50 shades

witchofzog · 18/02/2018 13:20

I ❤ New York by Lindsey Kelk. It was shallow superficial nonsense full of cliches. It has good reviews on Amazon though and to be fair I would probably have enjoyed it more if I had been 20 rather than 30 when I read it

Glumglowworm · 18/02/2018 13:20

50 shades

I’ve read lots of fan fiction over the last 20 years, there’s far better stuff out there than 50 shades!

Didactylos · 18/02/2018 13:25

no idea but it had a tenuous plot, bad sex scenes and for some utterly inexplicable reason wereleopards

cardibach · 18/02/2018 13:26

Joey you aren’t taking about good/bad. You are talking about personal preference. OMaM is a brilliantly written gem - it may have been taught badly to you, or you may not have engaged with it, but it is not a bad book. For me, bad would mean derivative plot and clunky or ungrammatical writing (50 shades fits these criteria).
There is an interesting discussion to be had about how personal taste interacts with objective quality in the arts, and how we define quality, but that isn’t what you asked.

AdaColeman · 18/02/2018 13:26

Sarum by Edward Rutherfud, dull as ditch water.

Stoptherideiwannagetoff · 18/02/2018 13:27

50 shades...

cardibach · 18/02/2018 13:27

Oh, and I haven’t read a bad book all the way through wouldn’t/couldn’t waste my time. I’ve read extracts of 50 shades online which is why I feel qualified to comment.

PompholyxOfUnknownOrigin · 18/02/2018 13:27

The Alchemist by Paul Coelho. Pretentious shite.

Littlebelina · 18/02/2018 13:31

Labyrinth Kate Missed. Overlong pretentious shite trying to rip off the da Vinci code which wasn't a fantastic book to begin with

mycelialnetwork · 18/02/2018 13:32

The Magus by John Fowles. Most frustrating book I've ever read. I stayed up all night once getting to the end of it and I was so disappointed. All the build up and then....nothing. I felt really cheated.

(I know that's probably the whole point, but it left me feeling almost angry and unsettled. I wouldn't recommend it)

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 18/02/2018 13:32

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo it dragged on and on

The Alchemist agree it was so pretentious

Eat Pray Love another pretentious load of smug full of self importance twaddle had to skim read most of it it was painful

I love Of Mice and Men it’s one of my favorite books

Theaspidistraiswilting · 18/02/2018 13:33

Blanked most of it from my memory, emergency purchase at a non uk airport, the only book I could find in English and it featured a woman hell bent on vengeance against men and her vagina had teeth. ‘Twas awful and disturbing and fortunately I arrived wherever I was going and didn’t have to finish it.

Other than that is has to be Dan Brown’s Da Vinci code - it had amazing reviews but was just so badly written I couldn’t enjoy it.

Couchpotato3 · 18/02/2018 13:34

American Psycho. I know it's hailed as a classic by some, but I found it really disturbing and revolting. Rare for me not to finish a book, but this one was so bad, I threw it out. Didn't even want it in the house!

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 18/02/2018 13:35

One Day. Tedious, pointless nonsense with dull unlikable characters.

Ironic that a book with the central message "seize the day" wasted several hours of my life.

Camomila · 18/02/2018 13:35

I bought a book at the airport about a Vatican conspiracy to do with Vampires. I didn't finish it AND one of the characters seemed plagerised off a tv show. Tut.

Sarsparella · 18/02/2018 13:35

50 Shades but didn’t finish it

Me Before You is the worst pile of crap I’ve wasted my time on reading until the end

haba · 18/02/2018 13:36

Dune.
Urgh. Just about the only book I've not finished.

RedDogsBeg · 18/02/2018 13:38

The Great Gatsby, I utterly hate that book. I wrote a damning critique of it at school and the English teacher was shocked, gave me a good mark for it though.

MaidenMotherCrone · 18/02/2018 13:40

Something by Portia someone or other. Absolute drivel about a librarian. A short way into the book and the librarian had a wank in a public garden on her lunch break Hmm.The author mentioned her being a size 16, just like Marilyn Monroe, er no Marilyn was the equivalent of a modern day size 10. I didn't get any further but did email the author with my thoughts.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 18/02/2018 13:40

The miniaturist... Tbh it wasn't terrible but the fact that there is absolutely no need for, well, the miniaturist really ruined it for me.

Must admit its not the type of thing I'd normally read though, much prefer Clive cussler, Harlem coben etc

Asthenia · 18/02/2018 13:41

The Goldfinch. Oh god it was utterly dreadful!

Doublevodka · 18/02/2018 13:42

50 shades. The author is absolutely shite at writing.

Mulberry72 · 18/02/2018 13:42

50 Shades.

I got about 10 pages in, utter tripe.

loobywench · 18/02/2018 13:43
