John Lewis Ad

Love the new ad! Wondering if I should I buy my 18m DS the soft toy and book related to the advert as a xmas present? Total £29 - is that a bit expensive? I bought him buster the dog last year but i'm sure it wasn't that expensive. My DH is much more 'careful' with money, so will raise eyebrows at the price - AIBU to buy it anyway knowing its overpriced and we are trying to minimise the cost of Christmas?

OP posts:

Well I’m just annoyed that the night light has sold out so quickly Hmm

VladmirsPoutine · 10/11/2017 12:08

OP. You post just screams 'I work for the marketing agency pushing this tat' all over it.

Seconded. Is this what the industry calls 'organic' marketing or some such? Grin

WitchesHatRim · 10/11/2017 12:10

OP. You post just screams 'I work for the marketing agency pushing this tat' all over it.

My thought too.

Ad isn't that wonderful and there are better ones out there this year.

Tobebythesea · 10/11/2017 12:16

I hate the ad. What has it got to do with Christmas?

KeyboardCat · 10/11/2017 12:33

Monster? Isn't it the one with the fox and the mouse (who is a total knob by the way)?

HaHaHmm · 10/11/2017 12:36

It will all be heavily reduced on 27 December. They were still trying to get rid of the woodland toys in February at our nearest JL. Buy them then. He is 18 months; he won't know the difference.

Kraggle · 10/11/2017 12:39

I hated the ad and didn't really get it, plus the toy is horrible and doesn't even look like the monster from the ad!

ShotsFired · 10/11/2017 12:47

I thought it was pretty shit compared to the ones they started this whole 'big' Christmas Advert thing with a few years ago.

The ones that are most memorable are the ones you can watch again and again and not be bored by. This one, I've seen it once and I know the big ending so it'll just get fast-forwarded every time now.

Also the previous ones seem (based on just my memory) to appeal to more people than just parents of small children. JL seem to be putting themselves into quite a specific category with this.

WitchesHatRim · 10/11/2017 12:50

@KeyboardCat no that was fake.

MotherofKitties · 10/11/2017 12:52

It wasn’t chri

MotherofKitties · 10/11/2017 12:53

Whoops posted too soon!

It wasn’t Christmassy at all; I loved the year where they had the snowman buying the scarf and hat for his snow-wife, but this years is just awful!

WhooooAmI24601 · 10/11/2017 12:53

I cried with utter joy at Buster the Boxer last year, just watched this year's and I'm unmoved, entirely unmoved by it.

It's such a shame because when John Lewis get it right, they get it so, so right.

Sidge · 10/11/2017 12:56

I think the ad is dull, confusing and not remotely Christmassy.

Clandestino · 10/11/2017 12:57

The only thing I liked from the ad was the lamp with the stars or whatever it was supposed to be.
The rest of the ad was meh, which was hugely disappointing as I have always loved John Lewis's Christmas ad.
And I agree that the OP's post sounds like a marketing pitch. Trying too hard though.

Elendon · 10/11/2017 13:02

I don't like the Beatles and while I love the beginning of this song, I just get the refrain

Boy, you're going to carry that weight, carry that weight a long time.

I think it's an advert for grandparents.

FeistyColl · 10/11/2017 13:05

Total let down. Agree with pps - nothing remotely Christmassy about it. It didn't even make sense - the boy stopped being afraid of the monster and stayed awake having fun. The lovely starry light projector won't replace a fun friend at night .... And if you buy the toy, your DC will run around the room at night giving it piggy backs!

Dustysparrow · 10/11/2017 13:07

I get that the monster is supposed to look appealing .... but it doesn't.... just weird.

VladmirsPoutine · 10/11/2017 13:08

The monster appears to have a purple-ish bollock for a nose.

gentlydoesit89 · 10/11/2017 13:13

I miss Monty the penguin

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 10/11/2017 13:57

At his age I would honestly wait for the sale. I bought the dog and book on Xmas eve last year and it was on sale then.

funnyfoursome · 10/11/2017 14:04

It didn't do it for me this year. Nothing can beat the bear one. An animal is so much more engaging than an ugly monster. No way am I showing it to my kids on youtube like last year either - will give them nightmares!!!

sundayfeeling · 10/11/2017 14:08

I don't like it at all and I don't think I get either.
I've seen comments saying it tells a lovely story. What is the story? Because all I get is a little boy afraid of a monster and then he's not Confused

sundayfeeling · 10/11/2017 14:08

*I get it either.

TheAntiBoop · 10/11/2017 14:15

Is he called moz as some sort of tribute to Maurice Sendak? Because the monster looks a lot like his or am I the only one who thinks so!!

I didn't even notice the song when I first watched it - just all so bland

gillybeanz · 10/11/2017 14:22

I love the add and although no little monsters to buy the toy for, I wouldn't spend money on an advert, sorry.
