To believe “wind the bobbin up” is inappropriate and to ask my child’s Nursery not to sing it.

Wind the bobbin up originated in the cotton mill towns of the north of England in Victorian times. As anyone who knows a bit about a bit history can tell you, the cotton mills were horrendous places which horrifically exploited women and children, forcing them to do dangerous work in appalling conditions for little pay.

How can it be right to trivialise these horrors by getting children to sing a light-hearted ditty about it... It’s offensive to the memory of all those who suffered these horrendous conditions and experienced serious injury or even death as a result of hideously exploitative working practices.

Oh god it's going to be stuck going round and round in my head for weeks now, thanks OP

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/01/2018 20:58

Go and look at the origins of classic Disney movies....

I8toys · 20/01/2018 20:58

I'm doing the motions right now......

Fekko · 20/01/2018 20:59

It should be banned because it does my head in!

Not because my great great grandmother had her scalp ripped off when she got her hair caught in a wool spinning machine when she was a child and worked darting under the machines to fix broken threads.

TheBlowersDaughter · 20/01/2018 20:59

You could always try the dinosaur version...

coconuttella · 20/01/2018 20:59

they should sing ring a ring of roses.

Of course not.... it trivialises appalling suffering and death. In the same way as saying “I’m not your slave” if your child expects you to run after you trivialises the real suffering of slavery.

I sing most of these songs in their sleep. Dd is almost 18 and is offended that head, shoulders, knees and toes points to her chin as she hates it x

Beeziekn33ze · 20/01/2018 21:01

One school had a serious complaint about hand gestures to Twinkle Twinkle because the children were, for 'diamond', making the sign language shape for 'vagina'!

lashy · 20/01/2018 21:01

Totally BU for all the aforementioned reasons...

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/01/2018 21:02

I don’t understand. What insufficiently lighthearted thread about slavery is this a reference to?

Cobwebdust · 20/01/2018 21:04

- jack and Jill is about 2 children being killed after all
I thought it was about the beheading of king Louis XVl and Marie Antoinette.

PeaceandQuiete · 20/01/2018 21:04

Is it 'Point to the floor or Point to the door'?

coconuttella · 20/01/2018 21:04

Is there any nursery rhyme or fairy story that isn’t offensive based on the strict criteria that historical events that caused great suffering can only be referred or alluded to in serious and factual manner.... now there’s a challenge!

Grin seriously?

CaoNiMa · 20/01/2018 21:05

I think we should ban Humpty Dumpty personally. It advocates a poor use of the army's time and resources. Sending all the king's horses and all the king's men to mend an egg with delusions of being human? Madness.

PeaceandQuiete · 20/01/2018 21:05

beezie - Who on earth's vagiona is shaped like that? Shock

Singlebutmarried · 20/01/2018 21:05

Are you the lady that wanted sleeping beauty banned??

PeaceandQuiete · 20/01/2018 21:06

Vagina even!

HonkyWonkWoman · 20/01/2018 21:06

Wind it up again Grin

PeaceandQuiete · 20/01/2018 21:07

oh dear i see you meant 'sign language sign'. Methinks its near my bedtime now.

Beeziekn33ze - I worked in a nursery and got into trouble for making that sign- I never realised!

Humpty Dumpty would call Claims Direct these days and sue the council for the dodgy wall.

Someone remind me about Oranges and Lemons?!?!? Doesnt that have a line about Off with your head? Chop chop your head or something? Im having memories off that at preschool!

thenettyprofessor · 20/01/2018 21:09

OP have a look at the labels in your clothes, are you 100% they were not made by modern slavery?

ForagingForFaerieGold · 20/01/2018 21:09

No no. Humpty IDENTIFIED as an egg. Really, he was a cantaloupe. Grin

And Baa baa rainbow sheep? Really?

coconuttella · 20/01/2018 21:09

What insufficiently lighthearted thread about slavery is this a reference to?

A thread about whether to complain about a teacher who said “you’re not in a concentration camp” to put their whinging in context. Slavery comments were included in this.
