Restaurant chef boasts of serving meat to vegans

I'm not a vegan. I'm not even a vegetarian. But my DD2 is, and I hope she's not one of the diners involved. I think she's just single handedly destroyed her business. Fucking abysmal behaviour.

Xihha

no some do vegetable oil so just ask before you order, its normally the traditional ones which use beef fat. I have worked in other's which offer loads of veggie options cooked in oil with no meat having been cooked in that oil so no contamination either

ObscuredbyFog · 03/01/2018 01:05

i will just take the chips and forgot i asked/pretend i didn't ask

It's because they aren't really vegetarian.

Oh, they may pay lip service to it, but when it comes down to it, they cave. It's a real disservice to genuine vegetarians.

I am veggie, I can taste beef fat, suet or meat stock in soups and sauces.
Can't taste rennet in cheese though, gelatine gives things a weird texture to me.
I'd never eat any of it willingly. If someone said there was a minor meat product in the food I was offered, I'd not eat it even if I couldn't taste it.

FrivolouslyFancifulFannie · 03/01/2018 01:06

you can put beef fat in your deep fat fryer

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/01/2018 01:12

I’m in no way excusing the chef,it’s irresponsible and potentially harmful
However, the mob mentality of y’all get a torch march on over, protest outside her business
Death threats That’s all wholly disproportionate. She’s reportedly suicudal
likelihood is the business is irreparably damaged by this. It’s all over internet

Toucanet · 03/01/2018 01:24

@PositivelyPERF good pic. So sad/pathetic that people like this woman still get upset/like to poke fun at (some) other peoples' dietary choices.

@FrivolouslyFancifulFannie on the one hand that's shocking. On the other i believe some people will occasionally take the attitude that they do what they can but if they've not been able to get anything else in the day and they want to join their friends not be the odd one out being poked fun at for eating a lettuce leaf (depending on their circle of friends)! then eating chips like that and being 99% veggie is better than being say 0% veggie. Ok not 0% hardly anyone lives on meat alone but you know what I mean. Though obviously there comes a point when doing that once too often would mean they should drop the veggie claim and just call themselves flexitarian if they want a label!

@Xihha no, lots use vegetable oil. But a separate issue people may want to check is whether the same vegetable oil has been used to fry non-veggie/vegan stuff in. No true veggie let alone vegan would want to eat food cooked in beef fat I'm sure. But what if they're in oil but not a separate fryer? E.g. chips cooked in vegetable oil at the other end of the same fryer to where the fish is being cooked?

People just need to make their own choices re what's acceptable to them.

Toucanet · 03/01/2018 01:40

@LipstickHandbagCoffee suicidal? Someone who not only 'spiked' but boasted on social media about doing so gives the impression of being quite a robust character. At least she didn't kill someone else. Hopefully she has realised that she could have done and has some genuine remorse for whatever her spiking involved/would never be so reckless again, not just remorse for her boasting.

Should someone like that be allowed to work in food though? Sure enough the other kitchen staff etc shouldn't suffer for her actions but if they do it's 100% her who's responsible.

FrivolouslyFancifulFannie · 03/01/2018 01:51

Plenty also refused the food as well i should say and yes mostly they were with friends ordering so possibly don't want to be the one left out with nothing to eat so on this occasion they will order

Maybe worth checking though before hand as a lot of people might think they use oil when it's beef fat, also checking what pans are used, smaller chip shops might have a problem avoiding cross contamination if the have less pans to cook in

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/01/2018 01:52

Apparently when posted she was drunk, tired, worked a 75+Hour week
So it’s a uk and international story, she’s received death threats, her photo is online
She may have been all bigged up when posting but I suspect the enormity has now hit her
she was v wrong to do this. And no death threats aren’t appropriate.

spatchcock · 03/01/2018 01:55

The mob mentality of modern internet shaming frightens me. I find comments like "she deserves everything she gets" regarding a woman who has received death threats more disturbing than the vegan-eating-cheese aspect of this story.

