Gu used to make absolutely amazing cartons of thick hot chocolate (the salted caramel stuff was incredible) but they discontinued it.

Each year I make up the Jamie Oliver recipe - I remember seeing him make it and it was thick and amazing. Mine NEVER comes out like that and have you ever tried to grate a bar of chocolate? Messy and a massive pain in the arse.

I'm yet to find a really good hot chocolate and it's become a mission. I find they're either really thin and too sweet or really bitter.

What are your favourites? Hot chocolate and waffles on Christmas Eve is essential in my house. Would love premade cartons but anything really!

The Paul hot chocolate can be ordered online here

Allthetuppences · 13/12/2017 22:00

Tesco sell chocolate beads to melt into milk, so a lot less effort than grating chocolate. I forget the brand. A bit too sweet for me as a chocolate but ok if you like milk chocolate.

bert3400 · 13/12/2017 22:02

I had the co-op fair trade hot chocolate ...it was delious , but was probably helped by the massive glug of Bailey's in it 😁

Doobydoo · 13/12/2017 22:05

Whittards White here!

icelollycraving · 13/12/2017 22:06

I like the whittards one that is like grated chocolate. I think it's a mix of different chocolates, I use it to make the hot chocolate and then use it for sprinkles too. Think it was about £12 for a tub but does last a long time.

Second CrabbitArse's vote for Cocoa Mountain, they're about 45 miles along the coast from me and it's worth the drive out to their cafe if I want a treat! www.cocoamountain.co.uk/products/27150/the-best-hot-chocolate

TammySwansonTwo · 13/12/2017 22:31

Oh dear, I have opened the floodgates now just off to spend a fortune on every type of hot chocolate

Green and Blacks-its the only one that isn't sickly sweet. Add double the quantity of milk you are planning on drinking and let it boil out on a low heat until you have the desired amount. Alternatively, if you don't like it too milky you may like chocolat charbonel-this has a thicker consistency if you use enough. Make it with just water first then add warm milk.

RochelleGoyle · 13/12/2017 23:02

Clipper and Twinnings both do lovely ones. Not particularly thick though.

Beetie1 · 13/12/2017 23:09

I vote for this one....

I always buy the San Cristobal hot chocolate powder made by Cafedirect. Milk and a microwave is all you need and it’s delicious! Available in most larger supermarkets.

calzone · 13/12/2017 23:20

Dh is Italian and his friend sends us packages of the thick dark hot chocolate.

English hot choc has no comparison.

AbsentmindedWoman · 13/12/2017 23:53

Thank you OP - this thread reminded me I had a tin of Charbonnel Walker in the cupboard I'd forgotten all about! It's moved house with me twice this year!

Just had a cup of it now before bed, I totally recommend it Smile You just make it with boiling water, it says to add hot milk but I use a drop of cold and it's very good.

Will definitely try adding cream instead of milk for thickness.

If you like a thick hot chocolate, this is the one for you!

Cocoa + dark brown soft sugar/molasses + milk. The dark sugar gives a richness of flavour that's otherwise missing.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 14/12/2017 00:32

I'm pretty sure this is my favourite ever Mumsnet thread 😍😍😍

Simon Coll Spanish drinking chocolate - www.rosieleatea.co.uk/products/simon-coll-spanish-drinking-chocolate

It’s amazing!

Taytotots · 14/12/2017 00:46

Make it with cocoa and condensed milk - something like this cooktoria.com/recipe/hot-chocolate-condensed-milk/.

ScrambledSmegs · 14/12/2017 00:48

I like the one on Smitten Kitchen, but I reduce the sugar content a touch and up the chocolate. It’s a good recipe and can take a little mucking about.

DS insists that Galaxy Ultimate is the best of the instants. I am allergic and even the smell of chocolate makes me feel sick, so I have never tried making my own version for DS. I do feel guilty because he loves a hot choc (especially with Baileys).

BlackEyedKid · 14/12/2017 00:52

I make mine with Cadbury hot choc powder and add a tsp of cocoa powder as well.

Georgian hot chocolate… I had a version of this at the Gainsborough Spa in Bath and it was heaven in a (very tiny) cup.

Georgian Hot Chocolate
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
20g good-quality cocoa powder
225ml milk
60g good-quality dark chocolate, chopped
⅛ tsp ground cinnamon
⅛ tsp ground allspice
⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
1 small star anise
muscovado sugar
METHOD
Mix the cocoa powder to a paste with a little of the milk, then blend with the remaining milk, add to a small saucepan, and set over a low heat.
When warm, stir in the chocolate. Keep stirring until the mixture is fully melted. Add the spices and cook for 2-3 minutes to infuse the flavours.
Taste for spice intensity, removing the star anise when it suits your palate. Whisk with an electric hand blender for a minute or so until the mixture is frothy.
Add sugar to taste.
Pour into small, pretty cups and serve.

monkeysee100 · 14/12/2017 06:43

Carluccio s did a tiny cup which was amazing. Not sure if you can buy it for home. Lindt sachets are pretty good.

I find Costa and most places too milky. Wetherspoons is vile. I'm sure they just squirted chocolate sauce into skimmed milk. The one and only time I had it, it was grey and scummy looking

Unescorted · 14/12/2017 06:51

For those of you who are grating and finely chopping chocolate just blitz it in a food processor. We keep a jar of it with the tea - made from the leftover melted chocolate from other cooking things.

ifigoup · 14/12/2017 06:59

You can also buy ready-made chocolate milk (Frijj is good and thick but the supermarket own brands are fine too) and warm it up in a saucepan or microwave.
