To think this an odd choice of names?

I was joined on to a ‘mummy’ group on Facebook and lots of it is people posting pictures of their ‘gawjus bubs’ and asking advice. A woman posted pictures of her twin sons from their newborn photo shoot with the caption ‘my gorgeous boys Ronnie and Reggie’.

Now Aibu to think it’s really strange to give your sons the same names as the Kray twins? There were lots of comments along the lines of ‘After the Krays?? Love it!! So cute!!’

Lots of people seem to glamourise the Kray twins and think of them as ‘proper gangsters’ and think of them fondly for some reason. One of them stabbed someone in the face and neck with a carving knife and used to rape men; the other stalked his first wife after she left to the point that she killed herself (I know that is disputed).

Aibu to think it’s not an association you would want for your twin sons?

Wouldn’t be my first choice in names at all but least they’re not made up names, in this day and age you need to be thankful for small mercy’s!

All names are made up.

NineFortySixPM · 01/12/2017 15:35

Maybe I live in a cave, didn’t know Tom Hardy had been in a film about them or indeed that any recent film had been made!

But I stand by my original point on the grounds not everyone is a film buff so it’s still possible that people haven’t heard of the Krays

Queeniebed · 01/12/2017 15:43

I can only think they liked Tom Hardy

GrumpySausage · 01/12/2017 15:45

They've released the top 100'girls and boys names for 2017 this week on babycentre. Both Ronnie and Reggie have soared in popularity. Babycentre even did a separate paragraph about how 'gangsters names' are fashionable this year. Apparently violet has shot up too which they put down to that being the name of the Kray's Mum. Hmm

I also know an older set of twins called Ronnie and Reggie. This was before the film. I admit I pulled this face Confused in my head.

I remember a thread on here about someone wanting to name their daughter Eva and the family surname was Brown. They didnt get why this seemed quite inappropriate

brasty · 01/12/2017 15:47

I would just assume the parents are a bit thick.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 01/12/2017 15:47

There have been a few films about the krays over the years. Martin Kemp and his brother (Gary?) we’re in one in the 80’s.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 01/12/2017 15:49

It’s funny because I would never name my child after anyone famous in case the celeb turned out to be a wrong’un and here are people falling over themselves to deliberately name their children after criminals and rapists. Weirdos.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/12/2017 15:49

Eva Brown GrinGrinGrin

That's fantastic

tinysparklyshoes · 01/12/2017 15:50

Apparently violet has shot up too which they put down to that being the name of the Kray's Mum

I find that reasoning highly unlikely.

Willowthewasp · 01/12/2017 15:53

But all names are made up. Anyway a made up name ( I assume you mean one that has not been popular in the past) is better than being named after a murderer surely?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/12/2017 15:56

Violet is the name of the Dowager Duchess of Grantham from Downton Abbey, which might also have had an influence.

tinysparklyshoes · 01/12/2017 15:58

But all names are made up

Technically. But some are much more made up than others and you're being facetious.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 01/12/2017 15:59

Err no, they’re all made up.

tinysparklyshoes · 01/12/2017 16:00

Err no, they’re all made up

Yes, as I said, technically. But you know exactly what is meant by "made up names" so why are you being arsey?

CheckpointCharlie2 · 01/12/2017 16:01

I know a Ronnie and a Reggie!

WhooooAmI24601 · 01/12/2017 16:01

I know a bloke named Kray, because his Dad was a huge fan of the original Kray Twins.

People do odd things sometimes.

Renniehorta · 01/12/2017 16:02

When my son was born in 1987 I met a mum with twin girls called Kylie and Charlene. Fads come and go, but the children are lumbered for life.

FV45 · 01/12/2017 16:05

I know of a Holly and Jessica. Not twins.
The mum is about 10 years younger than me so would have been pretty young when the Soham murders happened so while she may have heard the names, maybe didn't make the link.

I'm sure most people wouldn't actually, it just struck me. We live pretty close.

SirGawain · 01/12/2017 16:06

It is an odd choice. I've often wondered how many German boys have been namrd Adolf since 1945.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 01/12/2017 16:08

But you know exactly what is meant by "made up names" so why are you being arsey?

I really don’t know what you mean, because as I said, all names are made up. Which names do you mean?

prismWitch · 01/12/2017 16:08

I must admit I watched the movie but didn't remember name of twins. Could it be that some of the parents do not associate it with Krays, but just remember them as being a cute pair of names for twins?

Also, I can imagine that somebody chose the name for kid, because they heard it somewhere and liked the combination. Just could not remember where... (Eva Brown for the win).

My baby has a very standard name, but both me and my FH loved it. Fair play I didn't cross check it for any murderess before naming her Grin

tinysparklyshoes · 01/12/2017 16:10

I really don’t know what you mean, because as I said, all names are made up. Which names do you mean?

Ah come on, you're being ridiculous. You seriously can't see the difference between a name that has been a name for a thousand years, lets say Catherine for example, and one you made up for your kid last week, like MaKaybreelynleigh?

I refuse to believe you're that daft.

MrLovebucket · 01/12/2017 16:12

It's a bit odd to want that association and I can't say I like the names either.

Still, better than calling them Pinky and Perky I suppose.

HildaZelda · 01/12/2017 16:19

Good God, what's next? Fred & Rose perhaps?