Margaritaanyone89 · 03/01/2018 01:56

By her Facebook posts, she's implied she's spiked the food. She also called another woman a cunt when she wrote it wasn't fair to spike the food. Of course she would try to back track now given the backlash she got.

I hope her restaurant shuts down, she appears to be a very deluded, self-entitled, malicious person. I wouldn't want her touching any of my food when she feels like it's her place to tamper with it depending on what irrational mood swing she was in that day.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/01/2018 01:58

Yes.im uncomfortable with the mob, demonstration outside restaurants, death threat
She’s wholly in the wrong.as a chef in service industry you meet customer request
Chef shouldn’t wilfully tamper with food or publicly berate customers

Me too, it's frightening how people leap on the bandwaggon of say one tweet without investigating or waiting to see if there's a backstory. It's the speed with which it happens and the sheer numbers of people involved.

And to think she could have kept her twitchy fingers off the keyboard and none of that would have happened, Lipstick.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/01/2018 02:16

I completely agree mathanxiety

LaContessaDiPlump · 03/01/2018 02:19

Vegan here. It sounds like she tried to cater to so-called vegans, who then decided to order cheese. I have a 'friend' who claims to be veggie but always turns down my food (when visiting us) in favour of a bit of her boyfriend's steak Hmm so I feel like I can sympathise with the chef tbh!

The online mob mentality is brutal.

LaContessaDiPlump · 03/01/2018 02:21

Just remembered the 'spiked' post.... actually that one might be deliberate (and unjustified)!

Redglitter · 03/01/2018 02:25

Not sure I buy the pizza story. It sounds like an attempt at damage limitation by her partner. She clearly posted she had spiked their food. That sounds very different to serving them a cheese pizza.

One way or the other shes not half shot herself in the foot business wise. I wonder if the restaurant will survive this.

The death threats are shocking though.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/01/2018 02:30

I don’t think the business will be able to trade under existing name
Professional and personal reputation is damaged by this,it’s all over internet
Death threats are shocking, and I’d suggest she keep any evidence and report to police

DidIDoTheWrongThing · 03/01/2018 02:51

What would the reaction be if she 'spiked' a Muslim's food with pork?

You would assume that a vegan would know that mozzarella cheese is not vegan.

The equivalent would be a Muslim ordering a bacon cheeseburger.

Is it really then up to the chef to point out that there is pork in the dish?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 03/01/2018 03:38

I can see why anyone would be frustrated if they'd spend time and effort creating a different-than-normal menu for a group of people with a specialised diet. I can see that they'd be a bit pissed off if those people then requested something outside of that specialised diet, because then clearly either their principles or their reactions aren't that strong.

I can even see why someone would post on social media, venting their frustrations and exposing the illogical/irrational/fussy/hypocritical/attention-seeking or whatever you want to call it behaviour.

This would all be ok if it was just the mozzarella on pizza.

If, however, she DID actually spike a vegan's food with meat, then that's really not on. Same as the chef who put bacon in a PP's beans. That's dishonest, disrespectful and very stupid.

As an aside, it IS possible to have an allergy to meat - apparently it can be brought on by a certain type of tick bite as well. So not all vegetarian/vegans are this way out of choice (although most would be).

But the hyper social media reaction is just ridiculous. Gerald Ratner moment for her, probably - but she in no way deserves threats of physical violence or intimidaton.

froginapond · 03/01/2018 04:20

Pretty vile. Hope she gets closed down.

JustVent · 03/01/2018 10:22

Thumbwitches it’s more likely that she was spiked with dairy. And dairy allergies are much more common than meat allergies.

Cantuccit · 03/01/2018 10:28

Whether IABU or not I don't care. I'm just relieved it wasn't dd2, as she refuses all animal products. Thank you for your replies and for treating me so gently.

Well you could at least acknowledge you are BU now you know the full facts?

Saying you don't care if you're BU is unreasonable.

You're contributing to the downfall of this woman's restaurant.
