Unless is a dire emergency why doesn't she phone back when it's ended? Of course she doesn't want to miss the end

Def NU to say "I can't talk at the moment, can I ring you back?" Usually best not to give a specific reason - people either get offended, or they try to argue with you and explain to you how it would be very easy for you to do what they want.

But why can't your friend wait three minutes? Is it an urgent call or just a chat?

Obviously if it's "mum I'm in labour" then yanbu but if it's more like "what are you doing this week" then yabu

I wouldn't answer phone if it rung during a favourite programme either. If OP's friend knows her Mum watches certain soaps regularly as many of us do lol then hold off phoning until later?

Would it be ok to wait if the mum was eating, in the toilet, answering the door, if yes then why can't it wait until her prog is finished.

My mum doesn't talk on the phone during The Archers. It's 15 minutes, I think we can allow her that time every day and just call back later

Mind you, I also don’t see why your friend needed you to post it on a message board for her. Joining MN takes about 30 seconds if she really needed to discuss it that badly!

I have done the opposite, knowing my father tends to run on a bit I have rung him 20 minutes before Emmerdale knowing he will cut the conversation so he doesn't miss it!

My mum is always complaining that her sister without fail phones for a chat 5 mins before the end of her favourite programme.

Of course she shouldn't come to the phone if she doesn't want to unless it's an emergency.
