To report this to the Police?

I was out driving earlier and was driving down a busy road, stop start traffic. A cyclist was between me and the car in front.

As traffic started to clear the cyclist moved along the inside of the car in front and held on the car's wing mirror. We were going about 15/20miles an hour when the car in front slammed on their brakes and the cyclist wobbled and let go. I stayed back as I wasn't sure what the driver would do. The driver and cyclist shouted at each other then drove/cycled away.

I've had cyclists do this to me but I just put on my hazards and stop accelerating, not braking and they usually let go. I would never brake like that. I have a dash camera and it shows what happened and the car's registration number. Aibu to contact the police? Sending them the video?

The driver may have panicked or they may have done it deliberately through anger. You cannot prove anything. The driver could simply say they thought they saw a small animal run across the road and braked.

user1492958275 · 25/11/2017 16:50

I'd be freaked if a cyclist held onto my car at ANY speed. What a bloody idiot!

Could of been a quick reaction to break and not an intention to hurt the cyclist.

Cyclist sounds like a dick tbh, can't see why anyone would do that?

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 25/11/2017 16:52

Hun they don't even come out to visit you unless you've had over a grand stolen or need hospital treatment. What exactly are they going to do here?

Psychobabble123 · 25/11/2017 16:58

Why on earth do you think the driver has done anything wrong?! ConfusedI

Violletta · 25/11/2017 16:59

who the fuck holds on to a car while cycling - get to fuck!

Pandoraphile · 25/11/2017 17:03

Cyclist was 100% wrong! Total idiot. They're a menace on the roads imo/e

GwenStaceyRocks · 25/11/2017 17:03

It's interesting that you think hazards and slowing is more responsible because you're actually choosing to prolong the situation where a cyclist is holding on to your car. It's such an unsafe situation, I've no idea why you would want to prolong it.I think stopping is more responsible tbh.

UserX · 25/11/2017 17:03

Gosh, it’s been almost a week without an anti-cycling thread.

ButchyRestingFace · 25/11/2017 17:12

WTF??

I only have my L plates so am not fully au fait with what goes on on the road. But why the funkins would a cyclist HOLD ONTO a car mirror whilst both vehicles were in motions?

Is this the cyclist equivalent of saying "STAY, ROVER!" to the car driver? Or is he training to become a trapeze artist at his local circus?

Confused
Charolais · 25/11/2017 17:19

Like the cyclist, you need to let it go.

user1498927651 · 25/11/2017 17:21

I wouldn't report it unless the cyclist's behaviour had caused an accident. It would be difficult for the police to do anything without any details to identify the cyclist. I don't see how the car registration would help?

supersop60 · 25/11/2017 17:22

So the cyclist was getting a free ride? Do you think the driver did it to 'teach the cyclist a lesson' or panicked?

ivykaty44 · 25/11/2017 17:33

Op just post the footage for us to see this incident

Saucery · 25/11/2017 17:35

Driver could say they thought the cyclist was reaching for their door handle in slow moving traffic. They may well have thought so.
Cyclist was a dick - no way would I report this in case the driver got into trouble.

SlowlyShrinking · 25/11/2017 17:40

Is this a thing that some cyclists do then? Or just this particular one? The driver shouldn’t have slammed on their brakes, cyclists are so vulnerable and he could have easily been injured. However, the driver could have braked for another reason unrelated to what the cyclist had done (unlikely though)

ivykaty44 · 25/11/2017 17:55

Why would the driver get into trouble? From description of events the driver didn’t do anything wrong

beckythomas · 25/11/2017 17:58

When the cyclist grabbed the car what that intentional or accidental? What is that you would like to report exactly?

PidgeonSpray · 25/11/2017 18:07

Who are u going to report? The cyclist was in the wrong

rollingonariver · 25/11/2017 18:18

Tbh lots of drivers would brake when freaked out. Cyclist was in the wrong here.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 25/11/2017 18:23

Wtf? The cyclist is a total idiot! How incredibly distracting and dangerous. The driver panicked and breaked which is probably exactly how i would react. Where the hell do you live where this has happened to you a few times? And what on earth do you think the driver has done wrong here? Confused

MissDuke · 25/11/2017 18:23

All the driver did was brake - this is allowed. They did nothing wrong. Just as you shouldn't drive too close to the car in front in case it brakes - you shouldn't grab onto cars in case they brake!

Escapepeas · 25/11/2017 18:28

I don’t know why you would report this or what you think the police could or would do. Honestly, the obsession on mumsnet with reporting stuff to the police is beyond ludicrous. As if they have nothing better to do than sit around and wait for slightly offended women to complain about their neighbour being rude.

I completely agree. Mumsnet is full of busy bodies...blimey, imagine if we all reported every minor traffic infringement we saw?!

wednesdayswench · 25/11/2017 18:31

If your dashcam can identify the cyclist (who was in the wrong) then by all means report it.

Driver did nothing wrong though.
