with older men, won't share rooms or travel with non relatives.

SnibbleAgain · 05/03/2018 20:13

Is it puritanical not to want to be sexually harassed by much older more powerful men when you're very young / barely out of school?

LucreziaBoredYa · 05/03/2018 20:15

I obviously need to up my sleaze-detector but I didn't know about him until the news tonight.

My point was more that every 5 minutes it seems you hear more of it and it depresses.

Doesn't help that my exH could have given Weinstein a run for his money.

I don't want to believe most men can be corrupted that way, by money/power, I really don't. Hopefully as a pp said we just don't hear those stories.

OP posts:
DalekDalekDalek · 05/03/2018 20:19

Most men can't.

If you judge the entire population by the people in prison you would assume that everyone is a convicted criminal. This is the same, you're perception becomes skewed

SnibbleAgain · 05/03/2018 20:20

It's a worryingly large minority though who are dodgy to women and girls (and sometimes men and boys) in whatever ways they are able to be.

Pretty much all women know this from their own experience - I've not had too much dodgy at work but plenty of street stuff etc.

KERALA1 · 05/03/2018 20:23

Friend of a friend worked in Harrods perfume counter as a student so heard from horses mouth.

Surprised you are surprised op!

RadioDorothy · 05/03/2018 20:24

I knew someone that worked for him as far back as 1998, she always said he was a nasty letch.

hubbabubbanightmare · 05/03/2018 20:26

If it looks like a duck and it swims like a duck and it quacks like a duck....

No, not all men in power, not at all. But sociopathy is found in a higher proportion at the top levels of corporate life and also in sex offenders - they are a cross over group for lacking empathy and having issues with control/power.

Bugjune · 05/03/2018 20:26

Men do it because they can, simple as that; they're not monsters they're mere opportunists. Hopefully it's changing now.

FloppyDoodle · 05/03/2018 20:30

I hadn't heard of it, but tbh it really doesn't surprise me.
