How would you pronounce this name?

We have just had our new DD. We have called her Mila (to rhyme with smiler). There has been alot of confusion with family and friends on how to pronounce it. Some have been saying it with an 'i' sound as we intended. Others say it with an 'ee' sound (like Meela). Should we change the spelling to Myla instead before we register the birth so there is less confusion? Or AIBU to keep the spelling Mila and she has to keep telling people how to say her name all her life. Do you have a name that other people keep mispronouncing and does it do your head in or do you like having a more unusual name?

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 12/11/2017 22:39

It’s Meela, sorry. Jovovich, Kunis.

Myla, definitely.

peachgreen · 12/11/2017 22:39

Meela, as in Kunis. Never heard of it as Milah, sorry.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 12/11/2017 22:39

Definitely Mee-la

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 12/11/2017 22:40

Sorry again Jovovich is Milla not Mila.

Xeneth88 · 12/11/2017 22:40

Mila is pronounced Meela

Caulk · 12/11/2017 22:40

Meela. Like the famous ones lifted above.

Myla is what you want.

twinkledag · 12/11/2017 22:40

I like the name! Would’ve pronounced it Miller.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 12/11/2017 22:40

And yes register her as Myla. Otherwise she’ll spend her life having to correct people

mum11970 · 12/11/2017 22:40

Mee-la, the same as the sports brand Fila.

Giraffey1 · 12/11/2017 22:41

Meela. I would change the spelling to a y so you can avoid any doubt in the future.

trojanpony · 12/11/2017 22:41

Agree with the others

Tiredtomybones · 12/11/2017 22:41

Katedotness1963 · 12/11/2017 22:42

Me-la

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 12/11/2017 22:42

Should we change the spelling to Myla instead before we register the birth so there is less confusion?

Definitely!

Mila Kunis is to famous for people to not have heard the name pronounced as she does.

BakedBeans47 · 12/11/2017 22:42

I know of a little Mila and it’s pronounced Meela

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 12/11/2017 22:43

Would’ve pronounced it Miller.

Confused there is no r in it!

dancinfeet · 12/11/2017 22:45

I would change it to Myla or Milah if you want that pronunciation

Yika · 12/11/2017 22:45

All the Milas I know are Meela and that's how I'd read it anyway. So yes I would spell it Myla.

FlashTheSloth · 12/11/2017 22:46

You are pronouncing it wrong and your DD will have a lifetime of this. Change the spelling now.

Our sirname gets mispronounced a lot, which is stupid really because if you followed phonics, it's obvious how it should be pronounced. I suggested to DH we add a letter to the name when we registered DC1 to prevent this and he wouldn't have it. I wish I'd pushed it tbh as it really pisses me off. Makes it sound like a not overly nice word. Think Craper as opposed to Crapper.

Ttbb · 12/11/2017 22:47

Meela

Ttbb · 12/11/2017 22:47

As in Mila Kunis
