FIL is an arse!

The half term project is the solar system. DS spent a lot of time researching and making a fantastic model to take in on Monday. It was sitting on the table proudly displayed to show the GPs who came today.

Did they show an interest and pride in their GS's work? Of course not. FIL has said it was "wrong" because there is no Pluto. FFS.

We've all told him. DH showed him the internet. But FIL doesn't care. Pluto according to him is a planet, the experts are wrong, the teacher is wrong and a ten year old's project is WRONG.

Pluto is a dwarf planet (since 2006) so shouldn’t be included, so there! DS knew this in nursery.

Would pulling him to one side and saying "it doesn't matter if you think it's wrong you've just really hurt DSs feelings" make any difference?

I know what you mean TheQueenOfWands. My BIL does! But this isn't that. This is a belligerent old man thinking he knows better and even when he was shown the evidence, still said that he was right,at the expense of a child.

MIL kept out of it for the most part and then later, alone in the kitchen, told me that FIL "does know what he's talking about you know". PAH!

God, my DF is like this. DS could do something that he's really proud of, we all tell him how well he's done, and my DF will say that it's not historically/geographically/literally/etc correct. Deflates DS in an instant, DH gets the rage and I get the urge to kick DF up his smart arse.

I really like Pluto but I'm not going to tell a 10 year old their project is wrong just because I like it. FIL sounds very childish.

DS was upset because his model was being dissed, he didn't think for one moment that FIL was right. FIL has always been an arse but I think this is the first time DS has really noticed.

I shall tell DH what you posted MadRainbow but I doubt it will do any good. I bet his attitude would be "School of hard knocks".

This is a cool book aimed at young children. My 6 year old DS loves it. Sounds like it’s at the right level for your FIL

If he is the "School of hard knocks" type and says so then perhaps a hard knock comment of "if you're going to make thoughtless and unkind remarks then perhaps DS shouldn't see you so frequently"

Yes, FIL is an arse. DCs will eventually come to this conclusion themselves though. I spent many years trying to 'protect' my kids from dissing relatives. However, at the end of the day (when they grow up) they will automatically make their mind up as to who they will visit, and who they won't. So justice will prevail!
