Neighbor complaint - people using his drive to turn

Sorry I can't add diagram.

So we live on the cul de sack with a turning area. Each house has a driveway. No one parks in the turning area as we have large driveways and there is in shot parking as well.

Since we moved in earlier this year for some reason people use our drive to turn rather than going to the end of the road and use the turning area. This was particularly annoying in the dark evening with car lights.

We got a new fence with automatic driveway gates added last week. This now means people can't use our drive to turn. Our next door neighbor came over yesterday to complain that people are now using his drive instead of ours. We told him there isn't anything we can do. We suggested he put up a sign saying no turning.

He has now posted a note through the door (even though I'm working from home) saying he will be complaining about us at tonight's residents meeting.Xmas Hmm. He thinks we should have discussed our fence/gate plans with neighbors before installing them as they now have to deal with what was our problem. We didn't need permission for the fence or gates.

Aibu to think that people turning on his drive isn't our problem?

Is the CF called Brian? I don’t know why but he sounds like he should be a Brian 🤔😄

Lovely update.

smeerf · 11/12/2017 19:59

This thread was so satisfying. I'm moving into a mews in the new year, I hope I have a residents' association, sounds just like Gilmore Girls!

SadTrombone · 11/12/2017 20:02

I love that you still brought it up even when he didn't.

Bravo OP! Hats off to you and your gates! Xmas GrinGrinXmas Grin

The poor man will be very confused. How did you manage to go to the meeting and say stuff without your husband? In his world this does not happen.

Mummyoflittledragon
I can’t imagine why anyone would object to someone turning in their drive when they weren’t using it

Firstly it’s rude. Secondly it’s lazy. Thirdly it wears the drive out quicker

Fourthly and mainly, there's a real risk that your children/your cars/you could get hit by an unexpected incoming vehicle.

WeatherwaxOrOgg · 11/12/2017 20:14

Well done though OP, it sounds like you really turned the tables on a quiet bully.

StealthNinjaMum · 11/12/2017 20:25

Welcome to mumsnet op! Very brave to post on AIBU, I have never done it after years on here. Seems unfair to not allow someone to put a diagram in a parking thread just because they're new.

If newbies could post pictures straight away we would be awash with cocks.

Rainbunny · 11/12/2017 20:32

Not the point of this thread of course but I'm curious, who are all these people driving down your road needing to turn? Are they residents of your street or guests of residents or just random strangers? For it to be such a problem it seems there is a lot of turning going on! If it's residents and/or their guests then surely a word could be sent to the residents not to do it?

Creature2017 · 11/12/2017 20:32

Sounds like the meeting went well and it would be a good idea to get involved inthe association. You are entitled to p ut up the fence and good for you for doing it. Your neighbour could do the same if he wanted (we are not allowed new fences where I live but you have no such restrictions). Also by being open about it and showing the note you have stopped him being able to twist things around.

If there is a proper turning area people should use that not drives.

diddl · 11/12/2017 20:38

Do they think that the turning area is extra parking??!!

Not speaking for OP but my MIL has a similar problem on her road. People not in the know think its like all the other little side streets in the area and try to use it as a cut through to avoid queues on the dual carriageway, except it's not. It's a cul-de-sac with a small turning point which stupid neighbours park on so there's a steady stream of people driving in, turning around and back out again.

If OP lives on a similar set up (not MIL street because there are no new shiny gates) then I can well believe this is a problem and annoying to boot.

Knittedfairies · 11/12/2017 20:45

Well you called his bluff and then some OP. Good update.

Andrewofgg · 11/12/2017 20:50

Nice one!

HarveySherlock · 11/12/2017 20:53

I think it's people who park on another street and want to face forward if you see what I mean. We would get about 2 or three of an evening during the week and the odd one at the weekend. The street next to us is flats so a choca with cars.

I've had an email from the Chair asking about my fence contractor so maybe I'll start a trend.
