How would you pronounce this name?

We have just had our new DD. We have called her Mila (to rhyme with smiler). There has been alot of confusion with family and friends on how to pronounce it. Some have been saying it with an 'i' sound as we intended. Others say it with an 'ee' sound (like Meela). Should we change the spelling to Myla instead before we register the birth so there is less confusion? Or AIBU to keep the spelling Mila and she has to keep telling people how to say her name all her life. Do you have a name that other people keep mispronouncing and does it do your head in or do you like having a more unusual name?

BatteredBread Why would the lack of r mean it wouldn't be Miller? Not everyone pronounces an r at the end of a word.

Then they aren’t saying the word “miller” They’re saying milla or milleh.

Saying it didn't have a double L would make more sense.

No it makes the same amount of sense.

MagicTapeDispenser · 13/11/2017 12:39

I immediately thought ‘Meela’.

So, for the sake of avoiding future grief from your daughter when nobody pronounces her name correctly, I’d change it to ‘Myla’....

Or ‘Miley’ after the Hannah Montana star!

Michael Portillo's middle name is Xavier (pronounced egg-saviour) I think you need to make some pretty bold background assumptions about the man in front of you before you plump for a pronunciation on that one Grin

LAlady · 13/11/2017 12:42

I know a girl called Mila. Definitely pronounced Meela

BartholinsSister · 13/11/2017 12:43

There was a Milo in the Tweenies.
How is that pronounced?

MaggieFS · 13/11/2017 12:46

Yes! I have one of those names, and not even because my parents chose a quirky pronunciation, it has two versions and mine is the less common. It’s a complete pain in the bum. From school to adulthood, I hate being the awkward one that always has to say ‘er, actually it’s...’ It’s so embarrassing.

Go with Myla, it’s lovely

loveka · 13/11/2017 12:47

I would say it Mee-la.

So definately change the spelling.

I have a constantly mis pronounced and spelled surname, where people add an extra letter for some reason and it really has been a pain all my life!

KurriKurri · 13/11/2017 14:23

Milo is usually pronounce to rhyme with Silo

PidgeonSpray · 13/11/2017 23:38

Mila = meela

How about Misla? Most kids are called Isla these days so people should get it correct if you just add an M to the start lol

SomethingNewToday · 13/11/2017 23:42

I would pronounce Mila as 'Mee-la' and Myla as 'My-la'. Tbh I would stick with the spelling and call her 'Mee-la', it's a lovely name.

ChameNangerRanger · 14/11/2017 00:14

Meela. sorry.

Greyhorses · 14/11/2017 06:29

I know two Milas who are pronounced
Mee-la. I think you need to chance the spelling.

InspMorse · 14/11/2017 06:35

Mila = Me-la

Myla is said the same way as Myra.

Yes it is odd isn't it, I've never heard Milo pronounced as Meelo either. I've also never heard the girl's name Lila pronounced Leelo.

I have a Lila (pronounced Lie-la). It never occurred to me anyone would think it was pronounced differently to this, but one or two people have called her "Lee-la".

She's only 11 months so isn't bothered but I feel bad she may have to correct people as she's gets older, though I'm sure she'll not be bothered too much.

I chose that name years and years ago from a book series I used to read as a kid that was then turned into a tv programme, where the characters name was pronounced how I had been reading it which was Lie-la.

It's the only time I'd heard the name so never particularly thought it would be pronounced any different.

isthismummy · 14/11/2017 07:24

Myla is the name of a posh lingerie brand op.

It's a pretty name, but immediately think off fancy knickers when I hear itGrin

HouseworkIsASin10 · 14/11/2017 11:08

I thought Mila was pronounced 'Mee-ya' with a silent L.

I'm sure I've heard Mila Kunis being called 'Mee-ya' in interviews.

VileyRose · 14/11/2017 11:52

mee-la

bevelino · 14/11/2017 20:27
