How would you pronounce this name?

We have just had our new DD. We have called her Mila (to rhyme with smiler). There has been alot of confusion with family and friends on how to pronounce it. Some have been saying it with an 'i' sound as we intended. Others say it with an 'ee' sound (like Meela). Should we change the spelling to Myla instead before we register the birth so there is less confusion? Or AIBU to keep the spelling Mila and she has to keep telling people how to say her name all her life. Do you have a name that other people keep mispronouncing and does it do your head in or do you like having a more unusual name?

Yes I'd change the spelling to Myla, as there'll be no confusion, then.
Otherwise she'll go through life saying. Its Myla not Meela, which will start to grate on you and more so her

CongratulationsFlowers

greeeen · 12/11/2017 22:48

Mila is pronounced mee-la. Like mila kunis.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 12/11/2017 22:49

I've only ever heard Mila pronounced as mee-la.
I would spell it myla if it's to be pronounced like smiler

"All the Milas I know are Meela"

How many do you know? Only about 1000 of the 30,000,000 babies born in the last 10 years are called Mila.....

inkandstone · 12/11/2017 22:55

Meela

theymademejoin · 12/11/2017 22:55

If you want it to rhyme with smiler then I'd spell it myler.

Mila, I would pronounce as mile-ah. There is no r at the end so an a sound like in apple.

GreenPetal94 · 12/11/2017 22:55

It is best to always spell the name in the way that will lead to the pronunciation you want. Otherwise it will be hard for her in school and the future. So if you want My-la I'd change the spelling.

DullAndOld · 12/11/2017 22:55

Meela

pickleface · 12/11/2017 22:56

Meela

WaitrosePigeon · 12/11/2017 22:56

Meela

KurriKurri · 12/11/2017 22:58

I've only ever heard it pronounced Meela (but I only know of one- Kunis)

Odd though isn't it - no one ever tries to prounounce Milo as Meelo.

I'd probably change it to Myla to save her having to correct. Pretty name though - and congrats Smile

Fruitcocktail6 · 12/11/2017 22:58

there is no r in it!

And no double L.

I would pronounce it Meela.

Ojoj1974 · 12/11/2017 22:59

Miller
I have a friend with a daughter called Mila and its pronounced Miller

fartyghost · 12/11/2017 23:00

Mila is Meela
Myla is too close to Myra though.

lotsoflittlemys · 12/11/2017 23:00

You're pronouncing it wrong OP, spell it Myla. Or your dd will be like a girl I went to school with called Xavier. Pronounced eggs-saviour.

MrsOverTheRoad · 12/11/2017 23:02

I live in Oz and know a Mila...everyone here says "Miller" which irritates me as it's Meela.

OP..change the spelling to Myla.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/11/2017 23:02

Mila,I’d pronounce Meela.as would majority
Myla I’d pronounce MyLah

You said Mila (to rhyme with smiler). Smiler ends in r are you saying mila as myler? Or when you say smiler do you drop the r and say smilah

lotsoflittlemys · 12/11/2017 23:03

Ojoj it's not though, that's wrong too!

ZoeWashburne · 12/11/2017 23:03
