Love the new ad! Wondering if I should I buy my 18m DS the soft toy and book related to the advert as a xmas present? Total £29 - is that a bit expensive? I bought him buster the dog last year but i'm sure it wasn't that expensive. My DH is much more 'careful' with money, so will raise eyebrows at the price - AIBU to buy it anyway knowing its overpriced and we are trying to minimise the cost of Christmas?

Depends. Will you buy it making it part/all of his main present? In which case YANBU if you stick to budget.

yes what Anti said - I thought it was just a cynical attempt to make you buy stuff (which is what advertising is) but not even very well disguised.

I don't even get it - monster scares child, monster and child become mates causing child to suffer - monster buggers off unannounced leaving child with a night light to make up for it

Have you seen the cuddly toy? It looks kind of creepy and not like the monster in the ad at all.

I usually get the cuddly toys they flog with the advert every year for my little brother but I don't think I'll bother this year!

My understanding of it is that the monster realised he was keeping his friend awake all night playing so bought him a night light which in turn kept the monster away. Ergo he sacrificed himself for his friend.

So, did the book and the toy come first or the ad?

I mean is this an ad based on an existing toy or are they selling a book and toy about their own tv ad?

The ad is clearly designed to enable merchandising from it. Yes that's the point of advertising but I'm surprised people fall for it!!

It's ok. But if it weren't for they hype around JL xmas ads and this thread i wouldn't have thought twice about it.

I see it as a night time imaginary friend becoming a bit of a PITA disturbing a kids sleep pattern so at xmas the mum buys a night light to get rid of it sort it out.

it will be in addition to other presents, and not his main present. We are getting him a mini trampoline, toddler train set, and a farm set, but i'm not getting many stocking fillers as i don't want to add to the mountain of crap large amount of inexpensive toys he already has. the £29 would be in place of stocking fillers. I have to admit I do often get sucked in to all this commercial 'shite'. DS does love the advert (but he loves anything shown on a TV/mobile screen).

I'm not rushing out to buy the toy, but it's a lovely story in an ad, the kid is cute, it's well put together. It's bitter sweet at the end.

IKEA have new monster toys 100% of the money is going to save the children in the UK and John Lewis will give just 10% to Barnardo's! That's a shitty percentage if you can work out how much the toy will have cost to produce in bulk.

He's 18m. Give him monster made out of a sock and he won't know the difference.
