To ask a fairly boring question about your photos

Yeah I have two very young kids and therefore have about 3000 photos on my phone. I wish I was exaggerating.

I occasionally send an order to Photobox to get a batch printed. I have some framed. The ones that aren’t framed are in a drawer. I have some on Facebook and Instagram.

There is no order to this chaos and I need a resolution for online photo storage as well as hard copy storage.

Can you explain to me your photo organisation strategies?? I need some inspiration. Any decent online photo storage sites or something??

Also how do you organise them?! By month? Event?

I have OneDrive app - set it to upload photos - they upload into same folder which I then move into sub folders by date/event
At the end of the year I run through them and add them to an album in OneDrive (only the good ones) then turn them into a photobook via photo box or bonusprint

Ladydepp · 26/02/2018 22:50

I feel your pain. I have even more than 3000.

I make photo calendars every year for grandparents and I make photo books for us by year, with separate ones for special holidays. Sounds great, but I’m 4 years behind. Separate printed photos get stuck into relevant photo book. I use Photobox or Bonusprint.

Mine are stored on Cloud and external hard drive (hopefully).

AlwaysOldBeforeMyTime · 26/02/2018 22:50

I'd love an online storage tool but am too cheap to pay for one!

I store mine on the laptop/usb sticks and do an annual photo album or book every year with notes about where we went etc. Don't know why I bother as they never get looked at again but I'd feel bad if I didn't carry on now!

Worldsworstcook · 26/02/2018 22:52

What phone do you have? We have free online Apple storage, or rather had as it now has 20,000 photos so is 79p a month in iCloud storage fees.

GinnyLovesGin · 26/02/2018 22:53

It’s an iPhone 7. I don’t understand the cloud. Does anyone understand the cloud?!

It's a pain to keep them organised but sooo worth it when I'm looking for a photo from a couple of years ago

Plus having the app on my phone is so much easier

Most of my photos are backed up on Flickr and pretty much all of them are backed on Google. They're not in folders as it's easy enough to look through or search them by date.

I have some printed and in albums and need to get round to doing that again with the best ones.

Davros · 26/02/2018 22:55

Photo books

Worldsworstcook · 26/02/2018 22:57

I'll ask DH. To me these things just happen like magic! A mysterious fairy does it for me!!

LoniceraJaponica · 26/02/2018 22:59

I'm really boring, and download photos from my phone and my camera on a regular basis. I have Photoshop and adjust them where necessary and then organise them by date. I rename them so that when I look at them in years to come I will know where they were taken and when. I have folders for each year and folders within for each month, and sometimes folders within the month if it is a holiday or specific event.

I enjoy sorting out my pictures so it isn't an onerous task.

www.apple.com/uk/icloud/

Any photo we take on our phone automatically gets saved up onto the cloud. Apparently it's easy to do if you follow this link!

frasier · 26/02/2018 23:07

Cloud is automatic Ginny (well, if you want it to be and don't want to do manual backups). Everything just gets backed up periodically without you doing a thing.

If your phone ever gets lost or stolen, you can control stuff from there too.

blueshoes · 26/02/2018 23:07

Watching with interest.

Those who use cloud, can others (like dh and dcs) upload onto the same 'cloud' account? Obviously only selected photos as they would want to keep some photos private. The idea is that somebody, most likely me, will then every 3 years when I get round to it print out hard copies on photobox or snapfish.

curious541 · 26/02/2018 23:09

Blue shoes - with OneDrive you can choose which folders to share with others Smile

frasier · 26/02/2018 23:15

I have a website, not facebook or a blog or anything, my own website which is basically a clickable front page going to my photos. As we have travelled A LOT with DC we have pics sorted into countries, and then into places in the UK because we move around a lot here also.

Suppose it's an online photo album really but it's a bit more fun.

TheSnowFairy · 26/02/2018 23:23

Sorry to hijack your thread op but I have uploaded photos to Amazon Prime Photos - but everything gets uploaded including screenshots...anyone got any ideas how to only upload photos?

onlyonaTuesday · 26/02/2018 23:27

We print a photo book of digital pictures every January, it's full of all our favourite pictures of the past year . Then just chuck it in the loft as I can't stand clutter Grin

lightoflaluna · 26/02/2018 23:29

I've got an external hard drive from my uni days, so periodically i'll empty my icloud and transfer them all onto that via my laptop.

I like the idea of an annual photobook.

Icloud seems to fill up so fast though. It's nagging me yet again that my storage is full and i havent backed up for yonks.

nottwins · 26/02/2018 23:51

I also store by year/special event on photobox and create an annual photobook (but am a few years behind still as I only decided to start last year and had a backlog of a decade!)

Question for the others that do this: how long does it take you?? Mine take hours and hours (maybe 25-30hrs/year?) as I am a complete perfectionist and have to have each double page spread looking like a work of art, as well as including all of the really lovely pics plus it needs to double as a sort of diary too. I'm thinking I might need to speed up my process a bit...

frasier · 26/02/2018 23:57

nottwins Took us so long that the free voucher we got for one in a baby pack which lasted 12 months was never used lol!

Ski40 · 26/02/2018 23:57

I use Dropbox. Everything is automatically uploaded to cloud storage and I have tons of folders. I pay a small monthly fee because I have more than 34,000 photos stored and I also back up all my non sensitive documents there. It's brilliant. X

Panda81 · 27/02/2018 00:02

Like a PP, I'm paying 79p a month for extra Apple storage as a back up for my phone. This is because ALL the baby photos are taken on my phone and I would be heartbroken if I lost any of them before I had chance to transfer to laptop/main storage.

So for main storage (all digital photos going back 14 years) I file on laptop and keep a backup copy on an external hard drive, although I only back up once a year which is nowhere near enough. I'm looking into something like Flickr to be able to store all on there and view easily, but they need a massive tidy up first.

In terms of organisation I used to do folders by year then subfolders by month but I found I wasn't really looking at pictures, or if I wanted something specific it would be hard to find if I couldn't remember the date. So literally this week I've started a new filing system by category.

Example folder names

Holidays abroad
Holidays UK
Weddings & Hen Dos
Pets
Concerts

Then within them are subfolders with date and description e.g. 2016 05 - Venice
(Putting year then month keeps the folders in date order)

Not entirely sure yet how I will file 1500plus pics of 6mo DS yet...

FreshHerbs · 27/02/2018 00:25

I print a batch from my phone (around 80-100 prints) to photo box or free prints every 3 months. When it arrives I stick a sticky label on the photo envelope with date/year on it and then place it in a big storage box on top of my wardrobe. I then delete them from my phone apart from the ones that I love and that's it.

Really wouldn't like to print 1000's off in one go as that would take for ages to upload to the sites I use
