To ask a fairly boring question about your photos

Yeah I have two very young kids and therefore have about 3000 photos on my phone. I wish I was exaggerating.

I occasionally send an order to Photobox to get a batch printed. I have some framed. The ones that aren’t framed are in a drawer. I have some on Facebook and Instagram.

There is no order to this chaos and I need a resolution for online photo storage as well as hard copy storage.

Can you explain to me your photo organisation strategies?? I need some inspiration. Any decent online photo storage sites or something??

I personally love Google Photos. Once your photos are in there they have a great (but kind of creepy) search box that allows you to type in just about anything to bring up photos relating to your search term, eg. "beach" or "cake". You can also set it up to recognise faces. The creepy part was that I told Google Photos that a certain face was my 19 year-old cousin and it managed to recognise and tag a photo of him at age 3 months.

They are automatically shown in chronological order and you can also create albums if you wish. If you want to search for photos from a specific day just type the date into the search box.

I've been backing up old scanned photos and sharing the folder with my siblings (who also have Gmail accounts) so they can add their own photos.

kaletogo · 27/02/2018 00:28

I forgot to mention that you can also search by location if you have your photo camera set to record the GPS location of each photo.

alpineibex · 27/02/2018 00:30

I just use Google Photos.

GrockleBocs · 27/02/2018 00:31

The cloud is in this case just backing a copy up to some space on some massive servers in a warehouse somewhere. These are maintained in a configuration that means your data is not stored on any one piece of hardware and should be safe.
Back your pictures up. To a Google drive, to an online image store, to the iCloud to a physical device such as USB.

I get a Freeprints Photobook every month. 20 pages so I pick my favourite 40 photos (that’s more than 1 a day!) and double up on a page. Costs £5.99 postage (so not really free), quite neat to store and easy to look at.

alpineibex · 27/02/2018 00:36

I'm so behind on printing photos though. But then, do I need to print them when I have them backed up online? Maybe I'll do a yearly photobook of all the best ones and keep the rest stored on Google

Cavender · 27/02/2018 00:40

I’m with Kale and Alpine Goggle Photos is fantastic.

moralminority · 27/02/2018 06:41

I pay £2.49 to Apple for the cloud but I also use amazon. It's free if you have amazon prime and my husband has the app also with my log in so he backs his up there so we have all our pics in one place. I did a photo album every year (used to buy a photobox credit but felt so under pressure each time it was running out that I stopped buying them! Not done one since, I need the pressure of a deadline!). I also back up to an external hard drive now and again.

poddige · 27/02/2018 09:48

@Cavender @kaletogo @alpineibex I've just downloaded and my whopping photo album is being uploaded (downloaded!?) - when someone said it recognised people's faces - will this option be available once all photos downloaded? It hasn't started splitting them into people yet - but It has done separate albums for dogs, lakes, posters, flowers and food!

HerbsAndStewedRabbit · 27/02/2018 09:53

I put all my favourites into a photo book every 6 months or so. This takes probably 5 or 6 evenings and that includes the time taking all the photos off my phone and organising them into monthly folders on my hard drive then deciding which ones to upload into photo box then creating the photo book. I love looking through them all and really enjoy doing it once I get into it.

blueshoes · 27/02/2018 12:19

Thanks, curious. Will check it out.

tortelliniforever · 27/02/2018 12:21

As for printing, every January I create a photo album for the past year on photobox and get it sent to us.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 27/02/2018 12:27

I have my stupid number of photos set to automatically download onto google photos and print my favourites to put into photo albums. Google saves them in date order x

alpineibex · 27/02/2018 12:52

Once all mine have uploaded to Google Photos, it gives you the option at the top to 'Free Up Space', which removes all photos backed-up to GP from your mobile device. I have about 60GB device storage on my phone, but all my photos were taking up half of it!! Blush

doze931 · 27/02/2018 12:53

we also do a photobook every january of the previous year

mehhh · 27/02/2018 12:55

Following for tips I have 4800 on my phone and I need some sort of organisation, I don't like iCloud (although I do have it-mostly because I don't have a clue how to use it), like you I send a big order off every so often but there are so many!!! My mum was always so organised with pictures and dated the backs with where we were etc, suppose there just weren't as many then so was easier... I have taken 11 picture of my dd so far today- I could do with deleting some I think 😂

DottyDotAgain · 27/02/2018 13:08

OK - really stupid question - how do I upload the photos on my iphone to google docs..? Confused

Dixiebell · 27/02/2018 13:09

I have iCloud BUT, as I understand it, if I delete anything from my phone, it will delete from iCloud too. This does not help my storage issues, I have about 6000 photos on my phone and am going to run out of space! I can’t seem to download to iPhoto on my Mac any more as it freezes halfway through. Takes hours and I never get anywhere with it. Zf

BrownTurkey · 27/02/2018 13:14

Download the Google photos app (you need a Gmail email address first) it will automatically upload all the photos from your phone and you can spend loads of time idly making collages like I do. It's free and unlimited.

DottyDotAgain · 27/02/2018 13:30

Brilliant! Thank you Grin

LadyKyliePonsonbyFarquhar · 27/02/2018 13:40

My photo organisation is total anarchy. I use my iPhone and iPad for taking photos. Some photos seem to be synchronised and copied on both devices but not all, I have loads of WhatsApp photos from other people, some are duplicated in camera roll or photo stream and it's totally confusing, to me anyway.

HeartCurrent · 27/02/2018 13:46

I had around 900 photos on my phone before I had kids. Now I have 2 sons the eldest is 4 and a half and I currently have 16,700 photos. Hahahahaha

RNBrie · 27/02/2018 13:52

Every month I download all my photos, delete the duplicates and rename them so they are in numerical order. I then back everything up on an external hard drive.

Once a year I make a photo book from Blurb - they are not the cheapest but their software is really easy to use and once you've uploaded your book they will keep it forever so if anything happens to one of the books I can reorder it easily.

Books all live on a shelf in the living room and we do look at them every now and again! I've just done the 2017 book and had 1,350 photos to choose from Grin I am totally anal about it having got myself into a total photo pickle a couple of years ago.

Bodicea · 27/02/2018 15:07

I have the cloud. I don’t understand it but dh does so it means all my photos are accessible from my phone.
I do photo box albums once every few years.
I have started doing Chatbooks. It’s a subscrition app. It sends you a little photo book from your favourites section on your phone, every 60 photos. You can do it from Facebook and Instagram if you prefer. You get three days to edit when you get to 60 each time. It’s quick and cheap. Photo box is such a faff. The quality is not amazing but at least I know I have a hardcopy record of all my fave pics.

kaletogo · 27/02/2018 20:04

@poddige Mine took a day or two before the faces started being recognised - I had a lot of photos. Google will bring up a prompt asking if you recognise a bunch of people Smile
