Go Skiing They Said ....

It will be fun they said

I look like a Generation Game sausage that has been overstuffed

My face is beacon red from wind burn

‘ You’ll be fine on a black run’ - I was scared shitless

Every woman looks super stylish as they swish their hair as they take their helmet off - mine is stuck in helmet shape - definitely no swishing

My toes feel like they have frostbite

The only upside is the cheese fondue & the excuse of needing to warm up so hot wine is perfectly acceptable at 10am

I've never been on a skiing holiday but I've eaten plenty of cheese fondue.

Yvest · 23/02/2018 07:46

I’ve been skiing once. DH is taking the children at Easter. I’m staying at home and I can’t wait

MadMags · 23/02/2018 07:47

What on earth were you doing on a black run if you’re new to it?!

Poor you. Sad

Quartz2208 · 23/02/2018 07:50

Been twice never again. It’s ok if it’s a wide run with no people but that never happens. And as for the hell that is ski lifts

k2p2k2tog · 23/02/2018 07:50

Have done it once and hated every minute. Not fun in the slightest.

Omgineedanamechange · 23/02/2018 07:51

Why, in the name of everything normal, would anyone want to spend their precious holidays, dressed like a toddler in a snowsuit, freezing their asses off, exerting themselves and literally risking life and limb is utterly beyond me.

Just as an aside I’m currently lounging beside a pool in Thailand. Its 33 degrees and I’m trying to decide between another cocktail in the shade, or another dip in the pool (nothing as taxing as swimming, thanks very much)

Maybe I’ll do both and go to the swim up bar. I’m aware this is probably not helping

SundayLunchHappy · 23/02/2018 07:52

Urgh, smelly everything after a long day, injuries, annoying people who seem to glide past like they’re Jesus on water.

The only way I will go skiing is if we go to a naiccce resort with lots of alternative activities for me whilst dh takes our offspring to partake in wacky races!

bigbluebus · 23/02/2018 07:53

Everytime someone tells me they're going on a skiing holiday my brain screams 'why, just why?' I can't think of many things i would enjoy less.
Fortunately both DH and DS share my feelings on this one so it never comes up for discussion.
Give me a holiday in the warm any day!

Notasunnybunny · 23/02/2018 07:53

What instructor takes a novice on a black run!?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 23/02/2018 07:54

I'll never be able to go skiing.
I'd just find myself thinking of Ned Flanders saying "Feels like I'm wearing nothing at all… nothing at all… nothing at all…"
I'd never cope.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2018 07:54
  1. Cold - why go on holiday somwewhere really cold?
  2. Sports - yuck
  3. Risky
  4. Very expensive.

Redcherries - you could do what you do somewhere warm!

Notasunnybunny · 23/02/2018 07:57

It also sounds like you aren’t being lucky with the weather, if the sun was warm and you could sit out in a t shirt drinking beer you’d feel better about the whole thing. This is why I don’t ski in feb, great quality snow but it can be very cold

Elocutioner · 23/02/2018 07:59

Ach you bunch of wet wipes!! :)

But I admit, if you start as an adult I can see why it might not appeal. My whole family is skiing mad and I love it! Swooshing down the slopes, getting a bit of exercise, hot wine, yummy lunches, beautiful mountains....

I've just started the kids off (aged 4 and 5) and they love it too.

If it's not your thing though, go somewhere where there's something else to do or stay somewhere with a pool and a sauna.... and stay well away from black runs!

Elocutioner · 23/02/2018 08:02

Also:

  1. It is not cold if you are dressed for the weather. It is actually quite warm in spring
  1. No one cares about helmet hair. Even in the naice resorts, the poseurs with the nice hair get laughed at by the proper skiers

I admit it is eye wateringly expensive though.

Notasunnybunny · 23/02/2018 08:02

My father started at 40 and no one is keener than him. I think if you have a bad first week then that can taint things forever.

YvonneGoolagongsDugongDoug · 23/02/2018 08:04

Best fun you can have with your clothes on. I won't ever be able to go again because I have pins in my pelvis. I am very sad about this.

Elocutioner · 23/02/2018 08:06

Actually my brother started at 7 and hated it. If it's not your thing then why push it?

Parents started in their 30s and still go at least one week a year now in their mid 60s.

FluffyWuffy100 · 23/02/2018 08:06

Either you’re a novice and should have been having lessons, or you’re not and you need to take personal responsibility and not go down a black run when you’re not comfortable.

Also - you don’t need to be cold if you dress appropriately. Get a buff for the face.

Of course you’re going to look shit until you get good. Beginner tennis players hardly look like Andy Murray do they?!

FluffyWuffy100 · 23/02/2018 08:07

And everyone knows skiing in feb half term is for amateurs and posers.

Go at Easter when it’s half the price and twice as nice.

MadMags · 23/02/2018 08:08

I love skiing!

It is expensive though...

GinGeum · 23/02/2018 08:09

DP and his family are skiing mad. MIL keeps telling me they are going to take us on a ski holiday so I can experience it. I can’t think of anything worse. I only ever want to go on holiday if it is somewhere significantly warmer than here!

We are ttc and I’m desperately hoping I’ll get pregnant soon so I’ll have a get out of jail free card Grin

Elocutioner · 23/02/2018 08:11

Haha Gin my brother's wife got brought on a skiing holiday by my family and spent the entire week in tears. We have been on summer holidays with them only since then :)

Poor girl!

Elocutioner · 23/02/2018 08:13

Half term in the three valleys - €4,50 for a hot chocolate, €3 for a coke,
€22 on the mountain for a sandwich and chips, average lunch for four people €80. And this was not in the naice places!

Troels · 23/02/2018 08:16

I went a couple of times when youger and loved it. No way I'd try it now. We drank a lot some sort of hot apple flavoured alcohol that was delicious. Dd is going at Easter. I have a feeling there will be a broken bone that week, probably hers. If she doesn't brake a bone very unlikely knowing her, chances are she'll want to go again.

user187656748 · 23/02/2018 08:16

I'm on a skiing holiday at the moment.

Everyone left an hour ago wrapped up warm and excited to go. I am sat on the balcony in glorious sunshine with free drinks, pastries and chocolate, MN and good book. I have a massage and a facial booked for later this afternoon.

This is our fifth skiing holiday. I learnt the way to do it after two holidays. The DC and DH are in their element. So am I, just in my own way.
