To report this to the Police?

I was out driving earlier and was driving down a busy road, stop start traffic. A cyclist was between me and the car in front.

As traffic started to clear the cyclist moved along the inside of the car in front and held on the car's wing mirror. We were going about 15/20miles an hour when the car in front slammed on their brakes and the cyclist wobbled and let go. I stayed back as I wasn't sure what the driver would do. The driver and cyclist shouted at each other then drove/cycled away.

I've had cyclists do this to me but I just put on my hazards and stop accelerating, not braking and they usually let go. I would never brake like that. I have a dash camera and it shows what happened and the car's registration number. Aibu to contact the police? Sending them the video?

Don't you have anything better to do?

I agree with babe This exactly. You’re being ridiculous. Move on and do something useful with your time.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 25/11/2017 18:34

You don’t know that the driver didn’t see a child run out into the road, or some other hazard.

steff13 · 25/11/2017 18:39

I've been driving for a long time, and I'm a pretty competent driver, but if someone grabbed my side mirror I'd probably brake just out of shock. The cyclist was exceedingly foolish.

annaharvey · 25/11/2017 18:52

I think its a bad idea to report as it would only create more stir. Both the cyclist and the person in car would have forgotten it. Why to remind them?

HarveySherlock · 25/11/2017 21:40

DH who saw the video thinks I should report the driver. I don't. I think the cyclist was at fault. He doesn't.

I have a dash camera as there have been a number of smash for cash in our area.

Why not just email the video to your police and let them decided? You don’t even need to talk to them as you can email dash cam footage on their webpages

LouiseH2017 · 26/11/2017 01:19

Why does your DH think the driver wasn’t at fault?

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2017 01:25

LouiseH what HC rule would the driver have broken?

LouiseH2017 · 26/11/2017 01:42

@ivykaty44 that’s what I’m trying to find out. However I’ve always found that I get a better (non-dismissive, non-defensive) response if the question is asked in a positive (why DOES one think that) rather than a negative (why DOESN’T one think that) way, and if I have miss understood then I may learn something in the process.

GetOutOfMYGarden · 26/11/2017 01:50

The cyclist is a twat, why the fuck is he grabbing the mirror? I'd hear the bang of them grabbing it at speed, assume I'd hit them and stop!

liminality · 26/11/2017 02:46

You guys would seriously slam on your brakes and KILL a cyclist for holding onto your mirror?
I get that it's annoying and dangerous on his part - but you people are cunts if you would endanger someones life for this, I hope none of your children ever ride bikes.

liminality · 26/11/2017 02:47

The driver ABSOLUTELY was in the wrong if they practiced a maneuver designed to injure or kill someone.

Even if the cyclist was also in the wrong.

liminality · 26/11/2017 02:52

Also, definitely report to the police - a non-urgent report - even if they do not do anything in this particular case, this kind of information adds to their overall picture of how people use the roads, and may help them to develop guidelines, legislation, public awareness campaigns or better cycling infrastructure.
Just as reporting minor sexual assaults might not lead to conviction, it helps police to have a better understanding of what is happening in our communities.

No chance sorry but the idiot cyclists had no right to grab onto the car yes the driver of the car shouldn't have slammed brakes on but the cyclist put themselves in that danger/situation there is no need to report to the police bit of luck cyclist learnt lesson

Fitzsimmons · 26/11/2017 07:35

How can your DH be certain the driver wasn't responding to something else on the road in front of him, for example, a cat running out in front of him. The cyclist was being stupid and dangerous, completely their own fault if they got hurt.

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2017 07:37

What amazes me is that the Highway Code rules are what the driver followed yet people state he is wrong to follow those rules - would be interested to no why the driver was wrong in following the rules?

Crumbs1 · 26/11/2017 07:43

What’s it got to,do with you?

Olicity17 · 26/11/2017 07:46

So now its your dh that says you should report the driver?

Some of the responses are from people saying they think they might slam on the breaks in a blind panic, not a controlled attempt to end the cyclist’s life.

As for who have children - just teach them not to grab the wing mirror of a moving vehicle. Simples. It shouldn’t be too difficult to refrain from such suicidal behaviour.

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2017 08:25

If you’re riding a bike on the highway you should read and follow the rules laid out for you

And holding onto a moving vehicle is a must not in the HC

lljkk · 26/11/2017 10:03

People who have seen the video (which probably shouldn't be shared here) have significant concerns that the driver maybe was deliberately trying to hurt the cyclist. I'd take it to police & let them decide if case to answer.

formerbabe · 26/11/2017 10:07

Yes, let's all report every minor infringement of the highway code we ever witness. Brilliant idea. I'm sure the police have nothing better to do.

Sounds a little optimistic Grin

Have you seen the video?

I thought it was only the OP and her husband who had seen it? And hubby was the one “driving” the reporting? (I’ve maybe missed a post).
