To say dating sites don't randomly just appear in email junk boxes?

Or do they?

It was my understanding that emails may be sent from dating websites and end up in the Junk Mail section but only if the website has been accessed/viewed at some point?

I’m a bit disappointed in my spam folder now! I haven’t been offered a Russian woman since Friday. Someone thinks I’m diabetic, though, and someone else appears to think I have issues with batteries Grin

BertieBotts · 15/01/2018 21:02

Erm, yep, they do!

It's funny because I don't even live in the UK yet when I get these dodgy pop ups it's always "Beautiful ladies in YOURTOWN waiting for you!!" In perfect English apart from the town name! They all have very English/American sounding names, too, never German ones.

They get your location from your ISP. The only way to stop this is to use a VPN but it's not worth it for average browsing - it will slow you down and it opens you to more risk of spying from the VPN itself, especially most free ones.

I once had a wobble when I saw the number of dating sites in my husband's junk mail filter, but it lasted about 2 seconds. I have them too.

I don't get any spam on my main email account but I get loads in my old hotmail address which has been open for years.

Just had a look and it's all generic dating/hookup ones rather than specifically local but it might be they can't figure out that email's location since it's been used in different countries!

VQ1970 · 15/01/2018 23:19

I get all of the above and cheap Rolexes!

confusedlittleone · 16/01/2018 07:32

There's loads of local people in my area just waiting to meet me- and I've never used a dating site in this country!! My experience with proper dating site profiles is the emails get sent to your normal inbox not junk....

e1y1 · 16/01/2018 07:44

Would it be a strange coincidence though if all the girls that were being put forward as potential matches all come from the same County we live in?

No, thanks to location services on phones for everything from finding your nearest cash point, to driving directions, websites/google yada yada know exactly where we all are. Let’s face it, even if you’re the most scrupulous at unticking the share my info box, some will always slip through the net. Even to use some apps you have to allow it access to certain areas of your phone.

Your details at some point end up with marketers, (even if the only detail is your email address) and presto emails galore.

What Google has on everybody is scary, they know you better than your SO knows you. I previously worked for a phone company and we had some training on peoples “digital footprints” it was scary.

juliesaway · 16/01/2018 07:57

I have never been on a dating site in my life and I am regularly offered fuck buddies dates from people in my area.

CrazyExIngenue · 16/01/2018 08:31

Apparently single Muslim ladies are really interested in me.

Guavaf1sh · 16/01/2018 08:48

Haha Crazy! I get the Muslim singles sent to me too - I visited Turkey once but that’s my only connection to the Islamic world

c3pu · 16/01/2018 08:58

Since I installed an Adblocker none of the hot sexy girls in my area want to meet me anymore Sad

dingdongdigeridoo · 16/01/2018 08:59

I get mature singles, and also Asian girls.

But never mature Asians, which is what I'm really into.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/01/2018 09:11

*Is it a well-known site such as OKCupid, POF, Match, eHarmony etc?

If not it's almost certainly unsolicited spam.*

Even if it appears to be from a well known site it doesn't mean it's not spam. Fake emails that appear to be from legitimate sites are very, very common.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/01/2018 09:18

Veronica SexyGirl has sent me two private messages.

I thought Veronica SexyGirl only loved me. Hmm. That's the last time I send her the details of my bank account.

Whitecurrants I've had that too. It's kind of admirable that they've thought up a ploy that is so niche.

Goldenbug · 16/01/2018 09:22

I love the bit when they say they have females in Slough (Or wherever I live) eager to meet me, then only show lots of photos of Thai women with Thai names on beautiful sandy beaches. What pat of Slough are they from exactly?

NellyFrestelli · 16/01/2018 09:34

I'm more unsettled by the fact the op has never seen or heard of these type of emails filling up her junk mail! I thought everyone got them!

Hoppinggreen · 16/01/2018 09:35

I keep getting very interesting messages from Russian ladies and also quite a few local ladies.
I’m female by the way and have never used any kind of dating site

This is what I wrongly thought too,a couple of years ago. I was using my then DP's tablet as the battery on mine was flat. I casually had a nosey in his email inbox and found a couple of messages from women from some tacky dating site. I was so incensed I stormed into the bedroom where he was laying in bed watching TV and threw the tablet on the bed in a temper, demanding to know what was going on. And broke the screen on his tablet in the process. Blush. He pleaded his innocence (after a few choice words for breaking his tablet). Anyway, after speaking to my (adult) DD,she said it was quite common to get these sort of emails, and that she had had them on a few occasions,as had her DH. Well, how was I to know all this?!

Fekko · 16/01/2018 16:44

God yes. I’m often contacted by spam offering Asian or Russian babes. Not sure if they want me as a client or a babe.
