It will be fun they said

I look like a Generation Game sausage that has been overstuffed

My face is beacon red from wind burn

‘ You’ll be fine on a black run’ - I was scared shitless

Every woman looks super stylish as they swish their hair as they take their helmet off - mine is stuck in helmet shape - definitely no swishing

My toes feel like they have frostbite

The only upside is the cheese fondue & the excuse of needing to warm up so hot wine is perfectly acceptable at 10am

Most resorts have separate runs for sledging bobstersmum

Elocutioner · 24/02/2018 17:16

Harry I reckon that's about right. We go with a family friendly company, lift passes, ski school and nanny, plus spending. We go with three adults and a child and it's about that I'd say.

It's not 5 star but it's naice Smile

PanPanPanPing · 24/02/2018 17:36

For those who have castigated the OP for allowing herself to be taken down a black run, bear in mind she probably had absolutely no idea what it could be like.

I did post, earlier, saying that I thought whoever made her do it was an utter idiot. But given that idiot hadn't told her, it was hardly her fault for not knowing.

Hopefully the OP is now enjoying a more easy skiing experience at her level?

maddiemookins16mum · 24/02/2018 17:39

I went skiing ONCE. The worst bit was getting off the ski lift thingy without falling flat on my face. I was in Canada, my host family (I was a Nanny) said 'we'll try the nice, new Ski place up the road'. It was 1986.
It was only a place called Nakiska (or something), they'd not long finished it for the upcoming 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and it certainly wasn't the best starting point for a total novice (it was very scary, I think the Mom did it on purpose actually).

Harry, I go with adults out of school holidays which makes it considerably cheaper (and easier than lugging the kids and all their gear around!). We get the smallest place we can all fit into, usually self-catering (unless there's a good offer on) and go for not terribly glam resorts: we just want slopes and a couple of restaurants and somewhere to buy wine.

That costs us approx £700 each including this year, but we have a lot of our own gear - I hire skis on top cause my DH quite reasonably doesn't see where we'd store them and apparently 'propped up in the bedroom' isn't a good answer. If you had to hire add another £100-150 depending.

The real problem for first timers is that all the warm gear costs a bomb, but you can hire sallopettes and jackets or Mountain Warehouse do a good deal for the basics for around £120 usually.

So basically yes it's expensive but it doesn't need to be absolutely silly - I know younger, fitter, and more congenial people than me that get accommodation much further away from the slopes or go in hostels, which is a much cheaper way to manage. I would think if you sorted out your own transfers you could get much cheaper Ryanair type flights too.

This is why my children go on the school ski trip!

CruCru · 25/02/2018 03:20

On my second week of skiing, the guys I was with took me down a black run. It was bloody awful - I cried. It was 16 years ago and I still bear a grudge.

If the OP was anything like me, she had lessons in the morning and then went out with her friends in the afternoon. They will have consulted a piste map, taken her to the top of a chair lift and said “Right! Let’s go this way!”.

I still ski (and can go down most runs, including blacks) but I don’t think I would do that to anyone else.

sobeyondthehills · 25/02/2018 03:45

I love skiing, can't afford it anymore and even my sister fracturing her pelvis didn't put me off.

It did put her off, for some reason ;)

SuperBeagle · 25/02/2018 04:02

Can't relate. Grin

I've been skiing for as long as I could walk. Was born in the Mountains to parents who worked in the resorts.

I have taken after them and now work at my country's biggest ski resort, while my children are in a school which includes snow sports as part of its curriculum.

There's little I love more in life than skiing.

crazycanuck · 25/02/2018 04:26

I actually live in a ski resort so can’t really agree with the OP 😁
I do however get the bad helmet head and really redddened windburned skin. But I’m too busy grinning ear to ear with the sheer joy of it all that I don’t care 😁

Clandestino · 25/02/2018 05:10

I can honestly say that despite 3 ski trainings at all schools I attended (primary, secondary and uni) and regular trips to ski resorts I never managed the art of skiing. The moment I went faster I froze. I get you, OP. Look forward to the fondue Smile

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 25/02/2018 05:19

I moved to Canada 7 years ago. I’m just learning to ski at 44. At our local ski hill the transition from bunny hill to first blue was an eye opener.
We also have a house in the Rockies. I have driven past Nakiska but not skiid there yet.

Sparks46th · 01/03/2018 08:45

So, in the end, did you have a good time? (reviving a slightly old thread)

bluetongue · 01/03/2018 21:43

Love a skiing holiday but they can be frustrating. Where I currently am all but the lowest lifts were closed yesterday so I didn’t bother going out. Then it rained in the afternoon and evening and I had to go out to buy food.

This morning I’ve woken up to a blizzard. Loads of New snow but it’s coming down sideways! Looks like at least another morning staying in. At least I haven’t bought a multiple day lift pass and I have all my own gear so I’m not missing out there.

My first two days were amazing though!

YY bluetongue I think it's easy to love skiing on the perfect "fresh snow and sunshine" days but in reality it's not like that all that often!
