Restaurant chef boasts of serving meat to vegans

I'm not a vegan. I'm not even a vegetarian. But my DD2 is, and I hope she's not one of the diners involved. I think she's just single handedly destroyed her business. Fucking abysmal behaviour.

She didn't serve meat to vegans or vegetarians. On request of the group she put together a vegan friendly meal however one decided to order a cheese based pizza off the regular menu. I think the owner at worst is laughing at the fact the vegan ordered cheese for themselves.

www.shropshirestar.com/news/2018/01/02/probe-as-shifnal-carlini-chef-posts-about-giving-meat-to-vegans/ She was silly to post what she did, but to be fair I'd be pissed off if a vegan made a fuss about having a special menu, then ordered a dish with mozarella in it!

Mumof56 · 02/01/2018 23:58

The jibe came after Ms Goodman created a special vegan menu for a party, only for them to then choose to eat a cheese-based pizza, the restaurant said

She should have just served nut roast.

hahahaIdontgetit · 03/01/2018 00:00

Oh I understand she was irritated, but don't go on social media!

Phone a friend (does anyone do that anymore).

Nopeno · 03/01/2018 00:01

I was all ready to jump on her, despite hating the vocal vegan lobby as spiking food is just plain wrong.

But her comments and annoyance were totally justified! Demanding special treatment them eating cheese. Probably followed up by some emotive judgemental balls on Twitter Hmm

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/01/2018 00:07

So she deserves death threats for serving people what they ordered and the 'incident' not being reported with the full details?

SilenceIsBroken · 03/01/2018 00:08

The story doesn't say she served meat to vegans? It's only the headline.

I thought that the "went to bed assuming she's still a vegan" comment referred to them eating cheese but still calling themselves vegan?

Possibly an ill-judged comment, but she is only telling the truth - that the vegans are hypocritical for eating cheese!

MsDugong · 03/01/2018 00:13

I saw the original thread of messages and the separate one where she'd boasted about 'spiking' a vegan's food. Not once, when challenged did she say anything about this cheese pizza. Instead she continued to make jibes and digs about vegans

The co-owner seems to be massively backtracking and trying to cover their arses, due to the backlash.

Trueheart1 · 03/01/2018 00:17

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1490038/Ramsays-pizza-joke-outrages-vegetarians.html

Gordon Ramsey also did it, which was disgraceful.

JustVent · 03/01/2018 00:17

She said out right on social media that she did spike the persons food.

She then said about the person going to bed thinking they were still vegan.

She can deny doing it all she wants but no one is going to believe her.

She doesn’t deserve death threats but she was a total arsehole.

Birdsgottafly · 03/01/2018 00:18

Vegans are an easy target. If a chef commented that they objected to serving Halal meat to a group of Muslim who were drinking, there would be sackings.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/01/2018 00:21

I think what chef did was appalling,in service industry yiu serve & meet customer request
but the mob mentality of braying and arranging a demo is really wholly disproportionate response
Likely the business won’t recover, the professional and personal reputation is damaged
However as a business she’ll have invested savings, have employees. It’d be grim if that were lost over a stupid, wilful act

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 03/01/2018 00:22

I saw this story earlier. I'm amazed that a chef/owner would be so silly, posting the comments that she did.

No matter what her opinions on the group are/were, why on earth would someone do that to their own business?

Toucanet · 03/01/2018 00:28

She had previously posted "‘Pious, judgmental vegan (who I spent all day cooking for) has gone to bed, still believing she’s a vegan,’" - why would someone believe they were 'still' vegan - only if they had been assured that the menu was all-vegan (and if there was any cheese involved, I'm sure would have asked to be sure it was vegan. The cheese claim just sounds like backtracking to me; or maybe just that not every single member of the party were vegan).

Did the person who requested vegan option(s) be available actually act in a '‘Pious, judgmental" way either I wonder? Expect they probably just asked if the restaurant would be able to offer some vegan food!

The fact that she boasted that she'd - and presumably actually did, deliberately, "Spiked a vegan" is totally indefensible. Allergic reactions can kill or leave people permanently disabled, the request might have been through preference not allergy but how could she be sure of that? Complete contempt for her customers. Hope for peoples' safety that she never works in food again.

overnightangel · 03/01/2018 00:37

How do you know if someone’s a vegan?
They’ve already told you

Toucanet · 03/01/2018 00:39

What would the reaction be if she 'spiked' a Muslim's food with pork?

(Which from a health & safety perspective I think arguably less risky; I've never heard of anyone being allergic to pork anyway).

Either way it's a customer request based on their beliefs that she could have said 'sorry we're not able to provide that'. But she apparently agreed to cater then delighted in flouting? Gobsmacking arrogance and recklessness.

Toucanet · 03/01/2018 00:41

@overnightangel quite often not the case due to such reactions I think! Little choice for them to call and check before when eating out, especially if there is a dairy or egg allergy involved.

Butterymuffin · 03/01/2018 00:43

What an absolute idiot. Gerald Ratner moment I expect.

Whether IABU or not I don't care. I'm just relieved it wasn't dd2, as she refuses all animal products. Thank you for your replies and for treating me so gently.

FrivolouslyFancifulFannie · 03/01/2018 00:51

i think she meant the cheese pizza, not that she had spiked them with meat.

I worked in a traditional chip shop, vegetarians would come in and ask what they could have

nothing just a box of salad
what about a cheese pattie
its cooked in beef fat
so all i can have is salad or chips
just salad, the chips are cooked in beef fat
i will just have a bag of chips then
but they are not vegetarian as they are cooked in beef fat
i will just take the chips and forgot i asked/pretend i didn't ask

you would be amazed how many times this happened over 10 years

PositivelyPERF · 03/01/2018 00:54

You can get vegan cheese replacement and I'm wondering if she told the customer if it was vegan friendly?

Years ago I was out for Xmas dinner with work and another member of staff and I ordered a vegetarian meal. We both found a chunk of meat hidden in the middle of it. She was a boss and I was glad I wasn't on the receiving end of her temper that night. 😂

I used to go to a very nice restaurant with my husband when he was receiving chemo, as it was on the way home from hospital. He would have a fry and I'd order beans on toast. The beans came in a wee pot and when I got to the bottom there was a small piece of bacon right at the bottom, in the centre. The first time it happened I thought it was an accident, but found it odd as my dh didn't eat bacon, so there wasn't any on his plate. Same day, next week, EXACTLY the same thing happened. I didn't go apeshit but explained to the owner that in no way would I accept that this was an accident two weeks in a row. I could hear her yelling at the chef and the waitress, who was lovely, confirmed that he was a wanker, so she was delighted.

I don't trust chefs as some of them seem to have an irrational hatred of vegans. Thankfully there are now some wonderful vegan/vegetarian restaurants now.

PositivelyPERF · 03/01/2018 00:59

Yawn. 😴

To think she deserves everything she gets
Xihha · 03/01/2018 01:00

FrivolouslyFancifulFannie are all chip shop chips cooked in beef fat? is that why having bought a deep fat frier they still don't taste the same?

Toucanet · 03/01/2018 01:02

@LipstickHandbagCoffee not so disproportionate considering someone could have become seriously ill as a result of her 'spiking' though. This shouldn't be allowed to happen again - and deliberately! (Which you'd think a competent chef would be mindful of wouldn't you).

Did you see those photos/video a few months back of that poor woman left paralysed after being assured that there were no nuts in her curry? And a chef was jailed not so long ago after knowingly using groundnuts which killed a man. Maybe dairy/egg allergies don't tend to be so life-threatening as nuts but they can still cause anaphylaxis.
