Gu used to make absolutely amazing cartons of thick hot chocolate (the salted caramel stuff was incredible) but they discontinued it.

Each year I make up the Jamie Oliver recipe - I remember seeing him make it and it was thick and amazing. Mine NEVER comes out like that and have you ever tried to grate a bar of chocolate? Messy and a massive pain in the arse.

I'm yet to find a really good hot chocolate and it's become a mission. I find they're either really thin and too sweet or really bitter.

What are your favourites? Hot chocolate and waffles on Christmas Eve is essential in my house. Would love premade cartons but anything really!

Following with interest, I too loved the gu ones and I tied to make Jamie’s one once, tasted good but the mess wasn’t worth it.

HuskyMcClusky · 13/12/2017 18:56

What about the Lindt stuff in the round blue tin?

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 13/12/2017 18:58

Hotel chocolat caramel hot choc is divine.

ProzacAndWinePlease · 13/12/2017 18:58

I've got some Montezuma hot chocolate at the moment, that I love. It comes as little chunks of chocolate, that you slowly melt in milk. No need for grating. I do put more in than they recommend though, as I like mine thick.

PinkHeart5914 · 13/12/2017 18:58

You don’t need to grate the chocolate. A saucepan with broken up chcolate, cream and milk is all you need to do tastes great especially topped with whipped cream and marshmallows

whittards hot chcolate is good

Twinnings Swiss hot chcolate ( make with full fat milk)

The clipper one is really nice

OuchBollocks · 13/12/2017 18:59

I know you mean to make at home, but the Lindt hot chocolate in Costa is really really good. Thick, chocolatey, not overly sweet.

ParadiseLaundry · 13/12/2017 18:59

I just made the Jamie Oliver one today (you are right about messy chocolate grating!) and I was a little underwhelmed to be honest, it did come out quite thick though. Watching with interest!

BBC method no grating! www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1092/deluxe-hot-chocolate-with-marshmallows

Like pinkheart says, just milk cream and broken up chocolate (milk, dark, whatever you prefer) in a pan. Add a little bit of corn flour if you want it really thick and dippable like Spanish hot chocolate.

Claireshh · 13/12/2017 19:03

Paul A Young’s is amazing.

TammySwansonTwo · 13/12/2017 19:03

Last year I chilled the chocolate and then blitzed it in the food processor. Didn't make much difference and was much quicker and less messy. I still don't love it though!

Thanks for the suggestions, will try them all!

Try Cameo classic ciobar available at Amazon (sorry, don't know how to link it). In my opinion the best thick hot chocolate - and easy, just add milk and stir.

Noofly · 13/12/2017 19:09

Melt a few Lindt d’Or in your hot chocolate.

DesignedForLife · 13/12/2017 19:23

Caotina (Swiss brand) is lovely. But I can't justify the import cost right now.

I love Suchard instant hot chocolate

EB123 · 13/12/2017 19:33

Whittled white hot chocolate is my favourite. So gorgeous.

EB123 · 13/12/2017 19:34

Whittard white hot chocolate is my favourite.

Chathamhouserules · 13/12/2017 19:36

Add lots of cream, along with milk, to green and blacks hot choc.

GrandDesespoir · 13/12/2017 19:38

You can buy cartons of ready-made hot chocolate from branches of Paul (French patisserie/boulangerie).

StickThatInYourPipe · 13/12/2017 19:39

I keep seeing on fb a recipe for slow cooker hot choc. Maybe try that? Looks amazing!

BertieBotts · 13/12/2017 19:39

Green and Blacks is my favourite. You've got to make it up with milk but you can do this one in the microwave.

Or literally hot milk, cocoa powder and sugar. Old school, but it works.

MipMipMip · 13/12/2017 19:39

For pure taste (not thick) the options honeycomb one is good made with milk. Would love a thick one though.

Spanish Hot Chocolate is the best by far. You can stand your spoon in it or make it thinner.
