To report this to the Police?

I was out driving earlier and was driving down a busy road, stop start traffic. A cyclist was between me and the car in front.

As traffic started to clear the cyclist moved along the inside of the car in front and held on the car's wing mirror. We were going about 15/20miles an hour when the car in front slammed on their brakes and the cyclist wobbled and let go. I stayed back as I wasn't sure what the driver would do. The driver and cyclist shouted at each other then drove/cycled away.

I've had cyclists do this to me but I just put on my hazards and stop accelerating, not braking and they usually let go. I would never brake like that. I have a dash camera and it shows what happened and the car's registration number. Aibu to contact the police? Sending them the video?

Don't you have anything better to do?

KatieHaslam22 · 25/11/2017 16:06

Yes it was probably dangerous of the driver to break!
However, cyclist had no right to grab the car, it is not his property or public property.
Police would probably not care either tbh

RunningOutOfCharge · 25/11/2017 16:06

The cyclist was in the wrong...idiots!

cakeymccakington · 25/11/2017 16:07

Report what exactly??

crazycatgal · 25/11/2017 16:08

Why do you think the cyclist had any right to grab hold of the car? I'd get pissed off if I had some idiot hanging onto my car.

Sparklesocks · 25/11/2017 16:08

I’m not really sure if a crime has been committed, also do you have the number plate/bike description anyway?

Nikephorus · 25/11/2017 16:08

Like they're going to care. The cyclist shouldn't have grabbed the car in the first place - for all the driver knew he was going to break the mirror off.

formerbabe · 25/11/2017 16:09

Do you lead a very uneventful life op? Most people would have forgotten this ten seconds after it had happened.

Sparklesocks · 25/11/2017 16:09

Sorry I missed that part about your dash cam. But yes I’m not sure what you’d be reporting tbh

DressedCrab · 25/11/2017 16:11

The cyclist was the idiot so unless you can identify him I wouldn't bother.

Floralnomad · 25/11/2017 16:13

Who are you planning on reporting ?

Tinselistacky · 25/11/2017 16:14

Report the bloody cyclist. They are a hazard imo/e.

NoqontroI · 25/11/2017 16:15

That's weird, is cyclists hanging on to the mirror a 'thing' then? I wouldn't be impressed if someone did that to my motor Hmm

formerbabe · 25/11/2017 16:17

Really? Do you honestly think the police will investigate this?! Hysterical...only on mumsnet!

Laiste · 25/11/2017 16:19

I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the highway code which advises motorists of the lawful procedure when cyclists hang on to your car in moving traffic!

What would you want the police to say to the motorist? Ooh you mustn't break and make them fall off .... let them hang on and gently come to a stop? Hmm

ivykaty44 · 25/11/2017 16:20

What the person on the push bike did was illegal

Yes you should send the video into police and report incident - it should only take a few moments and will hopefully prevent a repeat incident

ivykaty44 · 25/11/2017 16:22

You’d be reporting a traffic incident and people are often identifiable through photos- the person on the bike maybe known to police for all you know.

pisacake · 25/11/2017 16:24

sorry I don't understand. The cyclist held on to the wing mirror why? Because the driver was driving like a cunt? Or?

Imsorrynow · 25/11/2017 16:27

It’s never happened to me before and I’d be a bit put out if a cyclist grabbed hold of my mirror. Genuine question, why do they do it? Is it for a free ride? How dangerous.

DiegoMadonna · 25/11/2017 16:30

What if you put your foot down while they're holding on?

pisacake · 25/11/2017 16:30

The only time i've heard of a cyclist holding a mirror is to say 'fuck off' to a driver who has cut them up.
And it would be more of a 'smack' than holding it.

Missonihoni · 25/11/2017 16:31

If the cyclist held onto my mirror I would slam
On my breaks aswell.

Don't report as they will probably blame the driver but really it's the twatty cyclist.

ptumbi · 25/11/2017 16:36

Brakes! It's a brake! Not a break - although if a cyclist tried to hang on to my mirrors I'd break something (like his legs - by accident, ofc)

lljkk · 25/11/2017 16:36

I would phone the police (non emergency number) & ask if they are interested.

Have never seen this happen or heard of it before.

WitchesHatRim · 25/11/2017 16:40

You seem to think that the driver was wrong and not the cyclist.

The cyclist was an idiot. What they did was illegal yet you don't seem to acknowledge that.
