The half term project is the solar system. DS spent a lot of time researching and making a fantastic model to take in on Monday. It was sitting on the table proudly displayed to show the GPs who came today.

Did they show an interest and pride in their GS's work? Of course not. FIL has said it was "wrong" because there is no Pluto. FFS.

We've all told him. DH showed him the internet. But FIL doesn't care. Pluto according to him is a planet, the experts are wrong, the teacher is wrong and a ten year old's project is WRONG.

Not in this case. Pluto is too small to be a planet; it's orbit is in a different plane to all the other planets and it hasn't cleared its own orbit of other asteriods. There are other big asteroids out past Neptune of a similar size to Pluto, the only reason it got misclassified is because it's a long way away and really hard to see until better telescopes came along.

Personally I would just loudly tell your upset DS that we still love Grandad even though he doesn't understand things like Science and not its OK not to be good at something. I would definitely buy your FiL the book described above for his next birthday- you're never too old to learn.

I'm a DGM and I would have given your DS a huge hug, had a good, long look at his model, asked him lots of questions and told him how wonderful it was and how well he had made it.

If DH (DGF) had dared to make that sort of remark, he would have taken into the kitchen for a short, sharp conversation....

I know how this will play out. FIL will either go on and on and on about it because he finds an article that "proves" him right, or (more likely) he will never ever mention planets in our presence again but make a fool of himself down the pub trying to impress people with his newfound knowledge that Pluto is no longer a planet.

Twunt. He can go on about it as much as he likes its his decision to be an ignorant pig willfully uninformed however, he can keep those kind of things away from an impressionable child.

I don't care if it was meant to be the solar system and it ended up being a perfect map of America there is no reason whatsoever to be unkind, especially to a child
