Neighbor complaint - people using his drive to turn

Sorry I can't add diagram.

So we live on the cul de sack with a turning area. Each house has a driveway. No one parks in the turning area as we have large driveways and there is in shot parking as well.

Since we moved in earlier this year for some reason people use our drive to turn rather than going to the end of the road and use the turning area. This was particularly annoying in the dark evening with car lights.

We got a new fence with automatic driveway gates added last week. This now means people can't use our drive to turn. Our next door neighbor came over yesterday to complain that people are now using his drive instead of ours. We told him there isn't anything we can do. We suggested he put up a sign saying no turning.

He has now posted a note through the door (even though I'm working from home) saying he will be complaining about us at tonight's residents meeting.Xmas Hmm. He thinks we should have discussed our fence/gate plans with neighbors before installing them as they now have to deal with what was our problem. We didn't need permission for the fence or gates.

Aibu to think that people turning on his drive isn't our problem?

Let him complain away! Just nod and say you are fully aware how annoying it is to have your drive used by people turning around and say I can provide you with the details of our installer.

GrooovyLass · 11/12/2017 17:33

So he's going to complain about you finding a solution to your problem, not about the problem itself - as pp have said, he's batshit!

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 11/12/2017 17:39

Thank you AhhhhThatsBass.

Pearlsaringer · 11/12/2017 17:39

Calatonia depends on whether you contribute to the upkeep of the drive since you are adding to its wear and tear. I wouldn’t like anyone doing this, tbh.

welshweasel · 11/12/2017 17:42

Some people have way too much time on their hands!

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 11/12/2017 17:44

Someone upthread mentioned planning permission for high fences. It's if above 1m by a road/foorpath, 2m elsewhere. See here. Has a great diagram Wink.

Start using hisvdrive to park in since it’s too much effort to go and open and close your gates.

Sprinklestar · 11/12/2017 18:22

The meeting must be well underway by now!

metalmum15 · 11/12/2017 18:29

We used to get the bin lorry turning round on our drive until dh threatened to send the repair bill to the council as they were knackering the drive up.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 11/12/2017 18:29

You have a residents meeting for a cul-de-sac?

Givemeonereason · 11/12/2017 18:40

Ask him why he didn't get permission from you before buying/installing his car/curtains/flowerbeds etc

AlpacaLypse · 11/12/2017 18:44

Nothing like a CFN parking thread even if there isn't a diagram

KitKatCHA · 11/12/2017 18:45

Waiting for the update!

AtlanticWaves · 11/12/2017 18:48

I'm home.

So ahead of our wee meeting I decided to have a wee look at previous meeting minutes. It is a resident's association for all residents both bought houses and council houses. It is a bit of a Community Council wannabe. The issue of people turning in drives or my fence hasn't come up before.

I took a copy of our deeds (shows no issue with fencing), photos, copy of fence/gate spec to show it's 98cm from base to top and the note. It seems neighbor is the secretary of the group and he used we are concerned about the fence etc not I so it must be from the groupWink.

Went in, saw neighbor said hello, looking forward to discuss fence. He didn't say anything back. Sat down. Meeting started, bloody boring, lots of whinging about shite.

Neighbor doesn't mention fence. So at AOCB I stood up and explained about the note I got from neighbor on what I thought was on behalf of the group. Lots of puzzled faces. Said fence/gate is allowed/legal. Asked what the problem was. Chair asked to see note. Notes was passed around. A bit of muttering. Chair asked to keep note. I said ok as I have copies. Chair said this isn't something he was aware of and asked neighbor about it.

Apparently neighbor was acting on behalf of everyone else. Since we got our fence/gate turning has become a major problem. For him and others (although no one else said there was an issue for them), car's scaring elderly (everyone was in there 60s so not elderly). I asked why was it my problem, why should I have discussed it was the group. Neighbor said it was the proper thing to do.Hmm there was a bit of a discussion after that.

I must admit I had my poor lamb face on the whole time.

Conclusion - Chair says neighbor shouldn't have sent note as it's not my fault there is a issue. They need to monitor the problem to decide how best to proceed. I suggested removable ballards, i mentioned that you can get all sorts even animals like penguins Haloand offered to send suggestions and offered to send anyone details of fencing etc.

Meeting ended. I had wee chat with committee minus neighbor as I had never met most of them. I might start coming along, getting involved in my community.Grin

Neighbor gave me silent treatment when I said goodnight to him.

Ha amazing.
Did anyone mention the actual turning area?

SoozC · 11/12/2017 19:20

Success! Love how you innocently brought it up! Grin

WineAndTiramisu · 11/12/2017 19:21

Fab! I can imagine the sightly confused, innocent look on your face... I doubt he'll say anything else to you again now!
