To really, really hate Toby Young

So, yes, I'm an academic and I think Toby Young was a crap choice for his new job (as does just about anybody who knows anything about it). But it has also just reminded me of the depth of my hatred for him - I think he is the person who I most hate in the world, which is unreasonable really, given he isn't actually a mass murderer or genocidal dictator. But... is it? IABU to think that Toby Young is the world's most odious twat?

Yes you are being UR I can think of plenty more who can claim that prize who actually persecute and torture people. Kim Jong for a start, mugabe etc etc etc.

whoareyoukidding · 04/01/2018 13:31

YANBU OP

scatterolight · 04/01/2018 13:34

I think he's alright and fairly inoffensive.

Surely there must be other people more deserving of opprobrium than a mildly conservative Heston Blumenthal lookalike?

KERALA1 · 04/01/2018 13:35

Yes is awful etc there are marginally worse than him (Trump and his cronies). Must admit his book "How to lose friends and alienate people" is actually pretty funny though read it ages ago.

SilverySurfer · 04/01/2018 14:05

I suggest you go and live in North Korea and then tell us how much you hate Toby Young.

MargaretCavendish · 04/01/2018 14:07

Ok, I obviously haven't mastered tone - obviously I don't actually think he's worse than Kim Jong Un, Mugabe, or indeed Trump - hence 'he isn't actually a mass murderer or genocidal dictator'. I also wouldn't describe any of those people as mildly as 'odious twats'.

However I do have a deep, abiding and passionate hatred for him, and think he's the worst of the 'bloody awful' rather than 'actually evil'.

Some Toby highlights:
That time he mocked wheelchair ramps in schools twitter.com/mikeysmith/status/947788816764604416

That time he praised Danny Boyle's wife 'big knockers' (it was actually his teenage daughter)

The time he told Claudia Winkleman to 'put some weight on girlie' because he thought her breasts were too small www.vice.com/en_uk/article/mbp3q3/toby-young-is-not-taking-this-very-well

The time that he admitted he only got his place at Oxford because his famous dad called them up (and I really don't think the son of an academic and leading political figure was a great candidate for an access place in the first place) www.spectator.co.uk/2008/09/status-anxiety-49/ - but he then complains that the current educational system isn't rigorous enough!

The time that he wrote about how hilarious it was that he'd once been reported under his employers' sexual harassment policy www.spectator.co.uk/2016/12/prepare-to-tiptoe-around-generation-snowflake-in-the-workplace/

Is it because he's a Tory?

Seen as he seems to have been sacked from every previous job perhaps he will be gone as quickly as he appeared.

MargaretCavendish · 04/01/2018 14:11

I always previously thought 'why do people put light-hearted? It's obviously a tongue in cheek post'. Now I know!

I don't think he'll last long.

To coin a phrase, he's a pretty toxic brand Grin and the Tories are probably going to realise pretty quickly that they would be doing themselves a favour by letting him disappear from view here. Which he'll do soon enough as - like everything he's ever done - he has minimal ability and little natural talent so won't bring anything to the job except unpleasant publicity.

TheBananaStand2 · 04/01/2018 14:13

Think we’ve been inundated by Tory HQ interlopers trying to pass as mumsnet regulars. Last night’s similar thread (interestingly outside business hours) raised hundreds of almost universally anti-Young threads from rightys, lefty’s, and others. There’s no way anyone can for real think this self-proclaimed toadmeister is innocuous, “fairly inoffensive,” or anything other than vile, scarily sexist, disablist, classist and totally unfit for the job of representing the interests of students (including young women, disabled people, and working class people) across the entire country. I just don’t buy it.

ReallyExhaustedLlama · 04/01/2018 14:14

I was just reading about his many deleted tweets and comments and I get where you’re coming from!

Moussemoose · 04/01/2018 14:14

The time he told Claudia Winkleman to 'put some weight on girlie' because he thought her breasts were too small

This, this, this ^

As well as all the other offensive, sexist shit and his half hearted "oh it's only political correctness that makes it offensive" pathetic apologies that aren't really apologies. This ^

Who the fuck does he think he is to comment on anyone?

And he's a Tory.

elisaveta · 04/01/2018 14:15

YANBU at all.
Have just seen a tweet, allegedly from his account, about him using loads of boxes of Kleenex when watching Children in Need, but not for crying.
His comments about working class children and children in wheelchairs are truly shocking. I don't understand how anyone wouldn't find him offensive tbh. OK he's not Kim Jong Un, but is that really what we're reduced to - thinking things are OK because we're not in North Korea?

GrockleBocs · 04/01/2018 14:16

Hates a strong word but I do dislike him a lot.

Is it because he's a Tory?

Hmm

What so the reasons Margaret gave for feeling TY is an odious twat aren't enough for you Kath?

TheBananaStand2 · 04/01/2018 14:17

Also, so you don’t think he’s as bad as Kim Jong-in. Doesn’t mean he’s not bad, doesn’t make him qualified for his post! What a low bar we set!

TheBananaStand2 · 04/01/2018 14:18

*Kim Jong-un

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 04/01/2018 14:18

Yup Odious Twat indeed. Unfortunately I have met him in the course of everyday life and cannot think of anyone less suited to comment on universities. An actual toad would be an improvement.

lollipop7 · 04/01/2018 14:19

He certainly is part of an exclusive repugnant club of twattery

All the members have these angry little misogynistic mouths that look like arseholes. Funny that

SeaWitchly · 04/01/2018 14:19

Oh, and yes it doesn't help that he's a Tory... defended publically on Twitter by his great mate [and fellow clown] Boris Johnson.

UpABitLate · 04/01/2018 14:21

"Have just seen a tweet, allegedly from his account, about him using loads of boxes of Kleenex when watching Children in Need, but not for crying."

Wanking? Erm, huh? Really? I mean that seems more than a bit weird.

UpABitLate · 04/01/2018 14:23

Oh and yes he's an arsewipe of the highest order, highly sexist and takes the piss out of a range of minority groups.

And he's a Tory.

What's to like?

DailyMailFuckOffNow · 04/01/2018 14:24

Bloody hell Confused

Creatureofthenight · 04/01/2018 14:24

Odious twat sums him up nicely. Seems obsessed with big boobs judging by his (probably now deleted) Twitter history.
