To say dating sites don't randomly just appear in email junk boxes?

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/01/2018 13:54

Or do they?

It was my understanding that emails may be sent from dating websites and end up in the Junk Mail section but only if the website has been accessed/viewed at some point?

OP posts:

I get them in my spam folder and they often say mention the area I live in too. I have never been on a dating website so I don't know how it happens.

Rebeccaslicker · 15/01/2018 14:13

Sounds like targeted advertising to me!

One of my best friends has been blissfully happy with her husband since they were 22 and has never used online dating. Yet Facebook announces regularly that she likes match.com - she's never ever been near it!

And someone somewhere in cyberspace really really thinks my junk folder is after a Russian bride, yet I can assure you I've never looked for one :)

DustyMaiden · 15/01/2018 14:13

My DH doesn’t get these messages but I do, usually after I have had an early night.

They are all from towns around us.

I had a theory that as DH was browsing the adult channels when I was in bed that, this was what was generating them.

I changed my sky email to his and he started getting the emails not me.

DearMrDilkington · 15/01/2018 14:14

I get pop ups a lot telling me about "horny lonely housewives" in my local city. I've never searched for any housewives.

I also get a lot of similar emails. It's a way to lure people on the website.

meandmytinfoilhat · 15/01/2018 14:16

I get emails about a lot of this sort of stuff. I've never been on a dating site or looked for a Russian bride.

RitaMills · 15/01/2018 14:16

Just checked my junk folder and it’s full of dating sites and fuck buddy requests, I can assure you I’ve never signed up to anything like that. Confused

tigerrun · 15/01/2018 14:20

I often get local 'busty' girls emails from 'nearby' who would be interested in meeting me. Also Russian brides and Nigerian Princes who are a bit short of cash but would like to give me a million pounds if I could just help them out for now.

Given that I am a skint middle aged mum who has been with her husband since before dating sites were invented I'm pretty sure it is just targeted advertising (area picked up on by a site visited that accessed your location sold with your email address to some marketing company that holds and sells the data to grubby websites).

If you are ferreting around in your partners junk box looking for problems (!) however I think you may have other issues that need addressing?

artisancraftbeer · 15/01/2018 14:21

I'm regularly contacted by hot young Russian women wanting my big penis.

How they know about it, I'm not sure... I didn't have one 20 minutes ago.

PinkHeart5914 · 15/01/2018 14:22

I have never online dated yet I get spam email from dating sites, I also get penis extension ones yet I do not have a penis, I also get emails offering me a Russian wife

Frequency · 15/01/2018 14:23

I also get them, along with the penis extension offers. I'd rather gouge my own eyeballs out with a rusty teaspoon than ever date again, so I have certainly not been Googling for dates.

KERALA1 · 15/01/2018 14:29

I have never been on a dating site. I trust dh and implicitly and actually he doesn't even use this computer even if he was living some double life (unlikely but never say never I guess). On looking in my junk for an email from a builder I had some surprising emails from hot local women wanting to meet me apparently. Didnt look like they wanted to join my book group...

Babyroobs · 15/01/2018 14:32

Our email gets a lot of these !

BoredOnMatLeave · 15/01/2018 14:34

I get loads of these, and for Viagra. Also get a lot of "local girls want to meet you". I'm a straight woman and have never searched for these things.

bellagood · 15/01/2018 14:35

Yep I get them a lot - and messages (SPAM!) on my FB.

HOT SINGLE MATURE WOMEN FROM COVENTRY WANTING TO MEET YOU NOW!

I live near Cov, but I am not into women!

But yeah, I get this kind of thing quite often.

I get emails offering me Viagra too!

I get updates about men wanting to meet me in Lancashire (I live in Ireland). I think it's from Match.com, or one of the well known sites. I had assumed that somebody had registered but accidentally given the wrong email.

Allthebestnamesareused · 15/01/2018 14:42

If you are on local town chat site etc in FB , use click and collect from local site, have groceries delivered from local supermarket they are target marketing for your local area. I get them in my spam folder. Never been on one ever

RandomDreams · 15/01/2018 14:42

It's spam and the women are not real so they are not really in such and such location.

dingdongdigeridoo · 15/01/2018 14:46

If someone gets your e-mail address and knows your rough location, they can spam you with 'local girls in X' location. It could be that they've bought your details from a third party, or it could be because your info has been stolen from another site. It's not a sign that someone has been searching for it.

I'd be interested to hear the backstory to this. Have you got other reasons to be suspicious? Have you confronted your partner?

LyraPotter · 15/01/2018 14:48

Not weird at all, I get them endlessly in my junk folder and I haven't been on a dating site in about 10 years. It's also not odd that they are in your area - websites like google know where you are by your IP address and they sell data to advertisers to enable them to target you effectively. Advertisers therefore know the area in which you live and send you emails relevant to that area.

Nousernameforme · 15/01/2018 14:48

i just checked my spam folder and i had loads in their neither myself or dp has ever been on an online dating thing of any kind

I just find it odd that all the girls that they put forward live within a 10 mile radius.

I googled the website but couldn't bring myself to look at it.*

Only way to tell is to log in, search your postcode area with a radius of 5 or 10 miles and see if DH - or an account that could be your DH - is on there.

Pickleypickles · 15/01/2018 15:00

Ive not been OLD in years but still get emails in my junk folder about people who live near me. I have realised (thanks to this thread) that although i havent been on in years i never actually deactivated my acxount so maybe that is all it is?

NotTheFordType · 15/01/2018 15:01

Is it a well-known site such as OKCupid, POF, Match, eHarmony etc?

If not it's almost certainly unsolicited spam.

MsWanaBanana · 15/01/2018 15:03

I get this all the time. Never been on a dating site in my life and no one else uses my iPad. Still manage to get loads of emails for local ladies available for sex near me!
