Channel 4 news.

Are all men who come into wealth/fame or power like this?

I say this as a mother of a much beloved DS, who has a good paternal relationship and worshiped my grandad however I witnessed my ex changing into this type of sleazy cunt as he gained success.

It's not like I hate men is what I'm trying to say. But it's so prolific makes me feel ill.

Not sure whether to put this in AIBU, relationships or feminism. I'll start with AIBU.

It was all to make Hasnat Khan jealous

MsHarry · 05/03/2018 21:09

and I still can't believe Trump is still in power after those recordings of him admitting to grabbing women by "the pussy"! The President of the USA ffs!!

LucreziaBoredYa · 05/03/2018 21:09

Hope it's not DM fare. Will get it deleted if so.

Did you really think Diana was in lurrrve with Dodi?

As I recall she was in love with his access to yachts and hotels, everyone in the tabloids thought he was a plank and was sick of hearing of the pair of them, it seemed odds on they were about to split.

And then Paris happened and they were entwined in saintly love forever.

Helmetbymidnight · 05/03/2018 21:18

You think now that a few disgusting men have been called out, we are entering an age of strict religious discipline?

Really?

Butteredparsn1ps · 05/03/2018 21:25

And water is wet

This.

pigshavecurlytails · 05/03/2018 21:30

surely this isn't news? It's a bit like when I heard that Blockbusters had gone bust, my main surprise was that it hadn't gone bust years earlier. Of course he's a sleaze, you just have to look at him or hear him speak once or twice to work that out.

Loonoon · 05/03/2018 21:35

I am surprised that this would be a headline. He has been notorious for treating his female staff like a pick and mix counter for years. DCs are grown up now but we discouraged them for applying for weekend work in Harrods for exactly that reason.

Bekabeech · 05/03/2018 21:40

It's really not "news". It was common knowledge when I worked there in the 80s. He liked Blondes.

As for Diana and Dodi - well it was very reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy and Onassis to me. Both very vulnerable women, who were ripe for being love bombed (and didn't have MN to explain red flags to them).

MmeGuillotine · 05/03/2018 21:51

I was wondering how long this would take for him to be accused. Someone I used to know used to work for Harrods years ago and told us all some pretty grotty stories about the sort of stuff that went on.

Snowyhere2018 · 05/03/2018 22:01

This is depressingly unsurprising. The Daily Mail is a bag of Shite.

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/03/2018 22:30

Many many years ago, I worked at Harrods for several years This is not new. The Cosmetic & Perfumery staff were particularly targeted.

Rainbunny · 05/03/2018 22:43

I worked there over the Christmas period for a couple of years running when I was in university. I didn't know of any specific incidents but he was known as generally sleazy. I was once instructed to personally deliver a bottle of champagne to some high up Harrods exec which was a nerve wracking experience. I walked it all the way up to the exec offices and finally found the right office and walked into the largest, dimly lit office I'd ever seen. The exec was there lounging on a sofa laughing with another man. They both went silent as I entered and stared at me while I walked across the (endless) carpet to give him the champagne. He didn't say thank you or anything so I walked back out as they stared at me. He was so hostile that I was sure I must have done something really wrong, I fully expected to be fired on the spot when I returned to my department (I wasn't, nothing happened after that). I wondered later if they were disappointed because they were hoping for a prettier/sexier girl to deliver their champagne. The supervisor who sent me was a very non-nonsense woman and I can fully believe she deliberately sent me because I was neat and understated but a plain jane compared to some of the women working there.

starlightafar · 05/03/2018 22:46

The thing is that behaviour like this is so entrenched into British high society that there is a top down cascade of misogyny and treatment of women as sex objects.
So report after report, nothing will ever change.

wheresmyphone · 05/03/2018 22:47

Old news. And when are people going to challenge Richard Bransons behaviour.....mate worked as an air steward....lost count of how many times he thought it appropriate "his" air stewards wouldn't mind being picked up and thrown over his shoulders.....very odd!

Queenoftheblitz · 05/03/2018 22:51

Yes Branson was always doing the over shoulder thing for the cameras.
I'd heard about Fayed for many years.

Jon66 · 05/03/2018 22:56

One of the problems with this is that despite there being a law against it, yes it is sexual assault if somebody puts their hand on your arse, leg, breast etc if it is not consensual, the law has not been enforced for years. I remember reporting this as a 10 year old to the police and being ridiculed and then ignored because the perpetrator was 'a nice family man'. Anyway, moving on, at last women are finding a voice. Lets hope the police and CPS take action and these men are held to account in a court of law. Incidentally to the person who said lets hope if the perpetrators are found to be not guilty they are sued into oblivion, you cannot be sued for things said in open court given as evidence. Thank god. I hope women give support to other women for whom it is difficult to report such things, and try to improve and maintain a society which makes reporting rape and sexual assault easier, not more difficult. Rape and sexual assault in the absence of proof is very difficult to substantiate. Lets not make it any harder than it already is please.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/03/2018 23:22

Hardly socking news

As someone else said anyone who met him or worked in Harrods knew this

He had a thing for young women with long blonde hair

Bouledeneige · 06/03/2018 00:15

I thought everyone knew this too. I had pals working at Harrods 25 years ago and it was well known.

CadyHeron · 06/03/2018 00:19

No, you just don't hear stories about the men who aren't like that. It would be a pretty boring story...

Too true - lots of nice ones out there, you just don't hear it about as let's face it, they're not newsworthy, are they.

Bouledeneige · 06/03/2018 00:20

Anyone know any others we aren't aware of?

Queenoftheblitz · 06/03/2018 01:33

I read a bio about him years ago. It said he invited females to his pool party but told the black girls not to get in the water - a real rat of a man.

Obi1Kenobi · 06/03/2018 01:35

He is renowned for being a sleaze. He likes to play HR when hiring new staff. It been going on for years. No one stays very long within his ‘company’.

bananafish81 · 06/03/2018 07:27

I used to work for one of Harrods' marketing agencies

In about 2006 the Sunday Times business gossip column wrote about the 'Chairman's ladies', Al Fayed's not so secret internal spy network of female employees. He responded by suing them. This stoked the fire and every time a shitty lawyers letter arrived, the ST would publish even more about him

I was in a meeting whereby one of the Harrods exec board angrily demanded to know why the big brand campaign wasn't planned to be in the Sunday Times Style magazine

'Because your gaffer is suing them and we were told we weren't allowed to trade with them!!'

He was suing media publishers left right and centre for anything they wrote about his behaviour (almost always completely true)

BeanFobbedOff · 08/03/2018 16:13

Wowsers, Max Clifford! : popbitch.com/2018/03/max-impact/

He talks a lot about Al Fayed and how what he did was fine, as Al Fayed gave loads of money to chatity, and besides, those girls/women knew what they were signing up to when they took jobs with him. Hmmmm.

None of this in the video is news to me* but seeing him say all that is chilling. Even if it was 10 years ago.

  • apart from the clintons thing - say what?
