I look like a Generation Game sausage that has been overstuffed

My face is beacon red from wind burn

‘ You’ll be fine on a black run’ - I was scared shitless

Every woman looks super stylish as they swish their hair as they take their helmet off - mine is stuck in helmet shape - definitely no swishing

My toes feel like they have frostbite

The only upside is the cheese fondue & the excuse of needing to warm up so hot wine is perfectly acceptable at 10am

Ive never understood why people ski, sounds awful to me and so many people seem to end up breaking a bone.

Condolences OP. My DP has tried to twist my arm persuade me to go skiing but I've always refused, and your post vindicates me. I loathe both exercise and extreme cold, so hardly think it's the holiday for me.

The cheese fondue sounds ace though.

I don't want to ski tho', I've heard of too many people who've twisted their knees and other such nightmarish injuries. If you just go for a nice walk in the snow do you still qualify for fondue?

If you’ve never skied before and someone’s taken you on a black run they are twats. Enjoy the wine and fondue though!

The timing of ski holidays sucks a bit. A week is not enough to get to grips with it and feel on top of it. You need two weeks to start to really enjoy it.

I've been on 5 ski holidays now and I'm still scared shitless of black runs. Wouldn't go near them. A not too taxing red will do me nicely. Better still, a lovely scenic blue with some hot chocolate stops along the way.

And then get stuck into the booze and fondue.

Our family have very mixed views of skiing. Those that love it, really love it. Those that don’t would rather be anywhere else. I think the mountains are beautiful, I love Salzburg, Chamonix, the Alps and Pyrenees but from inside somewhere warm. Why one feels the need to hurtle down, I just don’t understand. However four of the children think skiing is close to ecstasy.
One in fairness prefers snowboarding but it all seems much the same to me. Luckily he gets to go through work and has even snowboarded in Antarctica.
Cheese fondue is delicious but I can’t see you need to ski first!

Well there naff all else to do in Jan or Feb!

I love skiing, or more usually in my case snowboarding. But stick the the pistes you’re comfortable with - black runs are no joke.

Having said that I hate lugging the skis/snowboard around, and ski boots are bloody uncomfortable. I also look shit in skiwear, and don’t like beer or Jaeger. The cheese fondue and bottomless bowls of fries make up for all things though Smile

I've been skiing 22 years and don't go on black runs that often. Whoever did that to you is a twat.

Get a buff - goes round your neck and you pull it up to cover your face. If it's actually cold get a balaclava. Really.

When I went for the day on Monday every person in the pub at lunchtime had balaclava hair Grin

I'm on a skiing holiday right now but I hate skiing. We go in an area (Allgau, Germany) where you can do more than Alpine skiing - there's also cross-country, snowshoe trails, hillwalking and skating. And the hotel has a nice pool and sauna. I do a bit of snowshoeing and then retire to the poolside. The worst thing IMO is if you are in some of those resorts in the French/Swiss Alps where there's like two hotels and then a cable car up to the actual ski area, and you're stuck on the piste basically all day and the only respite us to go for a hot chocolate in a massively overcrowded self service cafe left over from the 1970s.

I used to love skiing, sadly haven't been for years now.

But I agree with PPs who've said that whoever said you'd be OK on a black run is a total idiot - and they put you, and other skiers, in danger by making a novice go down a black run.

I agree, skiing is hideous. Massively expensive, getting up early each day, clunking around in those horrible boots.

Sadly everyone else in ththe family loves it and DS2 has started to get into ski racing, so it’s to going to go away. Luckily DH is a very good skier as is my FIL ,so they take the children.

Definitely not for me.

My husbNd skis loads... never broken a bone yet but did find himself going off piste over moguls only to find the weather was too bad to go up the ski lifts again (ski lifts - seriously! Fucking scary shit) snd had to get a taxi back around the other side of the mountain lol ... cost him about 60 quid and that was about 20 years ago lol

Lots of sun cream on the face, reapplied regularly -it acts as a good barrier against the wind.

Buffs are also good as is hot wine, fondue, and amazing scenery.

But don’t be pushed to do runs your are not comfortable with - not fun, not fair and not safe. Enjoy the rest of the holiday.

I have no idea why people go on a ski holidays the only thing that looks good is the scenery. But I make a rule of never going on holiday to a place which is not at least 10 degrees warmer than my house😁

You need to ski like I do. I help everyone get up and ready, wave them off at the door in their 15 layers of claustrophobic tight clothes carrying the most awkward bundle of skis and sticks and watch them walk to the slopes in minus 10 whilst in my pjs with a cup of coffee. Hot tub and book then off for a quite lunch with cocktails and book.

Bag the seating ready for them coming down the slopes for after skiing cocktails, watch the videos of them freezing their bits off and falling over, go for a nice half cut dinner, rinse and repeat. This is the best way to ski.

I have tried many times over the years, I hate it. It’s cold, your scrunched in a tonne of layer (the socks and boots is enough to make me cross) and it’s scary. I have tantrumed, cried, shouted and walked off mountains on several occasions. I actually am a very good skier for my level but it’s just horrible!

I used to wake in the night worrying for a fortnight before the holiday Confused & then lost what confidence I had after having DS

the worst was being taken down a black run on the first day of a holiday with colleagues of DH - the twat husband thought it would be hilarious to pretend it was a blue run until it was too late to do anything about it.

I was in tears with fright. DH was lovely & coaxed me down & really had a go at the other bloke who laughed like a drain Hmm

I went a couple of times after that but officially retired from skiing when I was 40 - bliss Grin DS was better than me by then & I was just holding him & DH back.

I agree. Skiiing is horrible.

Sweaty, scary, too hot and too cold at the same time. Chapped face and lips.
I have been two skiing holidays. Once in Scotland, once in the Italian Alps. Hated them.
