And why

I would say mice and men , had to read it for my GCSEs , so boring

OP posts:
OuchBollocks · 18/02/2018 16:13

cigars I tried, really tried, to read Moby Dick. I wanted to, I was motivated, I was bored.

callmekitten · 18/02/2018 16:16

"Heart of Darkness" I've re-read this several times to see what I'm missing but I can't find it. I've come to the conclusion that I'm not missing anything.
"Catcher in the Rye" Another one that I just don't get...have also re-read this one in an attempt to understand but no luck. This is my sister's favorite book.

I love "The Great Gatsby" but I think it is talking about a particularly American way of approaching life so don't know how well that translates for readers in other countries.

CanIhavedessertfirst · 18/02/2018 16:18

50 shades - didn't get any further than Chapter 2. Also, just finished reading The woman in the window, which did not live up to it's hype.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/02/2018 16:19

The Slap, and then another by him, Barracuda.
Fucking awful.

Moominfan · 18/02/2018 16:19

50 shades getting slated. Agree it's awful but to give it credit people who haven't read in years picked it up.

Not a fan of the alchemist massively over rated.

Gave up on room emma donogue. it's just misery porn. Read a few chapters and decided not for me.

Iq84 haruki murakami taught me if you don't like a book call it quits. Made it to the end took me months never got a better. Complete waste of a read

The girl on the landing alot of hype again. Not for me was awfully predictable and long winded.

CanIhavedessertfirst · 18/02/2018 16:20

@craigglen Behind closed doors? I found it so far fetched! BA Paris' second book was so much better.

wenchystrumpet · 18/02/2018 16:24

A Paulina Simmons novel, the writing was awful.
I've always been annoyed by Tim Winton's writing voice, but I think I might be the only one. Eat Pray Love made me die inside, and I was not equal to The Luminaries even though I thought it was amazing in theory.

@the Doggy Few, Christos Tsolkas is a gay man, so I don't think he is enticed by any young female fuckdolls. He does explore patriarchal attitudes through his characters.

Eenymeeny123 · 18/02/2018 16:31

Debt inheritance by proper winters, it was the most degrading book i have ever read.

Eenymeeny123 · 18/02/2018 16:31

Pepper not proper. Still awful though

ShutUpBaz · 18/02/2018 16:32

Another vote for 50 Shades.

I've never read such illiterate codswallop in my life.

Sallystyle · 18/02/2018 16:32

50 Shades- Couldn't finish it

The lovely Bones

x2boys · 18/02/2018 16:32

Yeah fifty shades of grey was terrible I couldn't get through it , it was o badly written and the Da Vinci code incredibly boring I did actually enjoy the time travellers wife and Gone girl , i used to love Martina Cole as an author but her books are utter tripe now and she just rehashes the some story again and again Hmm

wenchystrumpet · 18/02/2018 16:33

Any other Tim Winton non-believers out there?

user1495490253 · 18/02/2018 16:33

50 Shades without a doubt.

YouTheCat · 18/02/2018 16:36

The last Bridget Jones one was so awful that I gave up about 50 pages in.

I read the first page of 50 Shades and laughed at her repeated use of the same adjective. I would expect better from a 10 year old. Utter bilge!

Tess of the D'Urbevilles - just hated the female main character so much.

DwangelaForever · 18/02/2018 17:05

Small Bright Things by Scarlett Thomas. Waste of time 💩.

Genuine Fraud by E Lockhart. A rip off of the talented mr ripley and told backwards for novelty.

BroomstickOfLove · 18/02/2018 17:14

The Colour of her Panties by Piers Anthony. I read it at a party while drunk. The Da Vinci Code was also pretty dreadful. I loathed Captain Corelli's Mandolin so much that stopped after a couple of chapters, so I don't think I can claim to have read it. I also hated Cicero's Pro Milone when I studied it at school.

kierenthecommunity · 18/02/2018 17:15

The To Kill a Monkingbird sequel. The plot was super dull as literally nothing happened, the characters were all dickheads and the continuity! Since when was Tom Robinson acquitted? Or only had one arm? I wouldn’t mind so much but she’s only written two books so not a great ask to remember the odd fact about one of the main characters.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 18/02/2018 17:17

Wow, some of my favourite books on here - Heart of Darkness, Far From the Madding Crowd, Ulysses, The Goldfinch, all of Henry James ....

I'd second The Da Vinci Code. Horrible writing style. Haven't attempted 50 Shades.

alibongo5 · 18/02/2018 17:19

The miniaturist... Tbh it wasn't terrible but the fact that there is absolutely no need for, well, the miniaturist really ruined it for me.

Totally agree @Keepingupwiththejonesys - there was a decent book in there if the miniaturist wasn't making it all mystical. The family plot line was interesting but the miniaturist distracted unnecessarily from it.

gussyfinknottle · 18/02/2018 17:23

White Teeth- Zadie Smith. Some major historical inaccuracies at the start which made me think the author couldn't be bothered.

ladyratterley · 18/02/2018 17:25

Yes x100 to The Alchemist! What a waste of time. A very try hard, pretentious pile of drivel.

Littlebelina · 18/02/2018 17:34

Rylan I didn't hate "the particular sadness of lemon cake* but it does go down as one of the strangest books I have read. A chair to fucks sake. It did go to the charity shop

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 18/02/2018 17:34

Slugs by Shaun Hudson (I think?). It's about 6 inch killer slugs, with one tooth. Seriously. I only read it as someone said it was the worst book they ever read and I wanted to see if it was true. It was.

craigglen · 18/02/2018 17:35

@CanIhavedessertfirst - yes, it was Behind Closed Doors. I thought it was awful.

I hated Emma when I read it at school and have never read any Jane Austen since but I recognise it's probably a very good book, it's just not my thing.

I also didn't enjoy - and couldn't finish -

The Time Traveller's Wife
Love in the Time of Cholera
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
