And why

I would say mice and men , had to read it for my GCSEs , so boring

OP posts:
Witchend · 18/02/2018 14:08

Cider with Rosie.
All it did was convince he was rather nasty and shouldn't be celebrated.

Gilead · 18/02/2018 14:11

Agree with PP, a lot of these are about personal taste rather than bad writing. For example 50 shades, bad writing. The Magus, brilliant.
It's okay to not like a classic but you can't claim it as 'the worse book I've ever read' just because you don't like it. I can't stand most Dickens, but his books have a place. Anyway, different discussion.
My personal opinion is The Da Vinci Code and 50 Shades, although will admit to not having read either all the way through.

AdaColeman · 18/02/2018 14:12

YY to The Alchemist, pretentious garbage from page one.

PinkAvocado · 18/02/2018 14:13

The worst book (note the OP didn’t actually say a book that was ‘bad’) was by far 50 Shades. I hated it.

The only other book I didn’t finish was On the Road by Jack Kerouac.

KC225 · 18/02/2018 14:14

Another who couldn't read 50 shades. I gave up at page 70 by then he had grabbed her hand walking across a car and didn't offer to get her a muffin when he had got one for himself. What a rude tight arse - didn't get to read any of the sex. And I agree the writing was so clunky and laboured.

paganmolloy · 18/02/2018 14:22

Perhaps not the worst but worthy of mention for me was Clan of the Cave Bear and all the other books thereafter by Jean Auel. To be fair the first book was good and different but it started to go downhill around book 3 and the final book 6 was like a penance I had to endure where the main character basically wandered in and out of caves for three inches of book.

Snowysky20009 · 18/02/2018 14:25

Girl on the train. Have tried 6/7 times to read it but can't through more than a quarter of it.

gamerwidow · 18/02/2018 14:25

The girl with the dragon tattoo. No idea why it was so popular it read like a male wank fantasy all bad sex and long descriptions of IT equipment which will date it badly too.

gamerwidow · 18/02/2018 14:26

I finished girl on the train but it was hard work and not worth it so poorly written!

Commuterface · 18/02/2018 14:26

I’ve read quite a few bad books but one that sticks out as being really boring was The Lovely Bones. I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. It had great reviews though so maybe it’s me...

gamerwidow · 18/02/2018 14:28

Also whoever suggested The Great Gatsby is wrong wrong wrong. One of my favourite books, a joy to read.

Rinoachicken · 18/02/2018 14:28

The Dome by Stephen King.

Dragged oooonnnnn and oooonnnnnn, got readily more and more ridiculous and unbelievable until it became also comedic and had the most stupid needing I actually laughed out loud and threw the book down in disgust!

TroysMammy · 18/02/2018 14:28

Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha. Shite and no defined chapters.

Anything by Jane Austin. I had to read Emma for O'level. I have never had the urge to pick up her books and try again and have also boycotted tv and film adaptations.

Rinoachicken · 18/02/2018 14:28

Sorry for all the typos in that! My post was still better written than the Dome though!!

Arrowfanatic · 18/02/2018 14:29

50 Shades

Bloody awful book. The writer has no writing talent at all.

beluga425 · 18/02/2018 14:29

50 shades was so dreadful.
I only got it because of the shameless PR nonsense on here with bogus threads that went on about how raunchy it was and how much earth shattering sex reading it had resulted in.
That and The Information by Mysogynist Amis.

punkpuffin · 18/02/2018 14:30

I love Of Mice and Men & American psycho.

I hated Twilight but I wasn't the target audience!

I was also massively disappointed by the last hunger games book. Its like Suzanne Collins just gave up. I'm reading P.S I Love You at the moment and I'm not enjoying it.

UnimaginativeUsername · 18/02/2018 14:31

Sunset song. I was forced to read it for higher English. It was so unbelievably boring. The entire class hated it, and none of us used it for the exam.

Also Breaking Dawn. It was unbelievable Mary Sue drivel with an anticlimax. Easily the worst of the twilight books (and they’re all terrible).

Littlewhistle · 18/02/2018 14:32

Captain Corelli's Mandoline - tried 3 times but didn't get beyond page 100.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - got to page 19 and gave up.

I persisted with The Kite Runner but didn't get what all the fuss was about.

UnimaginativeUsername · 18/02/2018 14:32

I also hated gone girl and cloud atlas (but for very different reasons).

BakedBeans47 · 18/02/2018 14:35

50 shades of grey was appalling.

I also hated the Girl with all the gifts. Grim.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/02/2018 14:36

Another vote for American Psycho.
I normally plough through to see if it gets better but I just gave in. Often wonder if I should try again but this thread makes me think no

Jammycustard · 18/02/2018 14:38

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffengar. 🙄

FrancesHaHa · 18/02/2018 14:38

Another vote for The Da Vinci Code, so badly written.

The Kite Runner is another book that was poorly written, in fact I thought it was a badly done translation at first, but turns out it was written in English.

Bixg · 18/02/2018 14:48

50 Shades - didn't finish it
Wideacre by Philippa Gregory - massive disappointment and didn't finish it
Me Before You - finished that one but it was so tedious
